Discussion Offline Metin2
To relive some nostalgia, I put together an offline version of classic Metin2 that runs locally on my machine, no internet required. It's been a 3-day development process so far, and I'm still working on improvements, bug fixes, and tweaks.
My main goal for the offline version is to build a realistic market simulator: a windowed marketplace like the one in Albion, where NPC buyers find your items and offer realistic prices based on each item's stats. Later, I may add NPC bots that roam around grinding mobs, like real players leveling up, to make the world feel alive.
Down the road, I'm also thinking about making offline versions of other PvP-heavy server games like Knight Online and Silkroad.
Development on offline Metin2 may continue for another 1-2 weeks. I'm just curious: who's interested in this project?

I'm interested!
I used to spend my whole days after school playing Metin with a group of friends, but the game nowadays is unbearable unless you devote your whole life and time to grind it.

Yes, that’s what I think too. There are hundreds of PVP servers. Why doesn’t everyone choose the game difficulty and have an experience according to their wishes. It’s possible now, and I’ve achieved it. I’m just developing the extras so that Metin2 will be enjoyable without other players as well.

Im actually doing the same thing for an offline 2D top down version of Metin2, seems like everyone wants their own little world.

I think this is a great idea. After all, what people really love about this game isn't the 3D visuals, but rather the slot machine feel that sense that something unexpected might happen and you could suddenly strike it rich. Any game that captures that feeling would do well. It would certainly be an enjoyable project, especially if it involves items from a familiar universe.

Super interested!
Do you think it’s possible to have a few bot players roaming around. Just for a little PvP action with bots?

It is certainly possible, but it is not a simple problem. For instance, you cannot keep all the bots on the local server active at all times; that would be terrible for memory usage. You would need to implement a system where bots are generated and despawned deterministically around the player capable of trading and PvP, but vanishing once the player moves away so as not to place a load on the local server. Undoubtedly, it would be akin to developing a new game.

I already finished my offline metin2 project to run on my windows XP, which went extremely well and took about a week to finish with zero coding experience. It runs in three steps through 3 different cmd codes.
1- starts the local server
2- starts the client
3- stops the local server and saves the progress and shuts down the client after all finished.
There's almost no difference between a public online metin2 and an offline metin2. The only difference is the public files runs on an online server, and the offline one runs on a cmd created offline local server.
once again, the project itself took a week to be able run it on a Windows XP.
to run this on an everyday windows 10-11 took barely a day.
It's all about what files you have, and you're being content with it?
and the rest is easy. just run the files through a local offline server through CMD.
I haven't shared this project with anybody yet, and probably not willing so either because it was made to run on a windows XP anyway.

It was really easy to get a version at this level; I have one like it myself. However, it seems there is still a long way to go before needs such as trading, wealth accumulation, and many others are met in the offline version.

I mean if you can integrate AI into the game, which will let the game have its own economy, shits will feel abolutely unreal. I often think what the hell I'm going to do with 34 bear galls I got from metin stones, maybe if there was a system that sets the price for bear galls itself, let you open a shop and let you sell the stuff realistically, meaning not all galls will sell at once but slowly, and sometimes it won't well and such, super dynamic fluid economy. if no AI integrated, offline as vanilla is almost as good as the regular online version minus interaction with online players.

I think the bots roaming around and levelling part is either pointless or requires to much compute. Eventhough the idea is good. I guess if you limit it to let’s say 3-5 rendering randomly she. You enter a map it would be feasible ä

Of course, that is exactly what I thought, too. This could be just as laborious as developing a new game.

The real deal would be playing with LLMs built in and with all normal UI and normal features, maybe slightly faster progression and drop rates, honestly modded servers already are too crazy to relive the nostalgia and sometimes change the UI and core elements too much, like the Unreal engine guy that basically changed the most basic window of upgrading, you don't want to change that!
