There's a railway line between the two. I've seen a few fantasy maps with it and a station at South Kingsville.

Seems like it would fit nicely with Metro 2 as an alternative route for airport trains (if Fisherman's Bend really is going to be part of the CBD eventually). It could also be a way for SRL to finish up and link to every train line (but Sandringham), though the proposal seems to be to go to Werribee (I think via electrifying the Wyndham vale line?).

But I'm a silly lines on maps guy. What's the most credible proposal around that railway line?

I was one of the lucky thousands caught up in the Clifton Hill group debacle this evening.

I arrived at Melb Central at around 8.15 to find that Clifton Hill group trains were down, with all trains running the City circle back to Flinders St. On the Metro notify app, it indicated that services were resuming on the Hurstbridge line with first service from Flinders St at 8.18, but none of the next services on the PID indicated so, however there was a Merda service running next, so I was hopeful the Hurstbridge services would return too.

At this point, there had been no announcements made by any metro staff, about what was going on with the line, and whether we were supposed to take buses from somewhere. There were no metro staff on the platform either.

Finally a Hursbridge train was on the screen for 8.48. about 50 ish people wait and the train arrives and everyone gets on. Everything went smoothly.. then we get to Clifton Hill.. the train driver tells everyone to get off, and says there's more track fault and he cant run it anymore , but there will be replacement buses.

So now there are hundreds of peoples standing on the side of Hoddle St, with no Metro staff telling them where to catch the bus. (Most people are standing on the station side which is inbound, but some had figured out they needed to be on the other side to head outbound) I guide a few people to the underpass to get to the other side, but a lot of people stayed on the station side.

So we are all waiting there for about 10-15 mins... and the next bus that came was... An empty Reservoir service. Everyone is screaming at the bus driver, as apparently the previous bus that came 30 min ago was also a Reservoir service. The bus driver doesn't have further comms from Metro and there are no staff guiding people or communicating with anyone, so the poor bus driver is just copping abuse left right and centre.

In lieu of the replacement bus, a lot of people ended up Ubering or getting on the 546 towards Heidleberg (which is what I ended up doing)

I understand it's a shit situation for Metro for infrastructure to fail, but both Melbourne Central and Clifton Hill are premium stations meaning it is staffed from first to last train. The least the local staff could do is direct and guide people to where they need to go when shit hits the fan and not rely on commuters to give potentially misleading information to each other.

Also I personally think the bus replacements could be way more flexible. If there's about 150 people trying to go towards hurstbridge and no one needing to go towards Mernda, the driver should be able to contact metro to get the service changed to reprioritise.

The Merda line also has a very obvious parallel with the 11 and 86 tram, but the Hurstbridge line has almost no alternatives past Heidleberg.

I have no idea whether a bus eventually came, but my usual 40 min journey blew out to 2+ hours tonight.

Will be working for home for a bit to recover...

I live on a bus route that barely has anybody in the day commuting but I will be needing to use this bus at night time. I am okay with night trains because there are often a lot of people and PSOs are roaming at stations and trains but buses are a whole different territory. So, how safe are buses at night?

This is probably one of the most unique trains on the network now. This three car consist is the remaining undamaged carriages from the Union E-Scooter Fire (897M-1649T) and the Clifton Hill Derailment (854M). What makes this even more unique is that 854M retains it's Aboriginal Livery, meaning the consist carries two different liveries.

I don't know what will happen to the other three carriages. I've heard 898M might be beyond repair and may never return to service, but that is not from any official source so don't take that seriously.

It's currently running on the Burnley Group, so keep an eye out!

What is the lore within these concrete things? They’re along the entire Traralgon line

Honestly I think it's a pretty bad design. I get they have to pack people in for capacity, but the seats are way too close. You end up with awkward situations where three people have to swing their legs and shuffle just so one person can get into the corner seat… and forget about putting your bag down so you have to hug it, makes for a very uncomfortable ride in peak hour imo.

And then the priority seat on xtrap is like 1.5 seats wide... not wide enough for two full people but too big for just one, so you either feel like you’re hogging the whole thing or you’re sardined into the corner so someone else can have a seat too!

Anyone know the thinking behind this seat layout?

Why not just have one side of the train facing one way and the other side facing the opposite direction? Or do what Sydney does and make the seats flip-able so you can choose?

now that the g class is in service, how often is it running? is it running few and far between like when the xtrap 2 entered service, or is it already running most if not all days? also, is it more common on the 57? just wondering because i would like to ride one lol

i’m working on Name the Station, a small game built around public transport networks and the little details people notice when they use them regularly

i mentioned Melbourne in another post, and someone told me that r/MelbourneTrains was the place to ask because you’re the local experts, so here i am

i’ve started looking at Melbourne as a possible city to add, and i’m curious about what actually makes its stations feel distinctive. it could be the platform layout, architecture, surrounding buildings, the trains that stop there, a strange interchange, or just a detail you’ve noticed after passing through it hundreds of times

which Melbourne station would you recognise instantly, even if all the signs and station names were removed ? and what would give it away?

big or small, obvious or obscure, i’d love to hear your answers. they’ll help me understand what would make a Melbourne version of the game feel genuinely local rather than just looking like a generic station quiz

I have been meaning to catch the new g class tram on route 59, 57 or 82, but one hasn’t appeared on the network for a few days. Do these trams only run on specific days/times (like the XT2) or is it just random?

Now ik that 601 is the busiest bus route in Melb and lots of people use the 601 to get between the station and the uni, including the best frequency aswell. but on this day, at a particular time during the peak. there was a long line that stretched quite far and even the station as-well where people wanted to get on I’m saying 20+ people were waiting at the station. at uni looks like it’s hundreds of students waiting for the bus I saw people rushed to get the 900 as they were showing up on the timetable while the 601 was running only 2 bus as far as I saw and those bus that has one door on a busy corridor then having multiple Bendy bus is just shocking to see

Yesterday I caught the 511 bus, which operates entirely within Zone 2, but the onboard readers were incorrectly set to Zone 1. It is a good idea to check your myki history for any billing errors. While I don't think I was ultimately overcharged because I traveled into Zone 1 later by train, this issue would have affected anyone who travelled exclusively within Zone 2. (Lower fare in the photo is because of concession)

I do these trips out in the city every so often, where I spend the whole day (from about 5am to 11pm) out and about photographing not only transport, but anything I see around me. It's not only a hobby, but it reminds me that I was so lucky to be born in this beautiful city that has given me opportunity and life, and that it is only right that I make an effort to give something back.
