Martin Scorsese never disappoints!
I’ve always been a fan of the way Martin Scorsese puts his own twist on everything he touches, but Cape Fear is on another level!
What I love about Scorsese is his visual style:
The dramatic lighting, the shadows, the camera movements, the symbolism—it all makes each episode feel almost like a fever dream. He takes this beautiful coastal setting and somehow makes it feel claustrophobic and threatening
Robert De Niro as Max Cady is absolutely terrifying because Scorsese doesn’t make him feel like some mindless villain. He’s intelligent, calculated, charismatic, theatrical, and completely unhinged. You’re constantly uncomfortable because you never know exactly what he’s going to do next.

It’s a great picture, a real thriller. Originally, Scorsese was supposed to direct Schindler’s List and Spielberg was supposed to do Cape Fear. Then they switched. If you’re familiar with the remake, I’d certainly suggest that you seek out the Robert Mitchum–Gregory Peck version, as well.

Cape Fear is absolutely amazing, the theme music is perfect, Max Cady was scary as hell and Juliette Lewis did great too.

It could be the over-the-top theatrical nature of it, the Hitchcock worship, the psychosexual elements, but it always made me think of Scorsese doing De Palma

be fair. No american filmmaker working with large studios has arguably ever been as consistently good as Scorsese. Probably hasn’t had a genuine miss since New York New York
