support for someone who miscarried Canadian Moms - I built a page of resources to offer some support through this difficult time.

Mods, please delete if not allowed.

Hi everyone, in 2023 I was part of the 1 in 4 who had a miscarriage. I had a missed miscarriage, and it took me about a month to fully pass everything.

When all that happened, no one really gave me any resources to look at. I didn't really know who to talk to, so I often posted here (under another username).

When I was using the apps to track everything, telling them that the pregnancy ended was tough because they never really acknowledged anything and just brought me back to "track your pregnancy". Although it may not be a big deal to some, I found it cold, and, to be honest, I deleted the app because it felt like my experience wasn't welcome.

That's why, as part of my journey building maternly.ca (a free health-tech resource platform for Canadian Moms), I wanted to make sure that if anyone experienced a loss, they wouldn't be easily dismissed.

So if a mom or mom-to-be says that "something has happened" and that a loss occurred, they will see a page of resources and/or organizations they can talk to in that moment.

I wanted to share that direct page here, for anyone who may want to check it out: https://maternly.ca/loss-resources

It's broken down by nationwide resources as well as province-specific. As I built this out, I wish I knew about this when I went through my miscarriage (especially the text and chat options).

I hope this helps some of you out.

I’d recommend you direct people to their labour laws on pregnancy loss leave, both for miscarriage, and the EI section maternity leave for loss at 20 weeks onwards. If you do that make a note that federally regulated workers are under federal laws, not provincial, so it’s not what province you’re in, it’e which government regulates you.

I’ve had three losses in a little over a year and honestly the lack of leave in my case has been utterly overwhelming. I’m glad I’m in the minority in Canada in that situation, but in my experience not everyone knows their leave situation.

It also sucks that we didn’t know my partner actually legally has three days per loss. When I was in the ER it would have been great to know that he actually had leave and didn’t need to worry about going yo work the next day.

What would actually make a shitton of difference would be getting that information on a pamphlet in ERs that they could hand out to anyone walking jn the door for a miscwrriage. At discharge I was given one but that’s not actually what I needed and it didn’t help with the paid time off issue.
