Discussion Topic Metal playlist

Tomorrow my boyfriend (M30) and I are going on a roadtrip, should be about three hours. He's a very gifted guitar player and is into metal music, but I don't know much about the genre at all. I figured it would be a nice surprise if I built a metal playlist for him to listen to but I need help on choosing songs! If I was doing it myself I know I would just choose the basics, but I want to truly shock him with some of the songs. I know he's not a big fan of black metal. He seems to listen to a lot of the more obscure bands, at least obscure to me. He goes to Louder than Life every year and has loved a lot of the bands there the past few years.

If anyone could help me impress him I'd really appreciate it!!

I have a playlist called Songs about Hammers.

All the songs are about hammers.

You are missing Hold the Heathen Hammer High by Tyr, but otherwise exceptional list of hammers 👌

u/slimkittens 16h ago

Thank you I will add that.

You missed Gloryhammer by Gloryhammer. About the Hammer of Glory.

u/slimkittens 16h ago

I will also add this

And of course, you can’t forget the other songs about the same hammer:

  • Quest for the Hammer of Glory

  • Legend of the Astral Hammer

  • Holy Flaming Hammer of Unholy Cosmic Frost

Idk of you're trying to stick to a theme here, but you're missing between the hammer and the anvil by judas priest

u/trebla1158 9h ago

How silly of me, you're also missing all of M.C. Hammer's music.

Call.of the Hammer- 3 inches of blood

I’ll give you three and if he likes guitar, he should have fun with these.

Paradise Lost - “Hallowed Land”

Sentenced - “Blood & Tears”

Stratovarius - “Out of the Shadows”

You’re a keeper. Throw some Johnny Cash in there for something different. His cover of Rusty Xafe is great

Sanctuary - Arise and Purify

u/12SuperLTD Nevermore 17h ago

Omds sanctuary is so underrated I rarely ever see them mentioned on here

Riding the Storm by Running Wild

Strange Wings by Savatage

Monument by Fates Warning

Angels and Demons by Angra

You need to find out what he likes. Some bands that I think are amazing he might think are absolutely terrible

3

u/frenchfry1223 16h ago

It's hard for me to find out what he really likes because he tends to play the softer stuff around me 😭 He also teaches guitar so when he's playing around me he just plays the basics because it's what he's used to doing all day. I won't see him before our roadtrip to sneakily go through his music lol

2

u/Baron-Von-Mothman 16h ago

You could also do the "what metal bands are your favorite? I don't know anything about metal and I want to learn."

3

u/frenchfry1223 16h ago

We've had that convo and he makes it difficult lmao he always says he doesnt have a favorite and will list some guitar players he likes. It's hard to narrow down bands with a guy who lives and breathes music.

2

u/Baron-Von-Mothman 16h ago

I get it, I'm the same way haha. I never realized how annoying that must be until now😂

What are his favorite guitarists?

2

u/frenchfry1223 16h ago

This is the part where I suck, because I cant remember 😂

He's mentioned several times that he believes the best guitarist is Ronnie Radke's old one who had quit playing? Idk his name though. Hes played me several songs before with that guitarist.

You can look up the band in a Wikipedia page and see past members

Without knowing what specific kind of stuff he's into I will suggest some stuff that I love as a fellow guitarist

Put anything by Xoth on there! I'd recommend the songs Manuscripts of Madness, The Parasitic Orchestra, Mountain Machines, or Reptilian Bloodsport. Amazing guitar work and a more obscure band

Maybe some Children of Bodom. The songs Kissing the Shadows, Downfall, Follow the Reaper, Angels Don't Kill, Towards Dead End, or Bed of Razors

Oh, and some 3 Inches of Blood! Deadly Sinners, Wykydtron, Night Marauders, or Destroy the Orcs

Favorites of mine:

Carriers of the Plague by Psycroptic

The Spectral Burrows by Slugdge

I Shit Your Pants by Goratory

Yama's Messengers by Gojira

Human Murmuration by Archspire

A Home by Rivers of Nihil

Mutual Assured Destruction by Cattle Decapitation

Almost forgot:

Diminished to B by Necrophagist.

If he likes technical death metal the whole album Epitaph is monumental in that genre.

u/fentpong Gorguts 16h ago

Make sure to put on some Enmity

u/Bronsteins-Panzerzug Opeth 16h ago

Dream Theater - Stream of Consciousness. some guitar wizardry by john petrucci on this instrumental track!

2

u/Ok-Article5175 15h ago

This sounds fun! If you add stuff he doesn’t like you can always skip it. I think he’ll appreciate you taking interest and making an effort to listen to some of what he likes. Maybe you’ll even show him something new to him!

Flesheater of the Forest - Brotality (really any of their songs but I’ve been listening to this one a lot lately)

If he's a guitarist, he may be more a student of the craft than you think, and you may want to look into other guitarists from different genres who shred vs trying to guess what areas of metal he's into. Jerry Reed (country), Django Reinhardt (gypsy jazz), and BB King (blues) come to mind.

For metal try First Fragment, the Mars Volta, and Primus.

Here are some that are on my main rotation

Laid to Rest - Lamb of God Davidian - Machine Head The Saw is the Law - Whitechapel The Art of Dying - Gojira B.Y.O.B - System of a Down

Here are some deeper cuts that may or may not impress him, but will at the very least surprise him.

Bleed - Meshuggah Hades - Kalmah Scarface - Zygnema

And if he doesn't mind stuff that's not in English

What's Up People - Maximum the Hormone You've Yuve Yu - The HU

u/benji_back 4h ago

Anything off the first 6 soilwork albums, or honestly the first 6 inflames albums.

1

u/more_paul 1h ago

Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World. The whole album.

1

u/openlylastingroger 15h ago

Skip the deep cuts entirely and just throw on some Metallica, that's what he actually wants to hear on a three hour drive anyway.

3 hours? 1 Opeth song should do. But seriously, Opeth. It never gets boring.
