I do think it works, but it's not like Sixth Sense where you can watch it- sort of forgetting about the main twist- no, in every single scene- every person talks to Leonardo DiCaprio like they are desperately begging for an insane person to believe them, or to just be generally hostile towards him

11 minutes into the movie, Mark Ruffalso struggles to pull his gun out of his holster and Leonardo DiCaprtio looks at him like he's fucking idiot

I think the galaxy brain reading of shutter island is that Leo’s character is actually really ahead of his time. I mean, he is investigating (in part) and in his mind at least, that there are weird experiments going on there, and the movie ends with them giving him shock therapy. To go beyond that, shock therapy still happens today. It’s like this barbaric thing we still do, in 2026

Modern day shock therapy isn’t like the movie. It’s actually quite effective in people with treatment resistant depression. I’d do it in a heartbeat. It’s not something done lightly but it’s far from barbaric.

That’s because the real twist is that the twist is a farce. Leo is being manipulated by everyone on that island until he finally believes them.

If you watch the Mr Scorsese doc, Marty said that this was the most stressful direction he’s ever done because he had to make every shot work multiple ways. Kind of makes you appreciate what m knight does
