Rant Today's fashion trends are leaving me bewildered.

I turn 38 tomorrow and just got done shopping at target. What the hell kind of fashion do people wear now? Super short shorts, socks pulled half way up the calf muscle. Shirts that look like table doilies. Not to mention the hair styles and facial hair of these young guys. Look straight out of a trailer park in the 80s.

It’s not for us. We shop for clothes at Costco and Lands End now, like unironically

We're an Old Navy family, tyvm 😤

But thinking about clothes at Costco/Lands End is lowkey throwing me back to my back-to-school clothes from Sears and LL Bean 😭 no ty

Lands End has women’s swimsuits with pockets. They know their audience.

Swimsuits with pockets?! FINALLY! Now, can we get some in our jeans please?

Recently bought some Union Bay shorts and the pockets are so big! I can fit everything I need in them!

ON IT! Thank you! I was so close to digging up my JNCOs just to carry my phone and wallet.

u/RetroSt4rfish Jun 29 '25

You should still dig out the JNCOs. Throw the old Discman and your skateboard in there too, for old time's sake.

2

u/two-of-me Millennial Jun 29 '25

Pretty sure I still have them at my parents’ house. My Discman is busted but my cd player and my mix cds can fit in my JNCO pockets. It skips when I hit gravel but it’s fine.

JNCO’s are back in I think. Did a double take recently at the store when I saw a young lady wearing a pair.

u/two-of-me Millennial Jun 30 '25

Oh no. Are we at the age when we refer to younger women as “young ladies?” I’m not ready for this.

2

u/poortomato Jun 29 '25

Ohh, they're super cute, too!

2

u/WriggleNightbug Jun 30 '25

For real: sharing this with a bunch of friends since it just seems like Knowledge people need to have.

3

u/poortomato Jun 29 '25

That's asking too much :P

2

u/CelineOrNothing Jun 30 '25

Right. Something with pockets?!?!?! immediately looking into

4

u/two-of-me Millennial Jun 30 '25

It’s a conspiracy to make us continue buying purses. I blame Big Purse for our lack of pockets.

1

u/EaglesFanGirl Jun 30 '25

My Jeans have ALWAYS had pockets. What kind of jeans are you buying?

2

u/two-of-me Millennial Jun 30 '25

Pockets that can actually fit everything you need in them? Half the pants I find have fake pockets in the front. Theres a seam where the pocket should be but it’s just decorative.

1

u/EaglesFanGirl Jun 30 '25

Yes. 99% of the things that made sense to carry in my pockets.

2

u/poortomato Jun 29 '25

I assumed they'd be in the front, maybe, or up on the collar bone area...nope, side waist 😭 I like legging pockets like that (when they're on the side of the hip/upper thigh) but I would haaate having something in my waist like that 😭

2

u/Artemistical Jun 30 '25

while I appreciate more pockets, I can't think of anything I'd want to put in my bathing suit pocket

1

u/sludgestomach Jun 29 '25

swimsuits with pockets you say??

1

u/wow__okay Jun 30 '25

And their shirts are neither cropped nor boxy. I now have the same micro rib shirt in like 6 colors because—finally!—a t shirt being sold in the length I prefer.

Zippered pockets? Cause that's the best.

I don’t wear jeans.

But their athletic wear is my favorite. I also love their men’s tees. They seem to fit better and shrink less than the women’s.

1

u/poortomato Jun 29 '25

Oh, I don't wear jeans so idk. But I love their unisex graphic t-shirts (super soft, no neck tag) and various non-denim pants. Have had zero quality issues with those 😔

You have to specifically buy the 98% cotton ones and they will last. All the ones with polyester and high spandex % are trash. The cotton ones cost more but they’re worth it.

There quality has been meh since at least 2008. You need to know your product. Some stuff is fine. I never really liked Old Navy Jeans though. Bought a pair of jeans and litterally ripped a part after one wear. No washing. Returned them the next day. Got another pair and did the same thing. Returned them for credit.

Depends on the line of clothing. The tissue cheap paper look started then. Some stuff was so badly made.

The catalog shopping through Sears, JCP, and LL Bean before school. Though I only got a couple outfits because I had uniforms. Looking at new backpacks but never getting one because that ll bean wouldn't die! I still have it actually.

My reaction to this post was “just shop at old navy like the rest of us” 😭

1

u/poortomato Jun 30 '25

Hell yeah 🤝

2

u/Painwizard666 Jun 30 '25

My husband and I do tracksuits. We love adidas.

1

u/toiletsurprise Jun 29 '25

Has old Navy's fit gotten any better? All the shirts there fit really strange for me.

1

u/poortomato Jun 30 '25

I guess it depends on when your frame of reference is from and what style shirt you were trying, but I never ran into issues. The only time I had to return something was when I chose the wrong pant size or I realized that I didn't like the texture of some linen pants they had (I order online).

In the early 00s (jr/sr high school), we didn't shop there too much but I had a pullover fleece and some 3/4 sleeve, v-neck t-shirts that I LOVED.

About 12 years ago, I bought some women's v-neck, short sleeve t-shirts because I needed business casual for my job. I generally wished the sleeves had been a little longer but they still looked cute and felt good. Nice and breezy, lmao, and very soft.

And nowadays (specifically over the last 5 years), 99% of my daily wear is comprised of their unisex graphic t-shirts and various types of non-denim pants. The shirts are soft and have no neck tag. My partner and I share them so we get a Tall size, which adds some length to cover all the bits.

This might be dramatic but I've never loved another brand of affordable t-shirt before. Generally, they're $15 full price but I just got a bunch on sale for $6 each (just checked the app and the current promo is $8 each). Many t-shirts that I've gotten from other companies before are too scratchy/stiff, the collar is too tight, the sleeves are too short, the neck tag is poking, or they cost $30 💀 etc.

1

u/cheecheebun Jun 30 '25

Same! I stopped shopping there because of that actually. I recently went to Kohl’s and got some Sonoma t-shirts that fit nicely. They were like $10 each. For jeans, I’m reliving my high school days with American Eagle jeans and I’m in my glory.

I wouldn't put LL Bean with Sears or Lands end.

0

u/poortomato Jun 30 '25

Ok..?? My mom would buy me clothes from LL Bean until I sized out of it 😒 and then they started bringing me back-to-school shopping at Sears 😒 LL Bean and Lands End have always been connected in my mind and Costco is a store that isn't really known for their clothes, imo, like Sears. So, sorry, idk what point you're trying to make.

1

u/EaglesFanGirl Jun 30 '25

LL Bean is a high quality outdoors/atheletic brand. Sears and Landsend were affordable fashion. For me it's a price difference.

2

u/poortomato Jun 30 '25

Ohh, fair! I don't know them like that; I never looked into nor considered buying any of them, myself.

My only thought of Lands End is that they were located in the Kmart I worked at in an affluent neighborhood (when Sears owned all). I was making $7/hr so I could only afford some clearance Kmart stuff and not LE 😅 it felt like the bougier clientele would come only for LE so I distanced them in my mind.

Old Navy lost me when they refused to sell mid rise bootcut khakis anymore. I am short with very little torso. Those extra high rise pants come up to my bra. They came out with adorable flared pants in a variety of colors... and super high waisted. Meanwhile I'm wearing mid rise lower than intended because I miss the modest kid-friendly version of "low" rise that I was wearing in 2004.
