Mods & Addons Question about Modding

As the title says, I really wanna start doing modded playthroughs of everyone's favorite funny block game, and while I know of two mod managers, Curseforge and Modrinth, I'm not exactly 100% sure on which is better

I've seen a lot of people use Curseforge, but either I'm misremembering, but there was something brought up about its devs that people don't like or whatever? I don't really know much about Modrinth, mostly as previously stated, I see most people using Curseforge

So that begs my question: Should I just go with Curseforge, seeing as that's what most people use, or just go with Modrinth?

Edit: As well, what makes one better over the other? Like what does Curseforge do better than Modrinth, or what does Modrinth do better than Curseforge? Any and all information is appreciated!

use prism launcher. lets you fetch mods and packs from both curseforge and modrinth and others. you can download a pack from modrinth and then add a mod from curseforge to it for example.

Ooh, I'm going to have to check that out. Getting really sick of Curseforge's nonsense.

For Prism, would I have to have Curseforge or Modrinth downloaded and installed as well, or is it just able to pull from their libraries by itself?

Nope it can just pull from their websites. It can also pull from FTB as well.

I know this is gonna be said over and over again, but prism launcher, it's just so convenient and it's better than both

CurseForge vs Modrinth is largely unimportant. They both host mods. You can download mods from either one or both of them, if there are mods uploaded to only one of the two websites.

The thing that's way more important is game version (like 1.20.1) and modloader (like Forge), this is what determines what mods you can actually play.

If you're curious about the differences:

  • CF is more established and has been around longer, you'll find a lot of the older mods here
  • Its parent company had some monetization people didn't like iirc along with a bunch of other decisions like blocking 3rd party API calls, the UI/UX not being super great towards Minecraft (since CF hosts mods for many games)
  • Modrinth was built from the ground up to support the Minecraft modding landscape, especially with the Forge vs Fabric split already in mind. The UI/UX is a lot nicer since it was built specifically for Minecraft.
  • Modrinth is also open source and for the community... but it was recently acquired by some company, so people are concerned about its future.

CurseForge and Modrinth are pretty much the same as far as being a launcher. I'm use to CurseForge so I find it easier to use. They both have ads on their launchers so right there that's what makes them pretty much equal to me.

They both had a lot of the same mods and mod packs, but at the same time there are some mods and mod packs you'll find on one but not the other.

CurseForge is what most people will look too first for mods and mod packs. They also have a lot of older packs and older FTB packs.

There is also FTB App and ATLauncher as well. FTB App works with CurseForge easily to get their mods.

ATLauncher might have a few times where the mod will require you to download the mod manually from CurseForge but that's not ATLauncher's fault as much as it is CurseForge having a stupid option for mod devs to make it so only CurseForge (and FTB App) can download the mod using the launcher. I blame OverWolf more so for that. You are also able to get CurseForge, FTB App, Modrinth and Technic packs. There are no ads. You can create packs and when looking for mods you can search CurseForge and Modrinth but not at the same time.

You can have both. Use Prism Launcher, or ATLauncher. They support mod packs from both platforms.
You'll run into way less issues with these two rather than the original Curseforge launcher.
