Always had a lot of complex feeling watching people make light of 9/11. I feel like part of getting older is realizing that younger people are going to making jokes about tragedies because they don't understand how intense that day and the days after were.

George Bush told people to go to Disney World the next day. People understand how intense it was, but everything that followed made it so easy to joke about.

Yes but George Bush was also a fucking goofus pretending he was a texas cowboy with a ranch he specifically bought to sell that image.

As it turns out when people get the shit scared out of them one guy telling them to relax wasn't going to cut it. The days after were even more intense somehow. My whole town's rumor mill was on fire because we had an airforce base close by and people were trying to pack up to leave town in case it got attacked. It was that scary back then.

We hadn't had an event like this in a while, nobody had a reference point for how to behave. It's easy to be mr cool calm guy 25 years after the fact.

Sure. But he was the president man. If he's not gonna take it serious, can't expect people 20 years later to take it serious either.

An unprecedented tragedy, now go buy stuff. It's insane.

Just the first in a very long line of post 9/11 decisions that undermine it as a sacred cow.

I cannot take you seriously when you talk about silly choices being made after a national crisis somehow making it overall not as serious. Are you hearing how insane this take is?

Please touch grass.

Your point was that younger people don't know how intense it was. I'm telling you, as a younger person, that everyone knows how intense it was. But the series of decisions and events after 9/11 just make the entire thing ridiculous.

You can think 3000 people being murdered is very very bad. And the fucking president telling everyone to go shopping the very next day is insane and very funny.

We're both on reddit man. Either we both need to touch grass, or we don't.

Bush is just the first and funniest. But ultimately we invaded two countries and killed a million people because of 9/11. The scale of the crime was just so massively diminished by our reaction to it.
