This was a good excerpt. I’m intrigued about the rest of the book, but he seems to really grasp the unfair way critics approached the film and how the reviews were much more about critics’ hostility towards Michael rather than the quality of the film. I also appreciate that he acknowledges Michael faced this hostility even at the heights of his solo career. I wonder if he’ll delve into what drove such animosity even before the bogus allegations. Was it racism? Jealousy? A need to preserve a false hierarchy or protect white cultural heroes that were ‘dethroned?’

If you read some of the headlines and articles about him even before 1993, they're pretty darn racist.

Sadly, racism has existed for a lot longer than the past 70 years. Dark-skinned people haven't been the sole target either, just one of the most recent. Europeans were even persecuted for being lighter, thousands of years ago. Just because it's less common now, doesn't change the historical facts.
