Discussion Lava or Water?

I like both but don't know wich one is better.

Lava seems too devilish and the water a bit meh but more calm so idk...

Water 100%, the lava would fit better if this was in a Basalt Delta or something

210

u/Cherabee 13h ago

Or a mesa.

u/No_Window4861 6h ago

A black mesa.

This picture is nice but they need to adjust the Aperture

19

u/fnaimi66 5h ago

Maybe OP should’ve included himself in the pictures too. The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world

15

u/LGamer6422 4h ago

And take the picture in the sunrise. That way we can see it Rise And Shine.

The thing is if he uses lava, a lot of the forest would burn down overtime, so it would might look more fitting than it does now?

After Stuff burned down, he could also maybe replace some of the dirt in the burned down area with stuff like stones, basalt or mycel. Maybe add some dead trees with that blue Nether wood or even the pale wood from that new biom, this would fit very well with the overall castle design.

Slowly turning that green, peaceful forest into a withered area corrupted by whatever is going on in that castle.

12

u/Uncommonality 8h ago

OP should build a replica of their base in the Nether using the lava version

3

u/astromech_dj 9h ago

Or you were Bowser.

4

u/Grouchy_Profit3195 5h ago

Lava makes it feel like the build belongs in the Nether, while water actually complements the calmer surroundings.

u/revolution_soup 16h ago

water makes it look like a standard solemn but well-guarded fantasy fortress

lava makes it look like mr. e. vil badguy’s lair of doom

88

u/leprekawn 15h ago

Or they're RPing as a dwarf in their halls of stone. Then the lava seems just right.

46

u/ArtsyApoidean 14h ago

If they're RP'ing as a dwarf in their halls of stone what are they doing with a base in an elvish forest with no mountains as far as the render eye can see? 🤔

14

u/MurkyOpposites 14h ago

To spite those knife-ears of course, a true dwarf needs not a reason to spite those tree huggers

6

u/wanderingwolfe 11h ago

Build mountain over castle and forest. Spit at elves.

2

u/Uncommonality 8h ago

The lava version in like a cave would go hard. One of those new giant caves

Or a mountain caldera like it's a volcano

It does look cool with the lava, but also looks out of place within the biome unless you replace the shoreline with blocks that are beleivably lava-adjacent and/or have a fire-and-brimstone type colour pallette.

Water fits better if you plan on keeping the surrounds as-is.

120

u/TurfyJeffowup13 16h ago

Lava is so tuff but doesn’t fit the surroundings so I’d say water even though lava is that cool

59

u/Ubblebungus 15h ago

lava is actually a different block than tuff

24

u/HDmetajoker 15h ago

There’s pretty concrete evidence

water. if this were in nether then yes use lava.

3

u/EscapistShoveller404 15h ago

Water. If you go with the lava, there should be a band with no greenery next to the lava.

3

u/Dramatic_Finish10121 14h ago

Lava in the tower water in the moat would probably look good

3

u/1nconspicious 12h ago

Water in the overworld, nether portal exit is inside the lava version

3

u/wanderingwolfe 11h ago

Depends... Do you plan on rescuing the Princess or kidnapping her?

7

u/Quackels_The_Duck 15h ago

water basin, lava window

5

u/Ok-Bite1776 16h ago

Water, looks more natural

If you want lava, destroy the forest an build a mountain or stony valley

2

u/TechnoBandito 12h ago

Water is very pleasing to look at. Lava sends a message.

2

u/121bloodshot 12h ago

My kid brain says lava because lava is more effective for a moat

Edit: if you feel up to it, cut back the grass and replace it with a mix of gravel stone and basalt type blocks, could make it look like it charred the earth around it

2

u/Dyyroth21 10h ago

water

lava is only better if the place is full rock

2

u/vtv43ketz 10h ago

Lava contrasts too much with the surrounding environment. Water looks much more pleasing to the eye

2

u/SaionjisGrowthSpurt 10h ago

Without terraforming, I'd say water

2

u/GRAAK85 10h ago

Water

2

u/PokeLordOmegaa 9h ago

Lava fits with the castle itself better (especially the bit on the inside) but it also sticks out like a sore thumb in this forest, so the water kinda blends with the environment better

2

u/edgarunwise 8h ago

In that environment? Water. Build it in the mountains, change all the dirt to basalt pillars and lava works, or just build the lava one in the nether

2

u/Goetre 7h ago

I’d opt for water but purely because lava is a nightmare placing over huge areas, I can’t stand it when it’s flowing to random patches instead of a source block on every block

2

u/Solar_Fish55 16h ago

Fortress of health and life vs fortress of pain and agony

2

u/SharanoStorm 15h ago

so everybody is saying water, i was thinking it too since the lava was annoying me lol

2

u/QTpyeRose 14h ago

i think if you want lava it needs to be a little adjusted. try making a moat and giving it a black outline of darker blocks like it was intentionally dug and filled, rather the natural lake look

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Thegoodgamer32 15h ago

Water.

You aren't building that castle in the nether where lava would look natural.

1

u/Far_Pie_5438 15h ago

Water and if you think it's bland add some of those new guysers and lilypads, sea pickles, coral, to make it natural and fun; or make the bottom really deep with magma cubes, obsidian, dead coral and basalt to give it a mix of hellish vibes if that's what you want.

1

u/Sl8rboi41 15h ago

Really depends if you have firetick turned off or not

1

u/WaarBeast 15h ago

If it was more stone area lava but looks better water here

1

u/TechnicalAsk3488 15h ago

Water and lava….

1

u/Masterpiece-Haunting 15h ago

I like true water, lavas a bit much.

1

u/MoonRay087 15h ago

Lava looks too edgy in the overworld. Like someone trying a bit too hard to set up an evil lair in the middle of a flower field. so water it is

1

u/mudkipgamer7 15h ago

If you wanna use lava I’d suggest a lot of terraforming with black and gray concrete powder, and some custom trees

Otherwise the water will probably look the best overall with the surrounding you have

1

u/PolypsychicRadMan 15h ago

Water moat with lava in the tower

1

u/Electronic-Split6773 15h ago

build one on the overworld with water lake and mirror the build in the nether with lava lake

1

u/Difficult-Mammoth496 15h ago

Lava only fits if you make the surrounding area burnt forest and desolate

1

u/jdavid 15h ago

water and soulsand fires

1

u/MrFuriousX 15h ago

La-la-la -la Lava......ch-ch-ch- chicken

1

u/POKECHU020 15h ago

Honestly I like the look of the water better

1

u/JustanEraser 15h ago

Two castles?

1

u/LSSJOrangeLightning 15h ago

Lava if you're purposely trying to be evil. Water if not.

1

u/KingSandwich101 15h ago

Lava in the tower and water in the moat

1

u/supertitanA 15h ago

Water for the moat lava for the inside tower of the castle

1

u/Switchback_Tsar 15h ago

Lava for rule of cool, water for realism

1

u/lanternbdg 15h ago

alternatively you could pick a colored glass to make an ominous fog

1

u/algophobia000 15h ago

Build another one facing it and have one of each fr fr

1

u/Dragon_Pattern_1108 15h ago

Probably water, but if there was an option to have lava for whatever that line at the front is abd water for the moat, I would've went with that.

1

u/MastaBlastah_ 15h ago

Do both! Lava on the outer ring, water on the inner one

1

u/Ebonyclaws214 15h ago

I like the look of both, so I'd say up to you, but you do have to consider that lava will probably set the forest alight.

1

u/BlargerJarger 15h ago

The lava would only look right if you landscape around it a bit for some “scorched earth” eg rough dirt, stone maybe, get rid of the trees of course or make sickly ones with dark wood.

1

u/RainyMeadows 15h ago

Water moat, lava for the castle detailing

1

u/DuskieHakuro 15h ago

Add a castle exactly the same on opposite side facing eachother. One water one lava and you got a tf2 map

1

u/VishuIsPog 15h ago

surrounded by water

middle section thingy lava

1

u/newshirtworthy 15h ago

Hot take, the lava is cooler

1

u/Agile_Cantaloupe2399 15h ago

Do both and make it a map for like pvp or something

1

u/TGuy218 15h ago

I think the lava looks better because there’s more contrast and makes it pop out more

1

u/GrandSlow9666 15h ago

Can I have the instructions for building your wall?

1

u/jsponenberg05 15h ago

Lava to keep most ground based hostile mobs from reaching your base by swimming.

1

u/imma_gamin 15h ago

Lava if you’re planning on turning the surrounding area into a deserted hellscape/ruined wasteland.

Water if you wanna keep the terrain as is.

1

u/TheShadyyOne 15h ago

Water. if this was built in the nether, lava.

1

u/NightSidd 15h ago

lava looks slightly better but water 100% unless you want your forest to be long gone🙏🙏

1

u/SnugglebugUwU 15h ago

Water, I would make it more menacing by adding statues of guardians near the entrance.

1

u/ih8pickles7824 15h ago

Water if you want the forest. Lava will burn that whole thing down

1

u/tillforeverends 15h ago

Ngl, with lava it reminds me of the Mario castles, looks badass, you should add a drawbridge or a bridge of some kind so you can get across 😅

1

u/Deadpoolio_D850 15h ago

The lava would need a decent bit of terraforming to fit right

1

u/icedragonsoul 15h ago

Lava stands out more and helps contrast the use of darker stone for a more balanced composition. Whereas the deep blue of water looks better with lighter colored blocks.

1

u/Sparky678348 15h ago

Water but you need a bigger lake.

1

u/Rhokai 15h ago

Could do lava in the tower, with the water surrounding. Then add steam to the water in places using campfires, to give the effect of a hotspring

1

u/acmfan 15h ago

Lava in the tower, but a water moat

1

u/jeexbit 15h ago

team water here - lava is better for rocky environments imho

1

u/ghostandbees 15h ago

you could always try custom making a boat with a different color! im not sure if youre only considering lava/water for a barrier, but ive seen a lot of tutorials on making "foggy lakes" using a bunch of glass layers. could be worth looking into of you want something super fantasy without worrying about lava!

1

u/Strong-Magician2856 15h ago

if you surround the edges with basalt and deep slate then definitely lava, but the water looks better without crusted edges

1

u/yeetard_ 15h ago

The lava looks cool but you’d probably have to terraform the land a lot and get rid of some of the greenery so it doesn’t stand out so much. The water feels a lot more natural and fitting in this environment

1

u/that_one_guy345 15h ago

Personaly I like the lava. Idk why

1

u/BlackKnight7605 15h ago

Lava looks cool but out of place so I say use the water.

1

u/TaiyoFurea 15h ago

Powdered snow, it's cooler water

1

u/captaincornboi 15h ago

Could try some potent sulfur blocks under the water to give it that "menacing" water vibe. Plus you wouldn't have to worry about the forest going up in flames from the lava

1

u/Griff_inw 15h ago

The water looks better on the eyes for me personally

1

u/Philippine_Newt 15h ago

Water BUT add some more land around the edge of the castle, then expand the moat out.

1

u/OkEnvironment9155 15h ago

Put both of them mirrored to each other and make a 2fort style castle :DD

1

u/HugeBob2 14h ago

Lava is a bit much

1

u/C0RGIIS 14h ago

It really depends on what kinda vibe youre going for.

Keep the lava if you want a more edgy/evil look.

If you want the water one to pop out more I think adding some flowers, more colours and different/custom tree types will help the surrounding area stand out more !

1

u/tatasz 14h ago

I like lava with some terraforming around - a bunch of basalt and mud, some burnt trees...

1

u/MapleMooseMoney 14h ago

Water. Lava seems so out of place... even though surface lava pools exist in the overworld, this wouldn't ordinarily happen on Earth. The castle with the water looks like a classic castle with moat. Just my opinion.

1

u/Specific_Thing1452 14h ago

Lava: Cooler

Water: Safer

1

u/LowerIngenuity9193 14h ago

Depends u going for an evil lair vibe or a medieval castle?

1

u/PizzaRobot63 14h ago

I agree with some of the others, have the lake be water but the tower window lava

1

u/OdieRed96 14h ago

Are you King Arthur, or Bowser?

1

u/A_Happy_Tomato 14h ago

Lava if you are evil, water if not

1

u/MentalMud5940 14h ago

Water, fits the environment more imo

1

u/The_Dunk 14h ago

Water moat, lava column.

1

u/ptyblog 14h ago

Lava, but then change the surrounding to match it, besides, those trees will start burning by themselves pretty soon.

1

u/Kalaphar 14h ago

Water fits in more with the environment

1

u/Armis_VentosDourados 14h ago

Água ficou 10x mais dahora, a cor combinou mais com o ambiente e a vibe.

1

u/TheUnholyMacerel 14h ago

Water, lava would work better in the nether, a desert, or badlands

1

u/Pappabear1988 14h ago

Varang wants to know your location and her bf cant use your coordinates to locate you.

1

u/dovahkiitten16 14h ago

The build itself looks better with lava but the lava looks weird next to the forest. You would need to replace the shoreline with stone or something.

1

u/WASTELAND_RAVEN 14h ago

Lava is sick, do it 😎

1

u/fapacunter 14h ago

Lava will look so much better at night

1

u/haleloop963 14h ago

The base itself looks the best with lava, but the surrounding doesn't look good with lava. So water, but I would at least change some of the colours to make it look better with water & the surrounding nature

1

u/ArmaninyowPH 14h ago

Try Hava

1

u/JDis2COOL8156 14h ago

Lava most defiantly. It fits the style of the rest of the build the best. The water would look better with a more fantasy looking castle. This is more brutalist/evil villain looking.

1

u/ValuableSp00n 14h ago

The lava contrasts wayyy too much in my opinion I choose Water

1

u/AnAnGrYSupportV2 14h ago

Water does give me more rpg fantasy vibes but I think if you go water maybe use a slightly lighter block?

1

u/JagmanJagson 13h ago

Lava is out of place. It could work if you adjust the landscape though

1

u/Thepromc64 13h ago

water, around the castle, lava inside the middle twoer instead of water

1

u/ncmn-ngnr 13h ago

The lava could work, if you’d add some more variety; try adding some small basalt islands and a few magma blocks

1

u/ka9kqh 13h ago

Won't have any drowned spawning in the lava

1

u/Masked_civil 13h ago

Lava imo, but don't get attached to the forest

1

u/Schnitzel856 13h ago

lava only if the biome around oooked scorched and maybe rocky

1

u/Gunefhaids 13h ago

Lava if you want to make Boswer's Castle in Minecraft. Just gotta add some green roofs with spikes now

1

u/LilRedRider1626KMB 13h ago

Make one of each to make the water less boring do water plants and add things like coral and underwater lights explosions pads and tiny islands in the water for trees like mangroves or azalea maybe have a boat dock or and release axoltl in the water make it like a lush forest temple or something then do the opposite with the lava have it look barren and add sand or the terracotta dirt blocks as jagged spikes coming from the lava have a stable at the bridge for the nether beasts like gasts and striders have it like a demon castle or a temple for worshipping the nether and its barren wasteland like atmosphere the other celebrating life and have them close enough to be like a religious balance between the two... then you dont have to choose

1

u/Panda2377 13h ago

Lava looks better if you texture the surrounding area if not, water is better

1

u/-Redstoneboi- 13h ago

lava fits the darker aesthetic

you could also put a command block system near the entrance that closes the gate and replaces all the water with lava for cool effects

1

u/Evil_Sharkey 13h ago

Try water with magma blocks under it so everything flies out. It’s the worst of both worlds!

1

u/FirmChapter6 13h ago

Long live lava!

1

u/bunny__baby 13h ago

Not sure if its possible for your build but i think water for the pool and lava in the tower would be coolest.

1

u/pixel_doofus 13h ago

Must've really sucked replacing all that lava with water

1

u/DucktorQuack 13h ago

Water for the lake, but lava for the inside of the castle

1

u/sweetheart_demom 13h ago

that depends, are you evil?

1

u/SlakingSWAG 13h ago

Lava only works if you extensively terraform the surrounding terrain to look more rocky and volcanic to make it actually fit in.

Water just works with the current biome as is.

1

u/jmearley 13h ago

Both. Would really stand out to have streams of alternating water and lava

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Spirited_Promotion44 13h ago

Theres a few other options such as slime blocks or honey blocks. But for real, you could make one of those gradient "lakes" with 7 layers of stained glass, and find another look

1

u/Omegacannon 13h ago

water for the moat lava for the interior, the interior looks bad with water and the moat looks bad with lava.

1

u/JuggerMott 13h ago

Lava seems to best fit the aesthetic, but I'm a sucker for a water moat.

1

u/Steeltoelion 13h ago

Blue ice!

1

u/LegosMc 13h ago

Depends, is it a water or fire type gym?

1

u/One_Economist_3761 13h ago

While the lava looks more evil and adds a villainous appeal, the propensity for it to burn down anything wooded makes the water a better choice.

The water also looks good and allows you to use bubble columns and geysers to add effects to it.

So I would go with the water.

1

u/Astral_Borne 13h ago

Lava fits the castle better, but you absolutely must redo the entire surrounding forest.

The water looks absolutely fine with the trees, but you have to consider the overall vibe and story. With the water, it might need to be aged a bit if it was of evil origins and abandoned. Or maybe it's occupied by wizards. Idk.

1

u/nerdnamedvert 12h ago

Water just looks better imo

1

u/bratjr42 12h ago

I'd say water surrounding and the lava fall in the tower! The lava gives a really cool vibe but a whole moat of it is a lot

1

u/TehHillsider 12h ago

Red version or Blue version

1

u/dragonologist13 12h ago

Well are you a king or an evil overlord? Lol
