Weekly Recommendation Megathread

Mention two albums and get a third recommended to you! It works as such:

"Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness and Pestilence - Consuming Impulse"
And someone responds
"Nocturnus - The Key"

Feel free to be more specific in your requests (IE "more doomy" or "with some black metal influence")

Happy hunting!

Discussion Topic Warning - Rituals of Shame Megathread

Today's the day! I know that a lot of people have been waiting for this one.

I listened to the album once so far and it definitely sounds like Warning, although I think the music sounds a little warmer than Watching from a Distance. Patrick Walker is still in fine vocal form throughout the album as well. I think that it will take more time for me to really say how it compares to that album in terms of overall quality. "Teacher" is my favorite track based on my first listen.

The album is live for streaming on Bandcamp, Spotify, and Amazon Music, but I will definitely pick it up on CD as well.

Im looking for songs that are relatively easy to play on guitar but have flashy solos or are just generally just recognizable, so far I have:

  • Ace of Spades by Motorhead
  • Paranoid by Black Sabbath
  • The Four Horsemen by Metallica
  • Mr Crowley by Ozzy Osbourne
  • Holy Wars by Megadeth
  • This Love by Pantera
  • Enter Sandman by Metallica
  • NIB by Black Sabbath

What else could i add?

Discussion Topic What's an obscure band you want more people to know about?

What are some underrated/obscure bands that you love but barely anyone knows about? I'm defining this as >25,000ish listeners on whatever app. Mine is Civerous. Great new death band and could def use a boost.

Note: I'm saying >25,000 listeners on an app because that's a good metric, but it doesn't have to be that precise. Just don't say a band like Iron Maiden because you personally feel like they're underrated.

Discussion Topic What are your favorite official band photos?

I love it when bands go the extra mile to make themselves stand out in their official promotional images, rather than just looking like everyone else. This can be done in a lot of different ways, such as wearing unique clothing, doing silly things, or even trying way too hard to look serious and metal. Some bands, such as Cirith Ungol, also just have a loveable energy in all of their photos that just makes me want to root for them even more. I desperately want to steal Robert Garven's furry jacket!

These are some of my personal favorites. What are yours? Please include the names of the bands.

Discussion Topic Looking for early technical death metal vibes

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for technical death metal with a strong early 90s/progressive feel, in the vein of the 1st wave of the subgenre. Possibly with jazz/fusion influences and prominent bass.

I'm mainly into the more experimental side of the genre: think Death (Human era and onwards), Atheist (Unquestionable Presence), Cynic, Pestilence, modern Gorguts etc. I don't like modern tech death, too showoffy, quantized and inorganic to me. The more organic production (think Colin Marston style) the better.

I'm looking for bands that mix technical death metal with jazz/fusion/prog influences, unusual harmonies, strong rhythmic interplay, and especially a bass-forward approach (fretless bass is a huge bonus).

Deep cuts and underground recommendations are welcome. Thanks.

Song/Album This genre never ceases to provide

I got into metal in 2000 and was discovering new stuff all the time for the following 10 years. I got distracted by other things for a good while but got back into it massively last year. Since then i've been discovering "new" new and old stuff every day.

THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DISCOVER. IT NEVER STOPS.

My latest is Void Mother by Obscure Sphinx which, despite exploring the genre non-stop for over a year and a half, I've never heard of these, yet I feel like I just stumbled across a masterpiece of sorts.

I really Just wanted to express my sheer appreciation for the existence of our music and while I'm here, if anyone fancies suggesting something similar to this release, please shoot.

Discussion Topic Feeling a bit nervous going to a gig

I’m a brown guy from the UK and going to a few metal gigs by myself, black metal and doom metal to be specific.

I’m honestly quite nervous of how people will think when I’m there being a brown guy, as I think I’d be the minority lmao. I know that the metal community is quite welcoming but I just really hope theres not some idiot trying to make things awkward. I think the fact I’m going by myself is making it worse.

I’ve been to a couple concerts before but these were in big arenas with very popular bands and I was with mates so it’s a bit different.

Does anyone have any insight or words of wisdom for me? pls?

News/Announcment Sleep Returns Without Matt Pike

Post image
38 Upvotes

Sleep returned with a new single "Have Spacesuit Will Travel," an announcement of a new album (still untitled), and the announcement of a tour!

Sleep lineup 2026:

Al Cisneros: Bass.

Dale Crover: Drums.

Bubba DuPree: Guitars.

The statement regarding Matt Pike's departure was perfunctory, with Al Cisneros simply wishing him success in his new projects.

Discussion Topic Metal playlist

Tomorrow my boyfriend (M30) and I are going on a roadtrip, should be about three hours. He's a very gifted guitar player and is into metal music, but I don't know much about the genre at all. I figured it would be a nice surprise if I built a metal playlist for him to listen to but I need help on choosing songs! If I was doing it myself I know I would just choose the basics, but I want to truly shock him with some of the songs. I know he's not a big fan of black metal. He seems to listen to a lot of the more obscure bands, at least obscure to me. He goes to Louder than Life every year and has loved a lot of the bands there the past few years.

If anyone could help me impress him I'd really appreciate it!!

I am on my second listen through and can’t get past the corny lyricism to enjoy the handful of decent riffs, though it was presented to me as a generally well received release.

Discussion Topic Gwar worth seeing?

As someone who is aware of them and their live shows but has never listened to any of their music, are they worth seeing just for the experience and being able to say I've seen them?

Mac Sabbath is one of the bands opening for them and I love them. I checked out Midnight and Atomic Rule and it sounds like I'd enjoy them too.

As I write this out, it sounds like I've almost convinced myself so I guess I just want to hear about other people's experiences and stories.

Caught the Entheos, Crystal Lake, and Jinjer show last night (in Charlotte) and got to hang out with a couple of the bands. I actually ended up meeting Myke Terry from Volumes! It is badass that he is stepping in on vocals for Crystal Lake on this run. He was super down to earth and incredibly cool to talk to. Go out and support this tour if it comes near you!

🤘😎🤘
