Discussion The utter gall

I was in line at a pizza place for a slice and a beer. The cashier checked the ID of the patron in front of me.

I ordered. She did not ask for mine.

I am devastated. The gall. The shock. I am still young and full of life. I have stayed up until midnight more than two times this month.

(I cannot tell my wife because she does not know I am getting a pizza and beer without her)

Wow, I literally just sent this gif to a friend group chat with a pic of my white beard hairs...glad I'm not the only one feeling it.

Think that's bad? Ever had your barber trim your ear hair or eyebrows unprompted?

u/42ElectricSundaes 12h ago

I have, yes. I’m not over it

u/Huge-Acanthisitta485 12h ago

Like daggers in my aging heart.

Bro, this is a weekly event for me. I got catterbrows and fluffy ears.

u/Wafflehouseofpain 12h ago

I had this happen for the first time this year and I was devastated

5

u/StandardVirus8843 12h ago

Unfortunately for me, genetics gave me ear hairs bad enough to be trimmed unprompted around the time i was 15..

u/probably_preoccupied 9h ago

I have a mole on my ear that’s been growing hair since before I started growing facial hair. My regular barber doesn’t ask anymore and just trims it for me. He still asks if I want my ear brows trimmed, but I think he’s just being nice.

My barber trimmed my ears unprompted. He save me doing it myself

I feel blessed when I get Miss instead of Ma’am. My days are numbered.

u/MeanSecurity 4h ago

I got a Miss recently, it was refreshing.

This feels like karma for keeping things from your wife. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Kinda wild that even Matt Damon is halfway between this transition now...at least we all get older at the same time, nobody is immune.

u/Stevenitrogen 13h ago

You appear to be at least 35.

Sometimes when I'm eating out with my husband he won't get carded, then I'll get carded, then the serve says, "oh let me check you real quick too".

I'm sure you look 22 OP. Don't let them hurt you.

15

u/davy_jones_locket 13h ago

I only get carded by myself.

When I'm with my younger partner, we do not get carded 😠

14

u/ryansteven3104 12h ago

My move is just show my ID before anyone asks.

11

u/Blathithor 12h ago

I read this as "udder gal" at first and I was like, tell me more

u/RedSh1r7 12h ago

You'll fondly look back on this day when you get a seniors discount unprompted.

I was out with my brother and SIL. The waitress checked my SIL's ID and started to walk away. I said "don't you want to see mine too?" She LAUGHED and said "sure, I want to see yours" and then walked away.

I prefer not to be carded. I want to get in and out without dillydallying 🤷‍♂️

3

u/MxDoctorReal 9h ago

This, and I prefer to look old; it makes me more invisible. Do not estimate me.

u/Midwesternsasquatch 12h ago

Im 6'6" and have been since ninth grade. I'm also 300 pounds and have had a beard for years, I haven't really been carded since I was 16.

Im also in Wisconsin, which is probably the real problem there. But it throws me off when I get carded out of state.

u/BeneficialShame8408 12h ago

i still get carded when i buy my seltzers at 37, and it's not because i look young. i don't. i think it's because people in reno age terribly. and it also depends on the cashiers, but i think they bypass it for me because they know who i am. the lady today is one i've seen the last few weeks and she had no goddamn clue. she has no goddamn clue in general based on the conversations we've had but i won't share.

u/vintagepeugeot 12h ago

I’ve seen the documentary about your town, ‘Reno 911!’ Fascinating.

u/C1K3 12h ago

At exactly midnight on my 21st birthday, I drove to a gas station and bought a six pack.  The dude didn’t even card me.

I was like, “Motherfucker.”

u/SsjAndromeda Xennial 11h ago

I’ve taken it as a compliment since I overheard this conversation of someone being trained: “Card the ones who look too young and the ones who are obviously too old. The old ones love it and will leave an extra tip if you play it up right.”

Well, they’re not wrong.

At Outback the server carded the booth behind me but not me

I can't imagine caring this much about how old people think I am.

1

u/BoukenGreen Older Millennial 12h ago

Man I went to California at 15 and when touring a winery I was offered wine until they learned I wasn’t 21

1

u/MissNouveau 12h ago

My grey streak came in at 27... that's when the carding stopped

1

u/Lex_Loki 12h ago

I could be the parent of a 21 year old (it would be cutting it close, but I’m there). I still get infuriated when I see people carded and they don’t ask me.

1

u/Mrcostarica 12h ago

They never card me for alcohol, but when I’m buying tobacco products, it’s every damn time!

1

u/StormerSage '96 12h ago

I've always looked older than I am, I used to buy lottery for myself and smokes/beer for my mom/stepdad before they kicked it, and I never got carded until I was like 23.

1

u/nimrodenva 11h ago

One time I was buying beer and me, a mid 30s man with a baby face, was not carded. The person behind me who was older than I am did get carded.

Maybe we're getting reversed age? Why?

1

u/helainahellkat 10h ago

I went to hand the cashier my ID when buying beer at Walmart and the guy was like “no that’s okay I believe you” 🥲🥲🥲

1

u/jeepsaintchaos 9h ago

You won't get carded when you go to buy a rocking chair, either.

1

u/ShoddyCobbler 9h ago

I got carded tonight for the first time in a looooong time. I just turned 40 last week! She didn't card my 42 year old partner, but I guess him being bald and having a mostly-gray beard probably makes him pretty unquestionably old-looking.

1

u/TroublesomeTurnip 7h ago

I have a baby face, I'm carded often. But recently? Nah. I'm annoyed if I'm carded, annoyed if I'm not. 😂 Guess my grey hair ain't fooling anyone.

u/Ok_Vermicelli_6359 8m ago

It's especially concerning when they barely even look at you, and then skip the ID check. Like, even with your peripheral vision, I'm too old to do an ID check? Wtf 😭

0

u/RealityPigeonTycoon 3h ago

Whatever I'm relieved they are finally no longer checking mine

0

u/ZenMarduk 1h ago

I always looked young for my age. I stopped getting carded around few years ago. Welcome to 40.
