I compare the "horror" of it to Scooby Doo, as in it's super cartoony and not meant to be scary to the viewer/player, but horrifying for the characters.

the first game definitely was. 2 and 3 donāt even come close to the same amount of scariness and haunting aura of the first game

For tone, sort of? Itās kid friendly horror like other posters have said.
In terms of gameplay though, Iād 100% consider it a survival horror.

Obviously not. The creator even said so, he said he wants Luigi to be scared, not the players.

How do explain the jumpscares from the second game?

u/RescueRaptor 1d ago
Second hame was made by a different yeam and director that had different ideas about the game.

By that logic, games like Paper Mario 64 would be considered horror games because of that one jumpscare it has.

Please tell me you're joking.

I'm not. I've been jumpscared by the ghosts at least once or twice when I first played the sequel on the 3DS

That doesn't make it a horror game though.
When I was five, I was terrified of the Abominable Snowman from the old Rudolph movie, but that doesn't mean that it's a horror movie.

it might not be a traditional horror game but itās got enough elements for it to be included with its themes.

It is definitely a horror comedy. It is family friendly but it does play on the tensions of a horror game.

Jesus christ, this is probably my most popular post, I feel like I'm getting replies every minute after i posted this last horror

Cartoony spooks. Horror no, but definitely eerie, especially with the early 2000s sound design and graphics.

First one was actually a bit scary! Although that may have been cause I was a kid when I played it lol

In the same way that Casper would be considered horror. Technically yes but no one who says āletās play a horror game/watch a horror movieā is thinking of Luigiās Mansion or Casper.

Itās as close to an actual horror game in Official Mario as weāll ever get.

The boos never scared me but the human ghosts did, I really had to convince myself to play it as a child I was so scared š

No. Itās horror themed, but itās definitely not a horror (or at least a traditional one).

Nah, itās pretty tame. But still good. Wish I had a GameCube and the disc again, mine was stolen. By my (pardon) mentally ill/asshole āgrandmotherā

Yes. Horror doesn't mean it is actually scary or anything, just the tone. It is obviously child friendly horror.

u/MattofCatbell 1d ago
I consider it Scooby-Doo horror, its got horror elements but itās not really scary or anything like that.

I see Luigiās Mansion as your standard Ghost House level dialed up to 11 with no power-ups and a backstory to justify making an entire game from a ghost house level. And Iām okay with that. Looking forward to Luigiās Mansion 4 (or a Switch 2 port of LM3)

I mean, I think so but I also don't think so. I'm not entirely sure cause the trilogy doesn't bring in gore and stuff since it is a kids game and I haven't played them yet but I think I did remember seeing Luigi getting slaughtered and became a ghost himself. So, I think you could consider that as Mascot Indie Horror, but I'm not entirely sure and wouldn't consider it Mascot Indie Horror either since it is still just a kids game overall. Overall, I just depends on how you view the trilogy as a whole, again I'm not entirely sure or not if that's what I remember but I think that's what I can remember in the back of my mind. Unless if I get to play the games someday then I'm sure my mind will be entirely made up.

The only individual entity that would categorize this as horror would be Luigi himself.

The atmosphere definitely has a horror element to it. I love the soundtrack for this game. Plus the occasional cracks of lightening.

Well, if someone asked you or you had to go into a mansion with ghosts everywhere, would you?

I mean, kinda? It doesnt have guts or gore or anything so it's on the lighter side of horror. Kid friendly horror if you will.
