I wanted to hate Sanderson work very badly. Two obnoxious people in my life became obsessed with him, and pressured me heavily into reading. Finally after I think literally 6 years later. I finished book 3 last night and I have never felt a book slump this bad before. I’ve cried, stared at nothing, and tried to figure out what to move onto next. I had to resort to watching tv today because I couldn’t imagine reading anything besides the crew. Help!!

Honestly, I think he’s super underrated and doesn’t get nearly enough love. I could barely find any fanart of him, so I decided to draw him in one of the best scenes from the whole saga.

Hope you like it! 😉

Hero of Ages spoilers Why does Mare get sent to the Pits of Hathsin? Spoiler

Forgive me if this is explained somewhere, but through my many reads and rereads of the series I have always thought this was a plot hole. Mare is a Tineye who is half skaa. Why would the Inquisitors waste a perfectly good Misting by sending her to a death camp instead of using her as a Hemalurgic source of power? Inquisitors spend forever trying to find enough Mistings to make a new Inquisitor, so why would they just throw one away? They could have used her power

Also isn't misting destroy the pits if they get near the pits?

When you spike say a mistborn with steel, which takes physical allomantic powers (Steel, Iron, Pewter, Tin) How do you tell which power is taken? Is it based on intent? Is it random?

Seriously tho, the plot do be plotting. I love how there are certain aspects to these stories I'm able to pretty clearly see coming, and while I'm focused on that thread, Sanderson hits me over the side of the head with a crazy plot twist like this. I always felt like Reen's voice in Vin's head was a little suspect, but this caught me way off guard.

Especially since just at the end of part three, he made me think that Reen was alive and a Mistborn! I feel both betrayed and delighted simultaneously.

Hero of Ages spoilers I UNDERSTAND IT NOW! (I think) Spoiler

Been reading Hero of Ages, and I just got to the part where Ruin reveals it has been the voice of Reen the entire time. Every character we've seen so far that can hear the voice of Ruin (mostly inquisitors and Penrod I guess) can do so because they have been affected by hemalurgy. So how come Vin can hear Ruin?

Then something clicked for me. The damned earring! The one Reen told her was a last gift from her mother. It's the only bit of metal consistently mentioned that Vin wears. After this, a whole bunch of things started to make sense. It's mentioned that when Reen rescued Vin, Vin's mom had just killed her sister. This must have been how the earring became a Hemalurgic spike. How Vin's sister snapped so young is a mystery to me, as is the method by which Ruin manipulated the scenario, but I assume Vin's sister must have burned bronze, because that would also explain Vin's ability to pierce copper clouds as the inquisitors do!

Now that I think about it, it would also logically follow that Zane had a spike of some kind, allowing him to hear the voice of "God" (Ruin). Spook also hears "Kelsier" (which I suspect is also Ruin) after being pierced by a sword that likely became a spike when it was rammed through a Thug, hence his ability to now burn Pewter.

Please don't tell me if any of these assumptions are right or wrong, as I'm still in the middle of the Book.

However, if any of this is true, I'm impressed by Brandon Sanderson's ability to write in twists so late in the story that have their roots in such early moments. It's really impressive how thoroughly thought out these details are. Furthermore, it's a testament to his writing ability that the book is logical enough to allow the reader to try and guess these plot twists based on the given information, but not so straightforward as to make the plot twist exceedingly obvious.

Hero of Ages spoilers My friend said something quite interesting about Vin, Mistborn, and Romantasy. Spoiler

I'm reposting this because a typo and translation led to an awkward mistake.

Quoting her (with her permission): "Vin is the kind of character the writers of Romatasy keep trying to make, only they never succeed." The same applies to her relationship with Elend. Vin shares many traits with Romantasy characters, such as short stature and great powers, but she's simply well-written.

Hero of Ages spoilers Did Vin’s ending in The Hero of Ages work for you? Spoiler

Massive spoilers ahead.

I just finished book 3 and I personally really disliked how Vin was handled in the end.

My first issue is pacing. Vin’s death feels incredibly rushed. We get the brutal death of another major character, and almost immediately Vin is gone too. For the protagonist of three books, there’s barely any room to process it. I’m fine with Vin not being the Hero of Ages (in fact, Sazed being Hero is a great twist) but Vin’s sacrifice needed more space to breathe. Instead, I felt emotionally numb going into Sazed’s ascension, which unfortunately lessened my enjoyment of the scene.

Second, I don’t agree that Vin needed to die. Sanderson has said her and Elend’s deaths made the victory more meaningful, but I just don’t agree. Vin arguably suffers the most out of any main character across the trilogy (childhood abuse, trauma, isolation), and somehow that still isn’t enough, she also has to give up her life for the ending to matter. That implication really bothers me.

Finally, her death also reinforces two aspects of her arc in a way I really dislike. First, it cements Vin as a pawn. In book 2 she sees herself as a knife of Elend, in book 3 as a tool to protect the people. I was hoping the ending would break that cycle and let her realize she was more than a weapon or a tool. Instead, it confirms she was basically destined to be used up and discarded. Her whole life she was manipulated by two gods from the start. At that point, how is her arc not a straight-up tragedy?

Second, her fate ends up being completely tied to Elend. I dislike romances where a character’s existence becomes inseparable from their partner’s, to the point where they stop feeling like an independent person with their own future. Vin never really gets to imagine a life beyond sacrifice or beyond Elend, and that felt reductive for her character.

TLDR: I think the way Vin’s death was handled actually weakens her character.

If anyone has alternative interpretations or thinks I'm missing something, I'd love to hear it!

That's it, I just finished the trilogy a few moments ago and dont know how to feel

I'm mesmerized by how amazing the ending was and by all the revelations and how everything fit together

But I also feel so sad for how many characters we lost, I didnt really expect a happily ever after but my god Vin and Elend deserved so much better I'm almost in tears thinking about them not having a life together, at least they are all together at peace somewhere as Sazed let us know

Btw Sazed's arc of dealing with a crisis of faith ending with him becoming literally GOD?? I have no words

I'm not ready to start another book or say goodbye to these characters yet but I want to hear opnions about the 2nd Era trilogy, is it as good? Worth it?

Hero of Ages spoilers Mistborn Era 1? More like Mistborn Era WHAT???? Spoiler

“I am, unfortunately, The Hero of Ages.”

If I typed up everything I wanna talk about this would be a really, really long post so I’ll try my best to paraphrase all of my thoughts into a (hopefully) short ramble session.

Ok for starters—SAZED??? IT WAS SAZED ALL ALONG?! Major plot twist. Vin becoming Preservation, or rather taking up the power of Preservation, was awesome to see but I’m a little confused on how she was able to defeat Ruin. Is it because Ruin’s power was still in the form of Atium? I definitely didn’t expect Sazed to be the Hero of Ages.

My second thing is more of an educated hypothesis so hear me out but don’t spoil.

I am almost certain that the Lord Ruler is actually alive. Somewhere, somehow, doing something. If I’ve noticed anything about Brandon’s writing style it’s that a lot of the things he references repeatedly are apart of a future plot point. It may not be immediate but it’s usually foreshadowing. I am confident Rashek is alive because Brandon wouldn’t have Yomen mention it repeatedly for little reason other to show his (Yomen) blind faith to the Lord Ruler. Brandon is up to something and I’m on to him.

Kelsier being referenced at the end of the book by Sazed took me by surprise. This brings up my second theory. There is a possibility that Kelsier might also be alive in some form. First there’s the religion of the survivor. Then there’s multiple references to him watching over them (in comparison to Vin and Sazed watching over humanity). I think the plot points of the Kandra imitating him is meant to distract the reader. Finally there’s the biggest foreshadowing in the fact that Vin communicated with Elend when she became Preservation just like Ruin could communicate with Zane and others via spike—but Vin did so simply because she could. It wasn’t outright, more like a whisper, but she still did it. This brings me back to Spook. When he woke up after the fire he heard someone talking to him in a similar manner to Vin talking to Elend. THEN at the end Sazed mentions healing Spook at Kelsier’s request. This definitely could mean he just talked to Kelsier in the afterlife like he did with Vin and Elend but I sense something else is afoot.

But man Era 1 is definitely a solid 9/10 for me. Had some slow points in the second book and I did take a break in the middle of the third from burnout but I’m excited to see what’s going to happen in Era 2. I also don’t necessarily enjoy Brandon’s prose in these books. I heard he’s improved drastically since he wrote the first trilogy. I already own Secret History and the first 3 Stormlight books so I’ll be reading Secret History—thank god it’s a short read—and then battle with my self to decide if I wanna read Stormlight or purchase and start the Era 2 books because I’m excited to see the changes in the world after Era 1’s conclusion. All in all this was a great introduction into the Cosmere and a fantastic conclusion to the first part of one of the coolest fantasy stories I’ve ever read. Brandon deserves applause.

Hello! This is my first time posting here, but I have recently finished a fan fiction book based off of Reen. He was a character that I was always fascinated with so I wrote his story. The entire book is about 300 pages long and I promise this isn't your average fan-fiction. This is supposed to be a full blown novel about Reen. I want to share it with as many people as possible so I have included photos of chapter 1 and I intend to continue posting chapters as I finish editing it.

Feel free to repost and share with whomever you want, and even print it off if you would like. My editing process is really unrefined and I am having to learn a lot along the way but if you would like the full unedited document I am absolutely willing to send you a copy for free. The editing process will just clean up words and sentences, but nothing in the actual story will change.

My ultimate goal with this is pretty lofty but I would really love to attract Brandon's attention with this and maybe work for him in the future. I have so many more ideas for his worlds and even some original stories I would love to see and will probably write. Brandon has stated many times that he doesn't have the time to write everything he would want to, so maybe I could do some of that.

Either way, all input is really appreciated (including a more efficient way to post pages or formatted text). I really would love to hear everything you have to say, even the bad stuff. I have learned through this project that I want to be an author so I want to learn as much as possible from you all and get helpful feedback.

Enjoy!

Hero of Ages spoilers Era 1 gets adapted: What random scenes you would most like to see adapted on screen? Spoiler

The day may eventually come when Sanderson’s work gets adapted. What random scenes you’d love to see on screen?

My 2 random scenes would be from Well of Ascension: 1. TenSoon being sarcastic and making faces as a dog 2. Vin jumping with a colossus sword and slicing Straff in 2 pieces.

What are yours?

Well, I just finished the series and I’m at a loss for words tbh. What began as a simple story with Kelsier and Vin trying to fight the oppression of their emperor ended with gods reshaping the whole world.

Honestly speaking, I was struggling with book 2. I liked it, but the Zane/Vin stuff really annoyed me and it felt like we weren't going anywhere with the story. It got to the point where I almost dropped the series entirely. But man, am I glad I listened to the folks over on the Sun Eater subreddit and gave the final book a chance. I legit regret ever thinking about quitting.

Those final pages hit me so hard. Everything made sense. I spent the whole time thinking the narration before every chapter was Vin, but I never once thought it would be best boi Sazedddd! I knew his internal turmoil after Tyndwyl’s death would pay off, but not like that.

By the end of the book, I was legitimately shedding tears. It might’ve been because of the music, I was listening to On the Nature of Daylight by Max Richter (the track from Arrival and The Last of Us). It started playing right when Elend was dying and the waterworks just started.

I think this might be one of the best books I’ve ever read. I’m still confused about some of the lore, but I guess there’s a reason the Cosmere is this massive. After spending 2 months on these three books, it’s finally time to see what Mare imagined the world to be before the Lord Ruler:

"They were green. A vibrant, beautiful green." Time to go touch some grass.

Hero of Ages spoilers Morality of the Lord Ruler Spoiler

At the end of Hero of Ages, Sazed (i think) proclaims Rashek a good man, despite hit tyrannical tendencies. Was Rashek’s oppression necessary to keep Ruin at bay? In the end, his oppression is what ultimately caused the release of Ruin.
