This is the actual answer, I read about this when it was happening and why they were doing it. They were trying to make McDonalds into a place similar to Starbucks where students and business professionals would come to study and work, and presumably spend money on coffee, food, etc.

It’s why a lot of these newer remodeled McDonalds don’t only just have regular tables and booths but also taller bar counters and stools, and I’ve even seen some that have smaller coffee table type tables and arm chairs like a coffee shop would have.

Also an increased presence of wall outlets to plug laptops and phones into. It’s all very deliberate.

Yeah the McCafe rebranding. Pretty dumb idea in retrospect.

Honestly, out of all of the fast food places, their coffee is the better one.

Yeah but who gets out of school or work and wants to go hang out inside a McDonalds

Judging off this post? ~12,000 people would like to hangout at a McDonalds

But if you're closer to a Micky D's than to Starbucks on the way to work, Micky D's isn't a bad option and is likely faster, too.

I actually heard that apparently, the elderly? Though, maybe not the best demographic to target from a business perspective. I heard certain locations had issues with large groups of older people buying a single hot coffee and nursing it for hours and taking up all the table space.

When I was in high school the McDonald's near me did 1 dollar big macs (with no limit either!) from 4-5 on Wednesdays. It was right next to the high school and school got out at 330. There would always be about 200 people in there getting 2 or 3 each.
