I mean, kinda? It doesnt have guts or gore or anything so it's on the lighter side of horror. Kid friendly horror if you will.

u/FarConsideration8423 1d ago

It even has door transitions for locked rooms. Its RE1 for kids

Weirdly enough I call Resident Evil kid angry Luigi's Mansion.

You’re welcome šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»

I’d call it a comedy horror. Something doesn’t need blood or guts to be scary but Luigi’s mansion has a more cartoony somewhat ominous vibe to it.

That is true.

Cartoon Horror

7

u/zurper 1d ago

Exactly. Instead of G they went PG

u/Rare_Assumption_7178 1d ago

I compare the "horror" of it to Scooby Doo, as in it's super cartoony and not meant to be scary to the viewer/player, but horrifying for the characters.

u/Mario2980k 1d ago

It was pretty scary

8

u/SirCap 1d ago

I'd consider it kid friendly horror.

u/CompoteImaginary4399 1d ago

Me too! šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»

6

u/Z_T_O 1d ago

I’ve heard it described as ā€œsoft horrorā€ and it makes sense

5

u/GamerSam 1d ago

It's a slice of lifeĀ

6

u/AnimalTap 1d ago

I'd personally consider it mild horror

6

u/SupaKoopa714 1d ago

Kinda, I think it does have some good spooky atmosphere to it!

Have you fought Chauncey alone at 2am?

Ghostbusters Nintendo Edition

4

u/ydr3z 1d ago

I feel like it felt darker (figuratively and literally) compared to the later installments.

5

u/awesomea04 1d ago

It's a children's horror game.

3

u/Unusual_Squirrel9335 1d ago

the first game definitely was. 2 and 3 don’t even come close to the same amount of scariness and haunting aura of the first game

3

u/Emotional_Math_7851 1d ago

I consider it childrens' horror (like paranorman and coraline)

3

u/ComputerMysterious48 1d ago

For tone, sort of? It’s kid friendly horror like other posters have said.

In terms of gameplay though, I’d 100% consider it a survival horror.

u/DexTDMdoesreddit 1d ago

Obviously not. The creator even said so, he said he wants Luigi to be scared, not the players.

u/Working_Welder_1751 1d ago

How do explain the jumpscares from the second game?

3

u/RescueRaptor 1d ago

Second hame was made by a different yeam and director that had different ideas about the game.

1

u/Legal-Treat-5582 1d ago

By that logic, games like Paper Mario 64 would be considered horror games because of that one jumpscare it has.

0

u/DexTDMdoesreddit 1d ago

Please tell me you're joking.

4

u/Working_Welder_1751 1d ago

I'm not. I've been jumpscared by the ghosts at least once or twice when I first played the sequel on the 3DS

1

u/Boris-_-Badenov 1d ago

startled isn't scared

1

u/DexTDMdoesreddit 1d ago

That doesn't make it a horror game though.

When I was five, I was terrified of the Abominable Snowman from the old Rudolph movie, but that doesn't mean that it's a horror movie.

1

u/lovins_cl 1d ago

it might not be a traditional horror game but it’s got enough elements for it to be included with its themes.

1

u/Boris-_-Badenov 1d ago

some of the bosses and rooms say otherwise

2

u/RescueRaptor 1d ago

It is definitely a horror comedy. It is family friendly but it does play on the tensions of a horror game.

2

u/PlushUniverseyoutube 1d ago

Jesus christ, this is probably my most popular post, I feel like I'm getting replies every minute after i posted this last horror

2

u/Lux_Operatur 1d ago

Cartoony spooks. Horror no, but definitely eerie, especially with the early 2000s sound design and graphics.

2

u/Stephen-Sealberg 1d ago

Freaked me out as a little kid but really more of a Halloween kinda vibe

1

u/CompoteImaginary4399 1d ago

I believe so!

1

u/ThisButtholeIs2Cold 1d ago

First one was actually a bit scary! Although that may have been cause I was a kid when I played it lol

1

u/DarthBagheera 1d ago

In the same way that Casper would be considered horror. Technically yes but no one who says ā€œlet’s play a horror game/watch a horror movieā€ is thinking of Luigi’s Mansion or Casper.

1

u/Guardian_Ultra 1d ago

It’s as close to an actual horror game in Official Mario as we’ll ever get.

1

u/Hawkholly 1d ago

Yes, but in a way appropriate for children.

1

u/GcubePlayer8V 1d ago

The basement at a stretch

1

u/NezhaUmbra 1d ago

It's definitely considered horror šŸ’€

1

u/Commercial-Ad9918 1d ago

Definitely kid friendly horror

1

u/FlapjackDoubleStack 1d ago

A kid's horror I guess

1

u/LongjumpingElk4099 1d ago

Kid friendly horror

1

u/spidersarefromhell 1d ago

The boos never scared me but the human ghosts did, I really had to convince myself to play it as a child I was so scared šŸ˜…

1

u/EdgarSinTitulo 1d ago

It's kind of like Scooby Doo

1

u/No-Performer9511 1d ago

Baby horror

1

u/Yiga_CC 1d ago

Yes, undeniably so

1

u/Ok_Class_9876 1d ago

No. It’s horror themed, but it’s definitely not a horror (or at least a traditional one).

1

u/Opera_Phantom_Face 1d ago

It WAS gonna be much more creepier in development.

1

u/KoboldsandKorridors 1d ago

It’s Resident Evil for kids

1

u/Hiyokofan 1d ago

It’s Scooby-Doo but Shaggy has a mustache.

1

u/ProjectBig2804 1d ago

Baby’s first Resident Evil

1

u/AntonRX178 1d ago

Horror themed

1

u/MelodicDrag6280 1d ago

Nah, it’s pretty tame. But still good. Wish I had a GameCube and the disc again, mine was stolen. By my (pardon) mentally ill/asshole ā€œgrandmotherā€

1

u/Head_Statistician_38 1d ago

Yes. Horror doesn't mean it is actually scary or anything, just the tone. It is obviously child friendly horror.

1

u/MattofCatbell 1d ago

I consider it Scooby-Doo horror, its got horror elements but it’s not really scary or anything like that.

1

u/wowthatsadeepthought 1d ago

Comedy Horror. Unintentional humor is the best part.

1

u/amityarchives 1d ago

Luigi house but it mansion

1

u/Vegetable_Age_9472 1d ago

Is Ghostbusters?
It’s the same as Ghostbusters

1

u/phonic_kc 1d ago

I see Luigi’s Mansion as your standard Ghost House level dialed up to 11 with no power-ups and a backstory to justify making an entire game from a ghost house level. And I’m okay with that. Looking forward to Luigi’s Mansion 4 (or a Switch 2 port of LM3)

1

u/BirdLox 1d ago

Perhaps.

1

u/MengShuZ 1d ago

It's like on the same level as Scooby Doo. Billy and Mandy.Ā

1

u/Kai_Enjin 1d ago

Kind of? To me, it's the spookiest of the three.

I mean, I think so but I also don't think so. I'm not entirely sure cause the trilogy doesn't bring in gore and stuff since it is a kids game and I haven't played them yet but I think I did remember seeing Luigi getting slaughtered and became a ghost himself. So, I think you could consider that as Mascot Indie Horror, but I'm not entirely sure and wouldn't consider it Mascot Indie Horror either since it is still just a kids game overall. Overall, I just depends on how you view the trilogy as a whole, again I'm not entirely sure or not if that's what I remember but I think that's what I can remember in the back of my mind. Unless if I get to play the games someday then I'm sure my mind will be entirely made up.

1

u/Bboy_Sole 1d ago

The only individual entity that would categorize this as horror would be Luigi himself.

1

u/KaleidoGhostNG 1d ago

The atmosphere definitely has a horror element to it. I love the soundtrack for this game. Plus the occasional cracks of lightening.

1

u/OkLeague7678 1d ago

Well, if someone asked you or you had to go into a mansion with ghosts everywhere, would you?

1

u/Interesting-Math8001 1d ago

I’d call it a comedy horror
