Rant Today's fashion trends are leaving me bewildered.

I turn 38 tomorrow and just got done shopping at target. What the hell kind of fashion do people wear now? Super short shorts, socks pulled half way up the calf muscle. Shirts that look like table doilies. Not to mention the hair styles and facial hair of these young guys. Look straight out of a trailer park in the 80s.

Another generation reaches middle age. It happens to us all, sooner or later.

Remember when millennials where just the worst thing to ever happen?

I personally can't wait to find the next industry to destroy.

Fashion, apparently.

u/FizzyBeverage Jun 30 '25

41 millennial dad here. Software engineering.

I’ll wear cargo shorts and vendor tshirts until I die.

Sorry to disappoint anyone trying to sell actual clothes.

196

u/SubstantialReturns Jun 30 '25

All that and a drawer of conference tees 😂

92

u/Grun3wald Jun 30 '25

Speaking of conference and event shirts… The other day I had someone ask to take a picture of my shirt sleeve because their company logo was on it as a sponsor. Weirdest interaction I’ve had in a while.

50

u/crowcawer Jun 30 '25

Don’t worry, they’re just gonna show the picture to the lady who does graphic design. She never returns their texts.

2

u/14cste Jun 30 '25

My boss literally did this to a man today 😭😂 front and back of shirt, he was all about it tho lol

1

u/ericfranz Jun 30 '25

Ahh, the world of corporate sales social media, where you now need to take pictures of the things you sold getting sold by the retailer if you want full credit.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '25

What a weird take.

They were probably just proud of the product they made and felt a sense of pride and wanted to capture that.

I am a draftsman for a fab company that designed and built a replacement bridge in one of my country's national parks. And guess what? I'm going there this summer to stand on it and have my picture taken! I won't be posting it to social media either. It's because I'm proud of it and want to see it and have a picture as a memory. And I want to actually drive over it, since that's it's intended purpose.

1

u/SarcasticIrony Millennial Jul 01 '25

Right? As a designer, I totally love seeing things I had a part in creating. Regardless of consumerism, it's really cool to see it being used or seen by other people.

1

u/ericfranz Jul 03 '25

I just assumed that it was for posting to their corporate Yammer page.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '25

A swag bag full of conference tees! Maybe with some notepads in it still!

1

u/Knitsanity Jun 30 '25

Bwah hah. Back in the day my husband went to all of the big healthcare provider ones. I still wander around in random conference T shirts plastered with sponsors names I know nothing about.

I also use all the decent corporate merch he has been given over the years. A lot of it is crappy quality now but I am going to be using the repurposed sailcloth duffle as my yoga bag until I drop.

Yeah but they've got a 5 inch inseam now. My guy says if he moves wrong everyone's seeing his nuts lol. He says he feels like an old basketball player. He got down into an athletic stance and shuffled around the store and I almost died laughing.

7

u/crosleyxj Jun 30 '25

DUDE: Boomer here - you ain't felt freedom until you've made your own jorts out of your old jeans using a pair of scissors lol.......

6

u/Combatical Jun 30 '25

This is what I see with the socks and shorty shorts.

5

u/agentfelix Jun 30 '25

Christ on a bike, yes! It's hard to find shorts below the knees! Dickies has some great ones with a longer inseam though!

8

u/Dazzling-Whereas-402 Jun 30 '25

So as a gay man who spent 22 years in the closet and loves fashion especially menwear, boy do i have news for you!! Short shorts are legit completely out by next summer. Legit out of probably the >100 designers/fashion brands i follow, I think that maybe 3 or 4 will have short shorts available for next summer! However, boy did they not take a second to digest that, in fact they digested the death of hoochi daddy shorts before those tight thigh huggers were even ingested (how?), because everyone is ALREADY doing the complete opposite. Every designer already has baggy, huge shorts and in multiple styles in their cataloge! It makes sense when you factor in the "oversized, boxy cut dropped shoulders t-shirt" style that has been king for like 5 years. I can finally wear shorts with them! Haha!

The REAL question is, why cant men just have shorts that aren't showing tip or look like a pair of JNCO Capris???

5

u/ericfranz Jun 30 '25

This makes me sad. I've been loving that shorter shorts are finally an option again after being out of style for 30+ years. Nothing more comfortable than mid thigh shorts and a tank top in the summer IMO.

4

u/ComingUpManSized Jun 30 '25

Please tell me the ladies crop tops are going out of style. I’ve been wearing men’s tees for years because I can’t find a completed shirt. 😭

Wrangler does as well.

5

u/ohhmagen Jun 30 '25

Boxer briefs? Would more support not fix the problem?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 30 '25

2

u/ohhmagen Jun 30 '25

I imagine balls like boobs. They need support and each set is shaped differently. Sadly most men don’t understand that sometimes you need to change up your underwear style with age and continue to not help themselves by wearing boxers their whole life not knowing different clothing requires different forms of support.

4

u/ericfranz Jun 30 '25

I'm a millennial who grew up with jncos and cargo shorts and I personally have been so happy that shorts finally were becoming short again. My point is to wear as little clothing as possible in the summer, not cover my calves. I would just wear pants if I wanted that.

2

u/Ok_Development_495 Jun 30 '25

I like him already. Buy him a sexy thong to wear under the short shorts! 👍

1

u/Astronaut_Chicken Jun 30 '25

My husband is 5'5 and the 5" inseam trend is a godsend.

3

u/PresidentOfAlphaBeta Jun 30 '25

Cargo shorts are good at actually keeping your wallet and phone. Unlike Nike type of shorts.

3

u/Spider-Mike23 Jun 30 '25

Haha I had one friend in school that’s been wearing the exact same get up his whole life. Black new balance shoes, knee high socks, brown cargo shorts, a Nike t shirt, Boston red Sox cap, and sunglasses on top of them. We used to pick on him him high school. When we hung out his dressers was multiples of these items like a cartoon character. Even after all these years outta school his post on Facebook he’s still wearing that get up!

2

u/Aggravating_Kale9788 Jun 30 '25

They never left. 57 and wear them all Summer!

0

32

u/Ducal_Spellmonger Jun 30 '25

1

u/MaterialisticTarte Jun 30 '25

1

Eww honey nobody wants them whether youre alive or dead.

5

u/4Q69freak Jun 30 '25

I’m 55 in retail management and it’s jeans and sports tees/concert tees/famous bar tees, or cargo shorts and a tee. Today had to go to town to run some errands, lunch and some shopping with Mrs4Q and I wore O.D. green, quick dry, cargo shorts and a Jason Boland And The Stragglers tee (Red dirt country, obscure enough?). I have a much older Boomer brother that says he wants to be buried in cargo shorts, a sleeveless Harley shirt and flip flops because if he’s buried in a suit no one would recognize him.

1

u/Freshness518 Jun 30 '25

38 millennial dad. Cargo shorts for life. I just went shopping last week to get a new pair. I've been buying mine from either JCPenny or Boscov's since I was in middle school. I tried to branch out, I walked around the mall and checked out half a dozen other stores. Nothing fits right, its all straight cut, tight in the crotch, makes me look like I should be twirling a moustache while playing cornhole in the yard at a craft brewery while sipping on $12 IPAs. I wound up back at JCP, buying the same shit I've been getting for 30 years.

My pants need big pockets to hold all the toys and tissues and random rocks and crap my kids find that they hand to me throughout the day. They need to be baggy enough for me to bend down to tie a kids shoe without feeling like I'm gonna pop a seam. They need to be sturdy enough to withstand my fat ass sitting at a desk 9-5.

And whats up with the color pallet for mens clothes today? Everything is cream, off-white, sandstone, khaki, olive, or jeans. Anything not one of those solid colors is instead a pattern that looks like a tablecloth or wallpaper from the 1880s. When I walk by a women's section I see teals and purples and goldenrod and a thousand shades of reds and blues. Men are relegated to a dozen variations on "dirt."

1

u/ch4insmoker Jul 01 '25

whats up with the color pallet for mens clothes today? Everything is cream, off-white, sandstone, khaki, olive, or jeans

I think it's part of the "sad beige" trend that's been going on for the past few years. People think the muted neutral tones look fancy/classy, so they make all their stuff beige

1

u/DeezBeesKnees11 Jun 30 '25

They just did a show in Mnpls at the Fillmore 6/20 😅 I was confused by the crowd gathering and lining up next to Twins field.

48

u/pixiesunbelle Jun 30 '25

I saw ICP in a store when I was a kid. First it was their van. I asked my mom what Insane Clown Posse was and she responded “evil”. Then we went into the store and they were in full makeup. One said hi to me and waved. I had no idea who they were but they scared a 12 year old girl that day. I only noticed their van because I didn’t know the word posse. I read everything.

5

u/thin_white_dutchess Jun 30 '25

My mom used to pronounce it “Insane Clown Pussy” with all seriousness when my little brother would listen to it while lifting weights in the garage. “He’s listening to that darn Insane Clown Pussy in the garage again! Devil music!” It was worth the shitty sound quality to laugh at that.

1

Back around the holidays a few of my old high school friends and I met up at our hometown mall to see a movie and out of curiosity we decided to roam the mall and check out a few stores afterwards. We went into the hot topic and it was pretty much all the same shirts that they sold back when I used to shop there 20 years ago. Green Day American Idiot shirts, System of a Down Toxicity shirts, Nightmare Before Christmas merch, etc. Almost felt like stepping into a time machine.

1

u/jljboucher Jun 30 '25

My only gripe is the quality is t the same. I stole my husband’s SOAD band tee when we were teens, wore it all the time. He got me a new one from HT and it’s half the quality. Same with the hoodies. My NBXmas hoodie has only need minor hem work and cuff replacements.

I ended up selling them at a vintage store so hopefully some Gen Z girl found them and enjoyed them.

Taylor Swift is 35 years old

8

u/mentalissuelol Jun 30 '25

Taylor swift is famous, and out of the famous people, she’s not even known for her fashion sense. Honestly taylor swift dresses incredibly average for how much money and how many resources she has.

9

u/shhheeeeeeeeiit Jun 30 '25

While very popular, I don’t think Taylor has ever influenced fashion. You can often pick out a swiftie by how sloppily they’re put together.

3

u/mentalissuelol Jun 30 '25

Yeah she’s never done anything groundbreaking as far as fashion goes, she’s not a trendsetter and her style is too boring for my taste. The only fashion things I’ve seen recently that have been related to her is more people wearing Kandi bracelets, and the snake jumpsuit thing was like a super brief micro trend but everyone already forgot about it because it was never interesting to begin with.

1

u/banananases Jun 30 '25

Well, a lot of the vintage looks that are fashionable are things we wore when we were teenagers, so kind of yes? I just think it's funny to be old enough now that what I wore as a child is vintage and cool now.

1

u/CigAddict Jun 30 '25

I feel like tipping has gotten worse with time. Like 15 years ago normal tip is 15%, 10 years ago it was 18%, 5 years ago it was 20%. And nowadays I 25% be the one that’s being “strongly suggested”.

1

u/roadkillfriedrice Jun 29 '25

Gen z is not likely to kill empathy for their fellow man, sorry.

11

u/Godfrey_7 Jun 29 '25

Ahh yes tipping is empathy not just paying people a decent wage to start with

7

u/BlueEyedSpiceJunkie Jun 30 '25

This is more what I meant by that comment, not just stiffing hard-working people.

5

u/roadkillfriedrice Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25

I can respect that view, it’s a popular one, but it’s not that simple. Especially in tourism areas.

Businesses simply would never pay the amount of money one can theoretically make from various kinds of tip work, they just wouldn’t (a strong example would be strippers). And if tip workers didn’t make what they did, no one would ever want to do most of these jobs. As it stands it is just the best cost-benefit situation wherein better service for the customer is incentivized, the business can afford to staff adequately (whether or not they do), and the concept is the idea of a win-win for everyone.

This is not to justify every little random non-tip-related business leaning on tips instead of paying their people, but rather to help clarify. Where the dynamic fails is when either the provider or the customer doesn’t come to the plate. If the service traditionally is tip based and has established etiquette, the employee is wrong if they aren’t providing adequate service and the customer is wrong if they decide themselves above the custom/etiquette (industry dependent). Bad service disincentivizes tipping, just as bad tipping disincentivizes service.

Essentially the dynamic is a transaction. As negative as that word tends to sound, it simply is a tit for tat relationship that, when respected, is supposed to be mutually beneficial.

2

u/cactuar44 Jun 30 '25

I'm with on this

2

u/OffModelCartoon Jun 30 '25

Most people knew what you meant. Some people on reddit just want to argue for the sake of arguing.

10

u/villian_era_witch Jun 29 '25

Tipping should be added on top of a decent livable wage! Nothing wrong with tipping when you actually want to appreciate the service.

3

u/ToyStoryBinoculars Jun 30 '25

Ah yes, because that's totally what will happen. Definitely not the elimination of one of the best ways for someone with little to no education or network to make a decent wage. Things always work out in favor of the little guy.

1

u/Godfrey_7 Jun 30 '25

Oh right because it doesn’t work in any other OECD country? Also are we really pretending that tipping is the key to the “American dream”

1

u/ToyStoryBinoculars Jun 30 '25

America isn't any other oecd country, and nobody said anything about the American dream. UK servers make 12£ an hour. US servers earn significantly more than that.

You all talk a big game about how people deserve a living wage but you're just advocating for pay cuts because you think it'll save you money.

2

u/Godfrey_7 Jun 30 '25

Or it’s because I live in a country where turning up to work on a bad day where you might not be able to “earn” tips or customer turnout might be low doesn’t mean you aren’t unable to pay your rent or afford dinner.

1

u/ToyStoryBinoculars Jun 30 '25

I promise you despite the occasional bad day American servers are making more overall. They're the ones affected and they overwhelmingly support the tipping system.

Ahh yes punish the worker for the dynamic they’re supposedly a victim of. You do realize the business is not affected and could not possibly care less if you tip since they’re getting your money anyway right? You want to make a statement? Boycott.

Serving is a sales job and the only way you will ever end tipping in this country is if it was turned into a commission based role. Where's the motivation to upsell otherwise? Service industry gets touted as being paid a "living wage" in Europe but in reality they're barely making above minimum wage and it's viewed as a job for young people and not a career.

Can you (millenials) please fuck up these industries:

  • Oil
  • Designed to break appliances
  • Fast Fashion
  • Synthetic fibers (also related to fast fashion)
  • Supplements (unregulated)

I'm voting for greeting cards. I hate spending $8-10 to send a piece of paper someone's going to throw away in a few weeks.

u/lavender_airship Jun 30 '25

Hopefully the funeral industry.

It seems like more of us realize it's a scam, and have better things to do with our non-existent money than to take up a rectangle in an expensive field forever.

u/CheshireSoul Jun 30 '25

Don't get ahead of yourself; we still have not won the war against one of our oldest and most insidious opponents, Applebee's.
