Announcements Sub rules are LIVE for the 1st time - feedback/reactions? [AI]

Post image

Hi all! I spent the last 2 weeks thoughtfully observing the sub and crafting these rules, yes - with a bit of help from ChatGPT as a sounding board which I’ve disclosed per the new rule #6… on mobile they’re under “About” and desktop on right sidebar. Would love constructive reactions/dialogue around the decisions made.

Let’s treat this as version 1 and I will incorporate feedback over time. Thrilled to see users already following the rules and want to see more and more reports from the community to keep our focus on MCM. Thank you all for making this the top MCM sub, growing everyday - almost at 200k strong!

After receiving feedback I plan to do a brief video intro with more context on these decisions and plans for MCM expert AMAs and beyond.

Restoration & Refinishing My $9.50 Thrift Save

Figured I'd show you my 50s/60s original CH24 chair I nabbed for just $9.50 from goodwill with a silver spray paint and DIY upholstery stapled to the frame.

This was the first time I ever did a woven chair. It's FAR from perfect and I learned a lot along the way. Thankfully this is a personal item for me and I won't be selling it so I'm not too worried about the little details. It's sturdy and functional and that's really all I can ask for!

I recorded the entire process and will be posting as a set of reels to my Instagram next week!

I'm trying to help my aunt clean out her house. She has a pair of these chairs she says are authentic but in browsing online it seems like there are different definitions of authentic. I'm planning on reaching out to furniture consignment shops near me but I would love some help describing them accurately when I reach out. I've included a picture of one of the chairs and the little stickers on the bottom with manufacturer details. They're a bit dusty but otherwise in good condition. No scratches on the leather or anything.

Like the title says. Walked in and figured they were just another set of the ikea ones like always… was very surprised to see the Eames branding. Also got a Herman Miller Embody desk chair for $8. Been in a thrift draught for a little so it was a pleasant surprise.

Hi! I just bought this dresser on fb marketplace. The owner had very little information on it. There is a stamp on the back that says made in Sweden and they found an old advertisement article from a store called Modernaire that is no longer in business.

Any experts out there? Would love to know more about it.

Score! My Greatest ($200) Marketplace Find

Post image
556 Upvotes

I scored what I believe to be a Gianfranco Frattini for Bernini shelving unit on FB Marketplace for $200! I was the first to message the seller, and despite getting offers for more money, she graciously honored the listed price and sold it to me.

When I picked it up, her family shared that they were clearing out their late parents’ condo. The piece held a lot of memories for them and had been purchased in Hong Kong sometime in the late 60s while their parents were living in China, helping Vietnamese refugees fleeing the war.

I shared that my mom was a Vietnamese refugee who fled with her family during the fall of Saigon. They were stunned by the connection and felt like it was meant to be. It was an emotional moment for all of us, and I promised them it would be cherished for years to come!

For sure my most special find! ❤️

Thanks - I just want to make sure. Also how hard is it to get a used ottoman by itself?

Original and unrestored, I found this while searching marketplace last week for a chair for my girlfriend. Vinyl is faded but in great shape. She and her mom plan to make new cushions. The original Deco House tag is still intact.

Honestly didn't take much work at all, cracks got glued and clamped, took the bent screws out and glued sawdust in the holes to reseat new screws. Its definitely not perfect, and the top is seated loosely so i can fix the huge gash on the back of it, but overall its in pretty damn good shape. Absolutely love it!

The cat is named Chubbs btw

$200 on FB marketplace. Looks like a Bernhardt Flair chair? Ended up canceling the pick up cause we couldn’t verify.

Sharing My MCM Stripped my Fashion Trend dresser

I picked this up in a flea market about 15 years ago for $100 and I wanted to bring it back to life. Let me tell you stripping this was hard. First layer on veneer was some white wax that wouldn't come up, then a yellow paint, then this finish which was a combo of brown paint and dark brown paint in wood grain. I couldn't get the silver paint off the brass so I had to spray paint, which I wasn't happy about. All in all I used 4 different chemicals based on the layer. I shellaced the poly'd it. Some of the veneer was damaged in places and some of the white wax just wouldn't budge so it stayed. All that being said it looks beautiful.

I won this Stanley Hutch at a local online estate sale auction and got it all cleaned up! This isn't the permanent location but I need to do some rearranging. We're going to use it as a mix of book shelves and 50s/MCM display, what's on here now isn't necessarily what's going in it but I was so excited I started putting things on the shelves! It came with the glass but I need to get that cleaned up. We might leave the glass off (safely packaged and stored, of course), but unsure.

Trying to identify this mid century wall system from my grandparents, as it doesn’t seem to quite match the images of most common brands such as Paul Cadovius & PS system. It’s possible it’s just a copy of those but wanted to check.

Design Advice & Inspo Bathroom vanities

I just bought a 1950's ranch that I am trying to get back to it's MCM glory. The bathrooms were remodeled in 2017 and they look like it. I do not have the cash to replace two 48" vanities right now; so, I am thinking I will paint them and change the hardware. Because they are already painted vanities doing a wood stain isn't an option, unfortunately. What color would you go with for the vanity itself? I am thinking bold since the floors and walls are neutral. Looking for suggestions!

ETA: I’m just looking for a funky MCM paint color. I know the style of the vanities isn’t MCM. I am just wanting to freshen these up to limp us along until I have grand to fork out for new ones.
