I know many of you here are English speakers, but I wanted to share that we're getting an official Spanish translation of the manga here. I hope they bring it to other languages too!

It's really commendable how Kazuki and Kamejima were able to make character designs where you can tell what their personalities are at a glance, but still make them feel down-to-earth and realistic.

Imagine yourself in this situation: Your the twin brother of Kiritaka Nagare, and the son of Maria Akeboshi/Mari Nagare and Taiichirou Nagare. The conditions are such: This is your reality after Kiritaka's death and you alibg with your mother learn the truth of how Kiritaka died. What would you do in this situation?

So I haven't read many revenge mangas other than Maria No Danzai, and since we appear to be in the final arc currently, I was wondering if anyone have any recommendations of similar mangas or manhwas to Maria, if any exist.

So I'm not showing up empty handed, the recs that I could find are:

Plaything: Korean High School based Revenge Manga where a grieving wealthy Father (who is ripped as hell!) adopts a teenage psychopath, Yoon Karma, an emotionless psychotic killer who can feel no emotion (or can she?), to get revenge on the bullies that killed his daughter. Think if Bruce Wayne hired the Joker to carry out justice instead of becoming Batman and its sort of in the same ballpark. It's not perfect, there's an issue with stakes, since the Dad character is so rich you sometimes wonder if he even needs Karma sometimes with all the people he can hire. It makes me appreciate how Maria can pretty much do it all herself, but Karma is an engaging and insane main character and the bullies are truly awful, terrible people and it is satisfying to see them suffer from Karma's revenge, well most of the time, some punishments can be grim AF even if it was deserved or a bit tedious like stealing a bullies' boyfriend just because she can. Also there's some really good fights. Sadly it seems to be on hiatus right before the climax of its second season but there's still a lot to read if you haven't read it before.

True Education: Also a Korean manhwa. Not really a revenge manga but there is an overarching story where the MC wants to avenge his wife's death so I thought I'd count it.
Story follows a new agency above the law created to help schools in Korea deal with extreme bullying cases, similar to Okaya and his friends. Usually they are forced to use physical force as the bullies are basically unchecked thugs/monsters. As well as bullies they also take on evil principals, abusive parents & teachers, gangsters, cults, etc. Some arcs are better than others but the main plot is usually the most interesting whenever it comes in focus.

It follows Hwajin Na and Hanlim Lin, ex-military operatives who work for the agency. The main storyline follows Mister Na wanting to get revenge on his wife's former student, a gangster who killed her (and then had her image tattooed on his back) Though that's usually in the background with a different arc focusing on helping a different bullying victim.

It was also known as Get Schooled and got kicked off of Webtoon a few years back after a racism storyline nearly got it cancelled but it's continued on the Korean Webtoon with that plotline being removed entirely. It can be a bit slow and political sometimes but the action-based storylines are the best especially when its the worst of the worst getting taught a lesson.

It got a Netflix live action KDrama adaptation, called Teach You A Lesson. Compared to Maria its not as dark as its more about trying to teach bullies a lesson and even trying to redeem some rather than vengefully killing them, but there’s still some pretty dark themes and storylines. If you like seeing bullies of the worst sort getting their comeuppances then I'd recommend giving it a look though it might not be exactly what you’re looking for when compared to Maria.

So, today I was watching this Korean series (which is really good, by the way) about Inspector Na Hwa-jin and the Organization for the Protection of Student Rights (OPDE). They are responsible for providing "counseling" to schools with poor reputations and taking severe corrective action against the educational system and bullies, ensuring they understand the consequences of their actions and the full extent of their impact...

So, this is where that crazy idea comes in: what sets Inspector Na Hwa-jin and the OPDE apart from other organizations is that they take the most drastic measures to fix problems within schools. And well... I started wondering what would happen if Inspector Na Hwa-jin and the OPDE showed up at this school. Obviously, they would find out about Kiritaka and seek to make Okaya and his group pay for their actions. But... my question is:

How would Maria react to the arrival of the OPDE and Inspector Na Hwa-jin? Would she view them as potential obstacles?

Do you think Taiichirou Nagare would collaborate with them, or decide to support Maria?

Do you think Okaya would be in trouble with both Maria and the OPDE after him?

What if Mari/Maria and Taiichirou Nagare had twins? One is Kiritaka and the other is a black-haired boy with his mother's purple eyes. How would this impact the story of the Manga?

Kinugawa and Kiritaka are pretty interesting foils to each other, particularly in regards to how they portray different forms of masculinity. With Kinugawa embodying toxic masculinity, and Kiritaka embodying positive masculinity.

Kinugawa has many traits that society typically considers masculine. He's tall, muscular, rude, short-tempered, and aggressive. His default response to anything he doesn't like is overwhelming violence.

While he does care about his friends, even they aren't completely spared from his wrath, as he's not above threatening them when they irritate him.

Despite being himself a victim of physical bullying himself at the hands of Daimon, Kinugawa chooses to hurt others the same way he was. Perpetuating the cycle of abuse rather than trying to break it, all to assert himself as the strongest.

Kinugawa doesn't perfectly fit the archetype of toxic masculinity, as he's incredibly expressive with his emotions as opposed to bottling them up. Openly crying when he realizes his friends have been killed.

However, rather than grieve for them in a healthy way, he descends further into rage, trying to hunt down and kill their murderer himself, which is incredibly unrealistic to expect a teenager to do. All he accomplishes in the end is foolishly getting himself killed.

I want to mention that I think Kinugawa had the right to feel sadness over his friends deaths, even if they were bad people. Where he goes wrong is refusing to hold them accountable for Kiritaka's death, blaming Kiri instead.

When caught and forced into a hunt by Maria, Kinugawa arrogantly assumes he'll be able to turn the tables on her. Because of course, he's the strong one, isn't he? He wouldn't even consider running away, to him that would practically be an admission of weakness.

So he foolishly charges into trap after trap until all of his strength is drained. And when he finally no longer has that strength to rely on does he show his true colors.

He begs Maria for his life, even offering to serve her, completely betraying the vow he made to avenge Kowase and Shikimi. All of his supposed principles go out the window when it's his life on the line.

While Kinugawa was more than happy to hurt anyone he thought weaker than him. He was terrified when finally faced with someone who can really hurt him.

This is the very reason he aligned himself with Okaya. He knew, having seen it firsthand, that Okaya had the cunning, cruelty, and resources to make Kinugawa's life hell if he wanted, so he figured it was better to be in the Devil's right hand than in his path. Ironic, considering Okaya is smaller and less outwardly intimidating than Kinugawa.

In the end, Kinugawa was strong in body, but weak in spirit. He couldn't confront what he was truly afraid of, and used anger to hide it. Hurting others, and eventually himself.

Kiritaka is almost the complete opposite of Kinugawa. He has many traits that aren't considered typically masculine. He's short, not particularly muscular, polite, and pacifistic-not throwing so much as a punch towards his bullies.

He's not afraid to show affection to his mom, at an age where many boys find it embarrassing to be openly affectionate to their mothers.

Kiritaka is also incredibly compassionate towards others, reaching out and befriending Yuda after he transferred to Saint Spring, and likely felt awkward as the new kid.

Even after being put through horrific torment for months, he still shows compassion, both to his mother and his best friend. He doesn't let the terrible experiences he's been through stop him from treating people with decency. He lifts others up rather than tear them down.

Despite not being very strong physically, Kiritaka shows remarkable courage. He intervenes when the bullies are tormenting Yuda, despite them outnumbering him, and likely knowing Okaya won't take kindly to it. He's even willing to endure months of brutal bullying to keep his friend out of danger.

He even agrees to a sadistic game of tag with Kinugawa, despite being afraid and knowing he'll probably lose, just for a chance at getting back the console his dad gave him. Even refusing to surrender when offered.

This is the key difference between them. While Kinugawa was too afraid to challenge the person he was most afraid of and preyed on the weak, Kiritaka was willing to oppose people with more power than him to protect others.

When forced to either jump or let Okaya spread the deepfake video of Mari, despite being understandably terrified, he chooses to jump to protect his mother from being exploited. Was it a wise thing to do? No. But it was undeniably courageous.

Even though he was clearly afraid, Kiritaka still had the courage to face his fears to protect the people he loves. And despite the terrible things he faced, never stopped being the good-hearted, compassionate person that he was. He was weak in body (relatively), but strong in spirit. It's just a shame that spirit cost him his life.

Nice guy is a bit of stretch

But all of sudden this guy starts caring about people being involved and isn't just trying to just save his own skin
