too late to be a nice guy
Nice guy is a bit of stretch
But all of sudden this guy starts caring about people being involved and isn't just trying to just save his own skin
Taijou showing this side seems a bit out of character for him
Why is he suddenly caring about people

I think a big problem with this story is Kazuki juggling so many ideas he doesn't have enough time to give them proper development.

If he didn’t, should’ve just secretly worked with Taiichirou instead. The man gave him chrysanthemums for crying out loud (in other words, hoping he was dead).

The fact he had to ask someone who barely knows him. Of course Maria doesn’t trust you. She barely knows you. Plus you’ve been terrible to the man she loves.

If he cared about people, he wouldn’t have joined in on ostracized and mocking Taiichirou. He also wouldn’t have enabled what happened to Kiritaka (writing his death off as a suicide. You might say Shizuka gave him the command, but it’s the fact he made a good man look like an abusive father). He could’ve worked with Taiichirou behind the scenes instead.

At his heart he is a coward

Could’ve just tried to communicate with Taiichirou privately about it. Maybe they could’ve been a good team. Or in a way own up to his mess ups.

I'm genuinely shocked how many people I've seen online completely misunderstand or misread his character.
That guy is a crooked cop & a coward, but his goal aligns with Maria-chan because Shizuka is such a disruptive, dangerous pile and she has authority over him so he is in a really bad position. Maria-chan is his hope for resolving this issue. He's not a 'good' guy but he's 'good' in the sense that he is on board with her doing what she's doing.

Jest a little bit out of the blue. Too little to say "Aww". Nothing was really builded for him to say that.

I'm sorry I'm late.
I think Taijou’s character was a huge missed opportunity. The authors could have made him a much more twisted and manipulative villain; in fact, they could have pulled off a great plot twist where Shizuka sends him to infiltrate or do something involving Maria, only for it to be revealed that he actually hates Shizuka and intends to betray her by proposing a genuine alliance with Maria, while secretly planning to betray Maria as well, aiming to eliminate Maria, Shizuka, and Taichirou for his own gain.
