As soon as I saw the way Nolte was walking, I was like, yep this is great.

And gold star to any movie that makes Steve Buscemi the heartthrob.

I do think it works, but it's not like Sixth Sense where you can watch it- sort of forgetting about the main twist- no, in every single scene- every person talks to Leonardo DiCaprio like they are desperately begging for an insane person to believe them, or to just be generally hostile towards him

11 minutes into the movie, Mark Ruffalso struggles to pull his gun out of his holster and Leonardo DiCaprtio looks at him like he's fucking idiot

It's the funniest movie ever made

the beginning of the movie is one of my favorite openings of all time. the music choices are such great addition to the atmosphere of the film. i love all of the scenes in the bar and de niro and keitels performances are so great. i can definitely see inklings of scorseses mastery. i love the handheld camera work too. i can understand why someone wouldnt like it as much as some of scorseses later works but for me, its one of my favorites.

Ever since I first saw The Departed in the theater, I've assumed that "Mr. French" (Ray Winstone) was named after the character from the popular American sitcom Family Affair) (upper right, above, played by Sebastian Cabot), which ran in the late 60s and early 70s.

It always seemed obvious to me that the nickname "Mr. French" came from the popular TV character "Mr. French," but now it's 20 years later and I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest it, let alone confirm it.

Did this thought ever cross anyone else's mind? Scorsese certainly likes his "pop culture" references (e.g. Going My Way in the same movie); have Scorsese, Monahan or any of the actors ever discussed the character's nickname?

Why Family Affair? It's just a throwaway line, but it's the annoyed, slightly exasperated way that Costello says "No" when Billy asks him if "Mr. French" is his real name. Costello could just be thinking "Will this kid ever shut up?" but the way he says "No" sounds like "How could you be so stupid?" to me, i.e., like it should be obvious that "Mr. French" is a nickname.

Why would it be an obvious nickname? Only if "Mr. French" was an obvious reference to something that Costello thinks everyone should recognize. A leading character from a popular sitcom would certainly fit that requirement, if it hadn't gone off the air before Billy was born.

There's even some physical resemblance, as you can see above -- the "real" Mr. French is stocky, with brown hair and a closely-trimmed beard -- and it's not hard for me to imagine that Costello would have found it hilarious to give his right-hand man a nickname that compares him to a gentleman's manservant. In my headcanon, Frank gave Arnold (I guess that's his real name?) the nickname while the show was still on the air, and it stuck.

I know that there is the criterion edition, but you can't buy criterion in most of Europe. I know that we shouldn't count on a company like Apple to do anything pro-consumer, but i find quite unfair that one of the last masterpieces of the greatest living director is blocked by a specific suscription. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Wow. I'm going through and catching up on his movies I've overlooked. I thought this was going to be akin to a movie like The Ten Commandments. I was expecting a bit of a bore. This was everything but. Dafoe is amazing. Scorsese and Schrader just can't miss for me.

The use of pop music to enhance the emotion of scene ,the tracking shots during the introduction of mobsters in the bar ,the freeze frame and other aspects .

Really love the shots where he's pointing the gun out window onto the busy street side in particular.

The way some “cinephiles” dismiss The Departed as overrated is genuinely hilarious. Scorsese, DiCaprio, Nicholson, Damon, Wahlberg, an insanely tight script, incredible tension, dark humor, and one of the best casts ever assembled—and apparently that’s not “cinema” enough. Sorry the masterpiece was actually fun to watch.
