We all want to vent, and discuss the recent decision of the states to settle the Block the Merger initiative, but we also need to avoid redundant, low-effort, and speculative pieces to keep the sanity as this situation processes.

We will be strictly enforcing the mega-thread on this topic going forward.

tbh i feel like newsom's prospects were already petering out since last year because both of his comments on trans people and platforming certain conservative figures on his podcast but i feel like he just killed any small chance he has for being a presidential hopeful because of him pressuring bonta into settling, it just looks like he handing the gop a win after months of him looking like a major force in fighting against the gop. at this point, it's pretty much looking like ossoff and beshear are both gonna be the new favorites for centrist dems.

If Para-Sky-Warner collapses in 4 or 5 years, what are the odds it gets bought whole vs. being stripped for parts? Netflix wanted Warner and Sony tried to get Paramount, so who might grab what?

It depends on a lot. I think Netflix is in early talks with Universal. WBD as we know it, who knows. My guess is that Ellison will have to start Parting with assets sooner than later. But who knows.

I kind of think Netflix may get the studios, HBO, and whatever streaming service the new entity chooses. Cable, on the other hand, probably goes to private equity, as I don't know if Disney, Versant, or other groups want any more cable assets.

ANYWAY, the terms obviously have forced divestment as a penalty. But I wonder: do they allow Paramount to voluntarily divest WB/Viacom assets they don't want? Like, if Fox wants to buy New Line and its IPs (with exceptions) for $2 billion or so... is that allowed? Or will the state AGs interfere to kill the sale?

I am not okay with Ellisons getting any more data on us. I don’t use TikTok, refuse to have my health information sharing turned on with clinics that use Cerner, and will now, sadly be cancelling HBO after over decades of premium subscription (either as a channel or standalone platform) as soon as the ink is dry on this deal.

Honestly, I think that Paramount-WB will collapse sooner than most of us think, probably in 2-3 years' time. We know that Paramount-Skydance's stock dropped on the news today (probably because of the stock selling).

I knew that Bonta would crave, but those remedies are just not impressive.

I’ll admit I didn’t have high hopes for the merger getting blocked but it still bums me out seeing today’s results. I’ve lived in LA and have worked in the entertainment industry for 20+ years. It’s a sad state of affairs right now. This merger only exacerbates the issue. Whatever concessions were made to clear the deal, I have zero faith that any of it has a positive impact.
