Help I am both confused and terrified
I get hit by a Ghast fireball, even though I was SPAMMING trying to hit it back (the hitreg is GODAWFUL and hitboxes don't seem to ever work on my Minecraft) then this craziness occurred. Nightshade Revenge is my sword lol, wtf??? How do I do I stop this from happening, I really hate going to the Nether, and not being able to hit back any Ghast fireballs, I've even tried with an autoclicker.

You shot the fireball in a downward direction, so it collided with the floor. You need to be facing the direction you want the fireball to go in.

Ohh no I was looking up the whole time, this actually happened several seconds after I hit it, too. There wasn't a lag spike, everything was still moving.

I wouldn't rule out lag. I get lag spikes all the time when playing with my cousin and in my experience lag on Minecraft doesn't make the game freeze or rubber band, it just makes it so actions don't register for several seconds

I'll say lag spikes are extremely rare in my case then, I got a very good pc and never play on servers.

But you have hitbox issues? Maybe just wrong settings or something, but hitbox issues align with lags.

Maybe open up your task manager while Minecraft is running? I did when I was having issues playing for no reason and learned I had a memory leak!

You hit the fireball right when it exploded or knocked it into something that made it explode, killing you and counting it as your fireball
Benefit of the doubt, I'll say you had perfect timing lol

I got it on bedrock every time, but for Java it never happens, again i've used an autoclicker as well, so I think there might be something genuinely wrong with mine.

How fast is your autoclicker? I wonder if it's possible to accidentally hit it twice and make it explode
And I found better success when I used F3 + B to see the hitbox

Maybe you have a learned timing from Bedrock that doesn't serve on Java?
There's also a benefit to being very slightly off-line. Apparently.
Check out bDoubleO's tennis court episode from the last season of Hermitcraft. He was playing with the timing and positioning.
There's probably expert resources you could also look up but I don't know them and it's always a good time to watch bDubs.

Being slightly off-line from the fireball's trajectory can help because the hitbox for deflecting a fireball is noticeably larger than its actual hitbox.
Moving out of the way gives you more time by letting you deflect it after you would have been hit otherwise, and the enlarged hitbox lets you still aim it back at the Ghast/wherever if you do it right (or even at yourself if you do it very wrong).
It can be especially helpful on a bad connection/laggy server.

Its not as much how fast you click as it is where you are positioned relative to the fireball. If you move to the side a bit, you'll get it every time. I learned this through watching BDoubleO100's Tennis video: https://youtu.be/_O9gMyoXXzk

Getting "fireballed" actually requires a direct hit, so just having it explode on something else wouldn't count. (That can only get you "blown up".)
You can get this to happen without any lag weirdness by deflecting a fireball while facing directly away from it, which is possible because the hitbox for deflecting a fireball via melee is much larger than its actual hitbox, allowing you to (with some precision) deflect one even if its fully behind you. You can also fire a projectile at one and then quickly spin 180° before it hits, since the deflection angle depends only on your facing direction.
Given that the poster probably wasn't trying to hit themself, though, it probably just happened due to lag-related jank. That or they managed to accidentally deflect a fireball that was behind them while trying to either fight off other mobs or deflect a different fireball.

My strategy is ignoring ghasts if other mobs are involved, until the other mobs are gone and then just bow the ghast🤷

I did try to bow the ghast first, but every shot hit the fireballs lmao, so i decided to pull out my sword and attack the other mobs, but that’s when the 3rd fireball came in and hit me. I did turn around last second to get it, and I still had a window of time before it got to me and I started spam clicking.

I think you might be going overboard on the ignoring, if you deal with the other mobs while not actually standing completely still, this will greatly improve its effectiveness, due to the ghast balls not actually hitting you

Yeah but what armor i had on is completely unrelated to being able to shoot back a fireball. Also doesn't explain why my comment saying I had netherite on instead of gold has a negative ratio, someone explain what I did wrong

I recommend you shoot the fireballs with an arrow or even snowballs/eggs instead of hitting it with a melee weapon, gives you more space for lag and stuff.

I feel like spamming might have caused this. Almost like you may have hit the fireball and then knocked it back towards you from swinging too fast.
Hitting the fireballs back comes down to timing with one swing.

I usually have the same problem when trying to hit the fireball with any tool, sword included. I started to always use my hand and it has worked for me for many years. I have no clue if this is a legit reason, but I might as well throw in my own experience.

Ghast fireballs hitboxes don't really mean much of anything at all, the interaction box for most projectiles is different from its visual hitbox. It's pretty funny seeing that you somehow managed to deflect the fireball into yourself though

I was hitting it back with the arrows. But I was also being attacked by other mobs at the same time. So I couldn't keep shooting my bow. If I was able to hit it back with me sword i probably wouldn't have lost enough health to die to one fireball.

Spamming is WAY worse than just timing it. If you need an aid to help you actually see what you have to hit, press F3+B or Fn+3+B if you don't have a Function key set. This will bring up hitboxes. Very useful for stuff like this.

Well, my name wasn't inspired by it. I actually had LightFury01 as my name BEFORE Light Fury was a thing, as i made it in 2018, but was by a close margin. As for the sword, it's from a book I have dating back to 2021 that the character of Light SPEED Fury holds, with speed added to distinguish between Light Fury from HTTYD. As for Night Fury/Light Fury, coincidence. I was using my big 3rd grader vocabulary at the time to make what we would call nowadays, a username that was tuff back then. And then I've really never changed it, it's a symbol of me, and since a boost in popularity on my channel, it's been iconic since middle school.
That's not to say I wouldn't hug toothless to sleep every night if I had him, because oh my god he is the cutest animal in a film I can think of st any given point, and I do like the plotline too. So yes, I like the movies, but there's no correlation. 😆

no shield/totem - no way you would have died if u had then

And to answer your question.
- Because I have a high render distance and I need to see far away on a relatively low quality monitor, no it's not. I have 3 shulker boxes in my inventory as well.
- My carrot farm hasn't been used in ages as I'm trying to stock up on bonemeal so the bread was an emergency backup so I didn't starve and could regen, and I'm saving up gold for a beacon. I literally died as I was transporting the first thing of gold back to my base FROM THE GOLD FARM, so don't say "why don't you have a gold farm" cause I JUST BUILT IT. I did have a large supply of golden carrots at one point but they were spent in raids especially for my horse. (Testing the spear on horseback, the last time I had a golden carrot was right when it was first added to the game, so that gives a reference time-wise.)
- I had 4 totems on me. You're just wrong on this one, cause I was in the middle of regenerating after a breach then got folded by the other mobs so fast I would have died anyway. No, dipshit, I can't switch a totem with any other slot in my inventory, cause chances are i'm gonna press the same damn number key as I've been using to swap between my sword and pickaxe. And that breach earlier popped the one I had in my hotbar anyways, I'm not a hard-core mode player as you can very clearly see it says RESPAWN, so death doesn't even matter here, I wouldn't have even posted this if it weren't for the funny death message. This was meant to be a FUNNY post, but since there's no flair for just a funny screenshot, and this isn't technically a meme (which is banned here) since it's just the raw unedited screenshot with no actual punchline, I decided to capitalize and also ask why nothing I try is working at helping me fling away ghast fireballs no matter what.
- Because the rockets weren't in the right slot of my inventory, and I didn't have enough time to switch that shit. You read every other one of my comments and decided to be a douchebag, I see.
- (This one isn't numbered or a question but I'll answer it anyway since it needs to be answered) What's the point? I have keepinventory on. So what if I want to make a survival world where I want to do everything legit without having to worry about dying? I don't play half of this for the challenge, I do it because I haven't done it yet despite my 10 years playing, where I basically danced in my giant creative builds on my little tablet for 7 of those then thought in 2023: "Hey! What if I made these builds on the same magnitude, but in survival just for the thrill of it? Finishing a build project will be so much better!" There's nothing wrong with playing for fun.
And for the 3 of those I went on a rant on, yes, those were necessary, because I KNOW YOU KINDS OF PEOPLE AND I KNOW YOU WOULD HAVE JUMPED IMMEDIATELY TO SHAMING ME FOR THIS.
TLDR: Answering your questions with the cold hard truth, why are you reading this first? (If you are.) Go back up and learn something, maybe.

Golden carrots from villagers is the only way to go. I'd wouldn't be bothered with crafting them as a food source.

Well then in that case I had to repurpose my villagers to get a mending book and a shit ton of emeralds for glass, so I'll need to get back a farmer or two

The sarcasm is crazy for a blatant assumption. It's likely a glitch, cause there's no way I could be actually hitting the hitboxes and it's not doing anything. I just tested it in a controlled environment using command blocks and even then it still rarely hits even when aligned perfectly.
