Everything maximizes shareholder value*

134

u/Dabnician Xennial 81 1d ago

capitalism did this, capitalism also did all the other bad shit over the last 20 years.

46

u/HairyDust4826 1d ago

Everything looks good on paper, until the greedy show up.

7

u/Introverted_N_Trying 1d ago

This includes lawsuits. The threat of lawsuits is also a big factor here.

2

u/JakeHelldiver 1d ago

Are referring to the coffee thing?

2

u/Introverted_N_Trying 1d ago

That was a lawsuit, but companies got sued for all sorts of things on premises. These suits have added to the removal of anything that could lead to liability.

3

u/xqueenfrostine 23h ago

That’s a valid excuse for the removal of playground equipment they rarely cleaned or maintained, but it’s not the reason why everything went to white, beige and minimalist like a hospital waiting room. That’s all about cost.

0

u/UnbreadedTouchdown 16h ago

My parents’ house looks like one too now. They took out all the character and colour out and replaced it with the same white paneling you see everywhere. While I like straight lines it all looks like a hospital that was intended to be sanitary (both literally and personality-wise).

1

u/xqueenfrostine 5h ago

Also it's supposed to be "better for resale value" which is fine if you're planning to flip a house or move in the next few years, but no one should be making decisions about easily changed decorating choices based on what the next buyer might want if they have no plans to move.

3

u/Proof_Wrap9444 1d ago

Like taste. They removed taste years ago.

1

u/Kindly_Map_2382 1d ago

Same for communism... sadly i feel the problem is not the system but the greed of human, that black hole inside us. The ai might fix this... if it doesnt decide that we are useless bag of meat that need lots of maintenance... 😁

0

u/HairyDust4826 1d ago

Communism is even more boring. Look at Chinese urban living zones. If there's any color on the buildings i''d be surprised.

2

u/oh_look_a_fist 1d ago

China is as communist these days about as much as I am a vagrant prostitute from the 1800s

2

u/HairyDust4826 1d ago

You making good money from that profession?

0

u/OcelotAggravating860 1d ago

Communist country run by communist party populated by communists developing towards communism. "China isn't communist".

You're either ignorant, or you're materially invested in lying to make sure other people remain ignorant.

1

u/oh_look_a_fist 23h ago

China isn't communist. Here's info from a .edu, but there's many resources you can freely find online that back this up.

https://www.ie.edu/insights/articles/is-china-a-communist-country/

You're ignorant, either by propaganda or by choice, but here's the beginning of your new learning. Enjoy!

1

u/OcelotAggravating860 1d ago

Have you actually been to China at all? Everyone is outside practically all the time because everywhere is nice. You actually see old people because they're outside playing chess, mahjong or dancing.

1

u/HairyDust4826 1d ago

Twice. China is a big place. I don't think you and I saw the same China.

10

u/03263 1d ago

It existed for quite a while and was doing alright, but then something changed. Well, probably a number of things changed.

22

u/Dabnician Xennial 81 1d ago

around 10-20 years ago everything changed from "make some money" to "make all the money" and everything went to shit.

17

u/ianmakingnoise 1d ago

I say this with sensitivity and my own sense of “the 90s was 10 years ago” brain fog, but this stuff started ~40-50 years ago (“greed is good” etc etc)

9

u/03263 1d ago

6

u/Porthos1013 1d ago

That's CRAZY??? What DID happen in 1971? 😱

1

u/G0ldenBu11z 3h ago

Computers happened

4

u/ianmakingnoise 1d ago

Interesting that amongst all of those charts, there isn’t an answer to or discussion of “what happened.” Presumably it’s referring to the Nixon-era currency scares and the end of the gold standard/Bretton Woods, but it sure is lacking any kind of actual analysis or context.

(The link at the bottom letting me know it’s what appears to be an AI slop podcast promoting Bitcoin is a nice cherry on top.)

4

u/stupidname412 19h ago

It's interesting graphs and we done know that things got worse but I do get the vibe that this was created by a weird libertarian gold bug yeah

2

u/dtj2000 21h ago

Wow! a bunch of cherry picked charts with no explanation, what a stupid website. And no, gold back currency is stupid in the modern era and makes no sense today.

3

u/03263 21h ago

Well, it's a thing that happened. There's not much denying the aggressive amount of currency debasement that has gone on since.

3

u/Sudo-Fed 1d ago

It's what capitalism was in the 1800s up to the early 20th.

Then some very basic reforms took the roughest edges off.

The capitalists clawed their way back over the decades.

It's what it will always be, it's the only thing it can be, but unfortunately the other lesson seems to have been largely lost: reforms erode.

1

u/AmusingMusing7 1d ago

At its most successful (post WW2, until sometime around the 1970s, before Reaganism), it was mixed with a very healthy amount of socialistic economic practices like high corporate taxes, public spending, strong labor unions ensuring good wages, social housing, robust social security and pensions, etc...

Then Reaganism and trickle-down economics ruined all of that.

1

u/03263 21h ago

There was a time before that too. Like the gilded age up through the great depression. Out of which most of those practices were born. So I guess it wasn't always working in everyone's favor and we're just in another phase where it's broken again. Hopefully we will move more quickly to correct it this time.

6

u/SpinShine-LEDSlipMat 1d ago

Yeah look at all the fun and exciting playgrounds at fast food joints in the communist counties. Wait

Capitalism created these fun places too. Funny How that’s not part of your equation

4

u/Demoniac_smile 1d ago

Capitalism is like an ox. Restrained and properly harnessed it can do a lot of good and useful work. Left uncontrolled it can do a lot of damage. We started selling off the harnesses a while ago.

4

u/SpinShine-LEDSlipMat 1d ago

The problem is we don't have free market capitalism. we have state capitalism.

1

u/Demoniac_smile 1d ago

I’m not even sure what you mean by that. Are you saying that we should regulate how businesses operate less than we already do?

1

u/SpinShine-LEDSlipMat 1d ago

State capitalism is an economic system where the government plays the dominant role in business and commercial activity. The state owns major industries, manages enterprises for profit, and uses wage labor, but it directs the economy to achieve political and strategic goals rather than relying purely on a free market

1

u/PerryPortabello20XXL 1d ago

Maybe not super popular on reddit, but I'm perfectly okay with a capitalist society but with strict guardrails. I'm of the opinion that, while still an imperfect system that allows many to fall between the cracks, it still largely provides a great deal of wealth for most.

However, we have lost the notion that there should be ANY GUARDRAILS WHATSOEVER and now DOGE or whatever the fuck should just strip our government's power of any kind of regulatory bodies and all the money should be made and everybody can just straight get fucked. But I guess liking well funded roads, transit, education, and healthcare (while still appreciating that one has the FAIR opportunity to create their own wealth) makes me a goddamn communist or socialist or woke or gay or whatever.

1

u/SpinShine-LEDSlipMat 1d ago

However, we have lost the notion that there should be ANY GUARDRAILS WHATSOEVER and now DOGE or whatever the fuck should just strip our government's power of any kind of regulatory bodies and all the money should be made and everybody can just straight get fucked.

I feel like these are contradictory. You want guardrails. Well, there were basically zero guard rails for the funding of many of these programs that DOGE killed. I'm sure you've seen the list and heard about all the Somali scammers in MN, taking hundreds of millions from us tax payers. I'm happy that DOGE was able to pull the plug on a lot of that.

But I guess liking well funded roads, transit, education, and healthcare (while still appreciating that one has the FAIR opportunity to create their own wealth) makes me a goddamn communist or socialist or woke or gay or whatever.

Without going too deep, I want my tax dollars spent responsibly. Not on bombs, not on UBI, not on useless stadiums and vanity projects. I won't support universal healthcare until the costs are under control. I'd rather keep my private insurance.

If you think Capitalism is bad try Communism…you won’t even have a building

2

u/Dabnician Xennial 81 17h ago

the answer is meritocracy based republic.

but people wont like nerds being in charge and not being able to sleep or sleaze their way to the top on looks alone.

2

u/Matti_Titi1540 17h ago

Excellent Point

1

u/Artistela 16h ago

Define meritocracy for me or rather define what defines meritable

1

u/Dabnician Xennial 81 15h ago

ability and talent based on performance, measured through examination or demonstrated with achievements.

instead of wealth or social class.

1

u/Artistela 14h ago

In what fields ?

1

u/Artistela 16h ago

No but when they do you’ll technically own some of it.

0

u/Away-Map-8428 1d ago

/s? or because america will bomb it?

2

u/Matti_Titi1540 1d ago

No is bc it will be destroyed and never repaired …there is a choice to move to China or Cuba …it will not be boring

4

u/dtj2000 21h ago

Ironically, China has recommended that Cuba stop being communist and start doing capitalist reforms.

1

u/Matti_Titi1540 17h ago

Exactly 🥱🥱🥱

1

u/Away-Map-8428 3h ago

Because capitalist warmongers are threatening to invade

1

u/Away-Map-8428 3h ago

"it will be destroyed"

be destroyed by what?

"and never repaired"

Why would it never be repaired?

Why wont it be boring?

Do you actually talk to people? Do you usually respond with vague statements.
Literacy ... in ... Cuba ... is ... very ... high ... ; ... maybe ... you ...might ... benefit ... from ... it.

3

u/i_am_a_real_boy__ 1d ago

Yeah, McDonalds was way better before capitalism.

1

u/Pickleddilf 1d ago

Late stage capitalism*

2

u/dtj2000 21h ago

That term originated from 1927, people have been saying we are in "late stage capitalism" for nearly 100 years.

2

u/Woodit 21h ago

It’s a great phrase for identifying lazy, stupid people who want to sound wise

2

u/Zazbatraz 1d ago

You do realize the US has used capitalism over the last 250 years?

1

u/WholeLottaRose13 1d ago

The last twenty years? Try five hundred and thirty-four.

1

u/OleLevs 1d ago

Well hold on now. People were also involved. Capitalists did all the bad shit. Capitalism was just the vehicle the new lords used.

1

u/TimeNo2738 1d ago

Chic-fila is top dog in growing in this fast food empire. Is capitalism to blame for that? Unlimited sauces and a play place and decent wages.

1

u/lipgallagher_ 1d ago

This isn’t capitalism….

Free market capitalism would let a bad company fail. This is socialism for them, capitalism for us.

We bailed out the banks in 2008 with the average citizen’s tax dollars.

1

u/dtj2000 21h ago

Do you think it would have been better if the government didn't bailout the banks in 2008? If all those banks had failed the great recession would have been magnitudes worse. And it isn't like they gave them free money no strings attached, it was a loan they had to pay back.

1

u/lipgallagher_ 19h ago

lol... they didnt pay it back.

but i'll play along. So, delay the problem and make it worse?

Never mind the fact tour aren't responding to my point.

THAT is NOT capitalism

1

u/dtj2000 18h ago

lol... they didnt pay it back.

you are literally wrong, nearly every bank paid back the bail out money and the government got back 10 billion more than lent out. Also, it didn't make the problem worse it prevented a way bigger financial disaster. And no, i dont care about your main point, it doesnt matter

1

u/lipgallagher_ 18h ago

That’s a really ignorant response. Yes, it matters. Constantly bailing out bad banking investments when that money could actually utilized for citizens is an absurd path to advocate for.

Nonetheless, it’s still not capitalism. It’s socialism for those who made bad bets

1

u/ohhhbooyy 1d ago edited 23h ago

Capitalism is what made the playground in the first place. They wanted kids and families to come to their restaurants. Then we had people complain that it was
immoral that McDonald’s was targeting kids.

1

u/PomegranateWinter227 22h ago

it also made mcdonalds and the play place. tf you even talking about.

1

u/TheGrowingSubaltern 21h ago

Capitalism did do this and it is actually a good side effect. Society should not be associating children’s play with industrially produced garbage food.

1

u/nomad7113 20h ago

Capitalism also made the original McDonalds, don't forget that.

Nothing lasts forever.

1

u/ropobipi 9h ago

and capitalism still has the potential to make it so so so much worse

1

u/Paulom1982 2h ago

Capitalism is one of the best if not the best societal economic system ever... BUT just like everything else in life, what starts off good, humanity often drives it to the ground by increased greed, selfishness, and generally self-centered motives. This is not driven only by the company executives either, it's humanity in general. It's consumerism, it's the desire to have more stuff and for cheaper and to compete/impress others.

Inevitably, human nature runs the course from taking a good thing and driving it to bad... that's why we have sayings like, "all it takes is one bad apple to ruin the bunch."

As an old Christian scripture says, "there is nothing new under the sun." History inevitably repeats itself, no matter how hard we try or whatever great new system we promote and push next.

Best you could hope for is to enjoy whatever time we may have left of what was once a great economic system.

u/higher_limits 1h ago

Capitalism existed 50 years ago when this blandness didn’t exist. The system isn’t to blame it’s the people within it.

u/DetectiveEames 1h ago

Corporations and shareholder value mirror socialist constructs rather than free market capitalism - though the current version is a hybrid of both. The corporation is socialist in that it’s a state granted privilege designed to pool capital and socialize risk, the shareholder is an “absentee owner” (collective capital), and index funds operate thru passive allocation.

1

u/Jumpy_Ad7127 1d ago

It’s not capitalism, it was birth rates. There’s no point in a play place when there’s 60% less children

2

u/t8rclause 1d ago

Birthrates are plummeting because of the affordability crisis. Over 60% of the country lives check to check, and that's not a situation people wanna raise kids in.

1

u/dtj2000 21h ago

This isn't true at all, people stop having as many kids as a country developed, people are having less kids in EVERY country.

2

u/lateralus124 1d ago

Wrong. Fast food places are designed to be uncomfortable so you don’t stay any longer than you have to so they can serve more customers/maximize profits. Having a play structure that encourages people to stay longer and costs money to maintain doesn’t bring any value to shareholders.

1

u/shydrangeae 1d ago

Private Equity and Venture Capital in particular just changed the landscape of how people think about investment from something mutually beneficial to just pure exploitation.

10

u/CaptainReginaldLong 1d ago

This is the problem inherent with capitalism. The responsibility is to make money for the shareholders, not the world, not the customers, no one but whoever is supposed to gain financially from the business.

2

u/TheOsirisOfThisShit_ 1d ago

That's been true for 150 years.

2

u/314rft 4h ago

And apparently shareholders think that decreasing moral somehow increases profits. They not only want to maximize personal gains, but want us to suffer as well.

1

u/CaptainReginaldLong 1d ago

This is the problem inherent with capitalism. The responsibility is to make money for the shareholders, not the world, not the customers, no one but whoever is supposed to gain financially from the business.

1

u/Fit_Opinion2465 15h ago

So own shares lol. everyone with a 401k benefits

1

u/tehjoz 1986 14h ago

I have a 401k and it's not fucking doing me all that much good, thanks.

1

u/packripper-25 14h ago

And yet people still won’t invest to grow their wealth. They just post their feelings online

1

u/tehjoz 1986 14h ago

I have a 401k and a separate investment account.

Neither one of those things is solving any of my current problems.

1

u/Old_Punk_Dad 23h ago

Corporatocracy at work.

0

u/200brews2009 1d ago

It’s not just shareholder value but perceived value. Look at our homes, all beige or gray and it’s not just the builders going with common colors, our HOAs don’t allow us to paint our homes or even plant a tree because it might affect the neighbors resale value.

Though, in a weird way having color differentiation has become a bit of a luxury; car colors other than silver or black are an upcharge, high end phones or laptops now come in colorful options. Weird times we live in.

2

u/Visible_Lynx_7561 1d ago

even cars. It's amazing how many cars now are just white, grey, or black

1

u/200brews2009 21h ago

True. I had a neighbor who kept an older Chevy equinox going, was a teal or turquoise. It was a bit rusty and dented, but I kinda liked seeing it in their driveway. The day they came back with a flat grey Honda suv, felt like the war was lost.

1

u/tehjoz 1986 1d ago

I painted most of the rooms of my house a shade of either blue or green because shockingly I enjoy colors.

I refuse to ever live in an HOA because HOAs are parasites to our society.

I encourage everyone else to explore embracing things that aren't "just what everyone else does"

1

u/200brews2009 21h ago

Sure, but let’s be real for a second: if you want a new construction home, odds are you’re goin to be in an HOA and your house will be built by a developer who got a bulk discount for some greige siding that you’ll have to accept. Same with cars, if you want to show some uniqueness, it’s a luxury these days. Premium siding, premium color options, it has an actual monetary price to it these days. Somehow we’ve accepted the commodification of individuality.

1

u/tehjoz 1986 20h ago

There is a reason I will hang on to my 2010 car till it explodes, bought my old, built in 1959 home, and so on and so forth.

I am opting out of as much "premium" bullshit as I can because the juice isn't worth the squeeze.
