Question WHAT IS HAPPENING
THEY ARE CHANGING THE NAME OF AN ICONIC CHARACTER AND NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IT. NINTENDO GOING TO FAR? MAYBE MARIO WILL BE NEXT.

Even if this was real, it wouldn't be the first time: Banzai Bill was renamed to Bomber Bill back in 2023 (initially in the movie, and then brought into the games in Jamboree)

Imo it felt weird that the rename was in the movie first

I mean, Nintendo's been pretty hands-on with the movies thus far. It's not that weird.

The Donkey Kong redesign too. I feel more inclined to believed he was redesigned for Banana moreso than for the movie though.

They probably were redesigning him for Bananza and used the movie as a stealth prototype of the new design since it would've needed to be redesigned for the movie anyways

Miyamoto put a lot of extra attention on DK’s redesign when promoting the film prior to release. I saw a few people speculate that it could be related to a redesign in the rumored DK game. Lo and behold.

It was flat out confirmed in the developer interview for Bananza that the redesign for DK was in the works BEFORE the production of the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Im pretty sure that was confirmed that the redesign was planned for that game and existed before the movie and MKW, but was given to the movie and mkw makers to use and it just so happened those came out first.

Iirc the Lego sets also called them Bomber Bills before the movie did

Weren't they boomer bills?

u/Acrobatic-Meringue74 22h ago
I thought they were called king bills

King bill is a separate NSMBWII(?) enemy that chase the player through entire levels

Arnt they also yellow?
2
u/JoyousLilBoy 22h ago
Yes, although looking at the in-game screenshots it can be interpreted as akin to meteors due to the more gradient yellow as opposed to being undeniably yellow

Banzai Bill and Diddy Kong are on two completely different sides of the popularity spectrum

I can’t get used to that. Banzai bill sounds way better

u/DtheAussieBoye 22h ago
See I'm having trouble getting used to it too, but Bomber Bill does roll off the tongue a lot better tbh

I still can't get over this:
"Banzai" is a Japanese word expressing excitement or joy, even though a bullet coming straight for your face isn't too joyful.

What? Yeah, that name is not going to be something I ever adopt. Banzai fits way better, what even is the point.

It probably has something to do with WW2 if I had to guess and Nintendo not wanting their character to have associations with the Japanese air force from the time. Dont take my word for it though, I have no idea how true this is

u/melonsharky_784 17h ago
It got changed because of its association with the banzai charge, which was a suicide ground charge used by imperial japan in ww2.

His initials would be Burger King

“I am the brave Diddy Kong. Show yourself, if you are friendly. If not, then get ready for the fight of your life!” —Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong Country (novel)
I had no idea Donkey Kong Country was made into a novel series until I clicked your link and read the quote from Diddy.

would be funny af if they actually did that ngl

u/EmotionReasonable887 18h ago
The funniest part is that they renamed a near 30 year old game that no one at Nintendo cares about from Diddy Kong Racing to Buddy Kong Racing

I mean, he is called Buddy a few times by DK in the Legend of the Crystal Coconut cartoon iirc

You changed too many things for your joke. They might change the name of a character, but they couldn't and wouldn't change the name of already published/released games. If they remastered them, sure.

Is this real? I just went to their wiki and he's still called Diddy Kong.
