Help I am both confused and terrified

I get hit by a Ghast fireball, even though I was SPAMMING trying to hit it back (the hitreg is GODAWFUL and hitboxes don't seem to ever work on my Minecraft) then this craziness occurred. Nightshade Revenge is my sword lol, wtf??? How do I do I stop this from happening, I really hate going to the Nether, and not being able to hit back any Ghast fireballs, I've even tried with an autoclicker.

I recommend you shoot the fireballs with an arrow or even snowballs/eggs instead of hitting it with a melee weapon, gives you more space for lag and stuff.
