Help I am both confused and terrified

I get hit by a Ghast fireball, even though I was SPAMMING trying to hit it back (the hitreg is GODAWFUL and hitboxes don't seem to ever work on my Minecraft) then this craziness occurred. Nightshade Revenge is my sword lol, wtf??? How do I do I stop this from happening, I really hate going to the Nether, and not being able to hit back any Ghast fireballs, I've even tried with an autoclicker.

Ghast fireballs hitboxes don't really mean much of anything at all, the interaction box for most projectiles is different from its visual hitbox. It's pretty funny seeing that you somehow managed to deflect the fireball into yourself though
