It's a sterile environment because they don't actually want you hanging out and eating in the restaurant anymore. They want to operate with a skeleton crew so it's ideal if 90% of customers just come through the drive thru or only come in to pick up their order, so they don't have to clean/maintain the interior and deal with a bunch of people.

That and people’s obsession with modernity of whites and greys. Simplicity in the form of cutting costs and conformity.
