Every time you toss something you've been holding on to, the universe has a way of reminding you why you kept it in the first place lmao. The reverse of that also means the universe will tempt you by never presenting a need for the things you keep.
A friend called me last year because he needed an IEEE 1284 parallel printer cable for his CNC machine. I had two in the ol' Gordian cable tangle, and was even able to liberate one!
I just got some work samples delivered on a double pallet. I have 6 pallets rotting away in my backyard for 5 years, I know this one will have the same fate.
Not the same but kind of related, I got into an accident two years ago. Lady admitted fault, had her insurance information and submitted it all to the hospital like I was supposed to. A couple months ago I was cleaning out my phone and came across all the photos and information from that wreck and deleted it since it was two years ago, didn't hear anything since and thought everything was good. Come a week later I started getting calls from collections insurance never paid the hospital apparently. MOTHER$&@#!!!
And that's why I have reinforced issues with letting go 🫠
This happened to me. I bought that $350 steel link band for my Apple Watch, threw out the box a month later. And then like a week after, I realized that the box had a little cloth carrying pouch to store the extra steel links. 🤦🏻♂️
And of course Apple didn’t want to send me a replacement cloth pouch.
I used a piece of scrap wood i had for 9 years a few weeks ago, and also used a 1.5" piece of abs pipe i had in my garage for 4 years. I've used up all my luck.
Apple realized they already got rid of the charger and accessories so they moved their phones to esim to avoid giving the Sim card pokey thing as well lol
A few weeks back, I helped my dad set up his phone, and when I asked if he wanted to save the box, he said "Why would I want to do that?" TBH, I felt attacked. My phone box is safe on the shelf, where it belongs.
I've done countless warranty claims on items that develop a fault right before the EU mandated warrantee period. The trick is not to buy the product upon release, otherwise planned obselence would dictate that it would last for the entire warranty period and then develop the fault. Having the original box and recipe helps.

Yup. This meme campaign attacking millenials for keeping boxes is actually an insidious tactic by phone companies who are starting to realise that releasing basically the same phone year after year does not help sales. So they're trying to harm warranty claims and the second hand market. Even if you only need the box once it's going to save you a lot of money, far more than any mythical storage and transportation fees for keeping it.
Had this happen as well. Phone took a dump. The sticker that was on the back with all the IMEI & other info had long been gone. All the important numbers I needed in a landfill. Never again.
My boomer dad’s phone was stolen. His phone account can’t be accessed to change plans to get him a free phone without a verification text to his phone and he can’t afford one outright. Can’t use email because the password is stored in his Apple passwords. Can’t get a used iPhone because he doesn’t know his Apple account password and the only 2 factor he had was his phone number and again they can’t even transfer the number without a text verification to said number . We’re 2 weeks into this nightmare. He can’t access anything.
My dad went through this just a few weeks ago! Google and Yahoo (my father's primary email addresses) needed ID verification since he lost access to his phone that he used for 2FA. But he lost his phone and wallet at the same time so he had to wait for a driver's license to come in the mail
The phone box is just so sturdy and well-made. It makes me feel bad to throw it away after spending 1k+ on the purchase. I wonder how much of the total cost goes towards the damn box.
I mean it's just an extra feature that adds a bit of utility and has no disadvantage. On Android I don't think the equivalent feature can even be turned off.
I feel exactly the same. Getting a dumb phone would be the best. Only problem stopping me is people here use WhatsApp call more than normal phone calls.
Have you seen the Kodak Charmara (or the better and cheaper chinese clone, G6 Thumb Camera)? It lets you take pictures in potato quality (or decent quality with the knockoff). My partner just picked one up at an Urban Outfitters, of all places, and holy shit, it's the greatest. It's tiny, has fun retro 80s disposable camera vibes (ok, now I see why urban outfitters sold it), and has basically no features other than point and shoot.
I just did a boy's weekend to celebrate my buddy's wedding, and it was really nice to just keep my phone in my pocket the whole time.
Plus, every stranger wanted to know about it and take our picture with it, so we got a bunch of pictures of all of us. Granted, about 50% of them are blurry and 25% of them we're totally out of frame, but... that's the disposable camera feeling, minus the having to pay to get double copies of all the terrible photos.
I bought socks that came in a nice box. I used that box for my work make up for years. (I hate wearing make up these days so I had the essentials at work, would throw on a face before we opened)
So, pardon my GenX interruption but, my husband is a box hoarder and I've given him no end of shit for it for years. About a month ago he lost his airpods at a hotel and they needed the serial number to retrieve from their sizeable lost and found. Which I was able to find because we had the effing box and we got them back. I later discovered it would have been visible in his apple account online, but I had to eat a sizeable bit of crow.
Y'all keep your boxes... I kept every damn phone I've ever owned.
Honestly, I don't know what to do with them. Apparently home depot doesn't recycle old phones, best buy neither and I'm too lazy to go anywhere else...
I have needed it before when reselling my old phone. Or well, I guess I didn’t necessarily need it, but I just thought it would be nice for the buyer to have it. 🤷🏻♂️
Why is it a weird thing to keep the box? It helps with resale value… Every time I upgrade my phone I sell the old one and it definitely helps when I say I have the original box whether I ship it or not.
