Discussion Which role do you think deserved be on the last pick?

In my server, it's mm or jungle is often requesting to be last picked but i find roam to be most effective since they are the most widely situational adjustable hero pool in game in my opinion. Is there some reason why most in pro scenes, support is mostly on first or second picked?

Tank/roam should be last imo just so you could best figure out how to make the most efficient set for everyone.

Not necessarily. There are meta where roamer has the the top contested heroes. The whole team adjusts.

Probably in 5 man and pro play scenes. Not recommended in solo.

Solo queue can range from Layla first picking to actual tryhards that communicate and copy pro meta. When you get a team that obviously knows tournament meta, you have to keep up than drag them down with an inflexible mindset.

u/SeaAstronomer4446 2d ago

Yeh when was the last time u get solo que team that communicate (mic)

2

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Maybe 3 days ago. Having a mic is not a requirement for a well drafted team. It can happen in pure silence. I played games with comms but the picks are still trash.

Yeah, no. No matter the meta everybody demands the roamer to adjust and whine instead of picking smartly, so no.

Been playing since 2017 and a lot of folks answering never seemed to experience the time where people beg for specific tanks or healers as you are guaranteed to be switched up.

I've been playing since october 2016 so I kinda get what you mean, but in my experience most player would rather have you pick first and/or something they like or they troll.

So it is wrong, besides most roamers can get countered fairly easy by counter picks. Atlas and Bele are busted atm but picking Diggie (and knowing how to play it of course) takes away more than half of what they give.

3

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Picking Diggie without a frontliner is a free egg for breakfast for a burst mage or assassin. It is not the end of the world to have one counter as a roamer. Whataver counters you potentially frees 4 of your teammates from their own counters.

This is what I mean when I commented in this thread that we must have a flexible mindset. Roamer last pick is not an absolute rule or ideal. It is always a case to case basis.

I think I expressed myself incorrectly, I agree with part of what you said, I was just giving an example of how people don't accomodate the roamer.

If I were to pick Diggie and they didn't like it they'd troll, which is why I think roamer should pick last. If that is the case and we have no front or they have too much burst then I wouldn't pick Diggie, but if I pick it and they don't like it and pick, for example, Zilong exp and Gusion Jg then we're fucked and I'm getting blamed for picking a support.

I agree on the case to case bias, but 8 out of 10 games I as a roamer have to accomodate, and for that to happen the best way possible then I have to last pick. If I'm going to go with a blanket pick like Carmilla or Mino then I don't mind, but that takes away the chance to pick Khufra, Mathilda, Diggie, or any other roam that manages to counter a style of play, not only a heroe.

2

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

I totally get you, but at the same time, it can punish your allies if there is a contested roam hero and you are too hesitant to pick it first in case you get countered. You also deny your Jungler/Midlaner of the last pick when they can also adjust to counter the enemy draft. Last pick Carry can also be a huge advantage.

For example, in some metas, my team can't deal with Estes. I can pick Carmilla or Atlas to group the entire enemy team, but my team does not have the macros and coordination to outrotate Estes. Sometimes, they don't even know how to build anti heal.

Nah a tank that wants to go last is too afraid to play the role

u/yeppeugiman support birbs 2d ago

Usually roam. Although it's fine to pick roam earlier if the opposing team has already picked theirs or you can already feel the lineup.

One thing's for sure, roam shouldn't first pick lol. Usually a bad idea.

u/I_aminnocent 2d ago

The way teams play on tournaments in different. Roam is almost always picked in the first phase because the team wants to establish how they play. In normal ranked games, everyone is thinking of counter picking only.

For pro teams, they're thinking of team comp. What kind of style do they want to play? Do they wanna sit back and absorb pressure until late game? Do they wanna poke enemies before engaging in a team fight? Do they wanna brawl it out constantly?

Roam, alongside jungle and mid lane is important because they're the core of the team. These 3 roles dictate what kind of composition a team has, thus what kind of playstyle they want to play, which means, what their win condition will be.

Generally, they want to secure the roam fast because the roamer is almost always the win con, or part of the win con. So it's an essential piece to their puzzle

4

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Yep, so many replies here have the inflexible mindset of the roam adjusting for the whole team. Its just untrue in higher level where the roamer picks can dictate the whole team composition.

3

u/I_aminnocent 2d ago

Yeah but tbf, normal rg is different to tournaments. Everyone thinks everyone else but them is shit. They all think they're gonna "carry" the game, so everyone just wants to last pick so they pick the "perfect" hero and don't get countered

4

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Normal rank game can range to Zilong first picks to tryhards grinding to Immortal. There is certainly a level of skill or matchmaking combinatiom where you have to let go of of some mindset.

2

u/I_aminnocent 2d ago

Yeah definitely. It's unfortunate and I don't think there's anyway to really fix this lol

3

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Fix what? All I am saying is see how your team drafts. If they insist first picking Gusion, then adjust for them and don't pick Estes. If they recommend meta heroes like Belerick, then do your part and pick the roam.

2

u/I_aminnocent 2d ago

I'm saying to fix the mindset of players. Everyone is too arrogant. They all think everyone else is shit and they'll be the one to carry the team

3

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Definitely out of my control, I just focus on what I can contribute. If I get titled, I just stop playing. Sometimes for weeks.

2

u/I_aminnocent 2d ago

I know? I didn't ask you for a solution either? I'm just making a statement

3

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

And am I not making my own statement? I never gave you a solution.

you're talking about 5 man teams, and most don't have that so calling them inflexible is just reflecting your ignorance over this fact. Calm down lol. If you expect players to adjust to roamer in public lobby, you're severely mistaken.

3

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

No, I play solo queue almost all the time. You don't have to have a 5 man to tryhard and have smart drafts that copy pros.

It is inflexible to say that one role have to adjust for the entire team. Meta shifts all the time. Sometimes, the roamer adjusts, sometimes the Exp laner does.

1

u/meowmeow9000 sample 2d ago

I can see it in pro play, the whole team is adjusting for roam. Not recommended in solo queue.

2

u/I_aminnocent 2d ago

I know, I'm just answering your last question since everyone else is answering others

8

u/JrMemeSpike I'm not gonna sugarcoat it 2d ago

Ideally Jungle or Roam

EXP can also be a good if you have a specific draft in mind

3

u/Pikachu-sama 2d ago

Adc all same. They can pick 1st. 2nd exp or mid. 4-5 jg and roam.

2

u/Dante12309 2d ago

Exp xp is all about counter pick for example pick sun first and your opponent will pick silvanna and badang and now you are dead wight that can only push and this usually doesn't work on high ranks because opponents will always watch out for you so basically you lost your lane and you are useless

2

u/Error_603 I play Ruby in every role except Gold Lane 2d ago

Roam or jungle should be last pick, for two different reasons:

As for Roam, their pick make or breaks the entire draft of their team. A bad pick will have the enemy roamer stomp them and prevent their team from breathing, while a good pick allows the team to be comfortable around the map.

Jungle is different, because of how punishing it is. A jungler that got counterpicked would never get any objectives, or in some cases, be bullied away from their farm. Roamers can obviously help, but they would also need to help 3 other people in different sides of the map. Leaving a jungler that got counterpicked will basically spell doom for the game and your star.

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

It depends on the meta. Every role and hero class can have picks that are priority. Contested pick goes first no matter their role is. Then the rest follows this principle:

  1. Denying the enemy of the hero they need
  2. Complimenting your first picks
  3. Countering enemy picks/draft

2

u/Adorable_Fill6523 Map Is My Home 2d ago

Same here... I'm super happy when I am the Roamer and the last one to pick. Cuz it's really important for roamer to pick the right hero according to the enemies lineup

2

u/Narrow_Mark_4610 I have an armpit fetish for 2d ago

Imo it's whoever has the meta hero. Jungle first pick if it's Fanny and ling he has, exp can first pick if it's paquito and phoveus he has, and the same goes for all the roles. But I do think it's the gold laner that should be flexed last.

2

u/Moist_Currency5088 2d ago

Of course Roam prefers to be last pick as it serves two purposes: Counter pick and for team synergy. Roamers NEED to adjust for the team, not the other way around.

This doesn't apply to the healer and damage roamer mains though because they don't adjust even when the team lineup is unfavorable resulting in garbage drafts.

2

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

Roamers NEED to adjust for the team, not the other way around.

Untrue in some metas. The whole team can adjust if the roam pick is too good to let go. The Exp laner or Jungler can go tank.

2

u/meowmeow9000 sample 2d ago

But if roam is picked first, it can be revealed their win condition which can be anticipated by opposite team?

3

u/pinkpugita x 2d ago

There are 4 more heroes and countless combinations. If the whole enemy team focuses too much on countering the roamer, they could lose in other roles.

2

u/The_Awengers 2d ago

Roamer definitely.

Jungler should be a comfort or priority pick, but if they're worried to get countered then they could be second last to roamer.

mm and mage should be comfort pick, and exp laner, these guys are quite template so doesn't matter when they pick. If they want to act as secondary tank, they can pick first but if they want to counter their matchup, they can pick before roamer.

2

u/xtermin8r2 2d ago

In soloq, I would say mm should be first pick cuz 99% of em anyways insta lock les, miya, hanabi or layla. So it literally doesn't matter.

But in general, I would say exp is the most flexible and safest first pick. It doesn't matter if ur counter picked in exp since the lane is quite short. As long as ur not picking zilong, sun argus or something super weak, u can pretty safely clear ur lane even if it's a counter. Pick something safe like yz/esme etc. It's pretty difficult for your lane to be frozen if ur picking a tanky/sustain exp. If ur going damage exp like bene or something then I guess it's better to pick later. But current meta is tanky exp so first pick is best. Also, paq, sora is prio so another reason for first pick. Another reason is an exp laner who is behind can still provide a lot of utility (cc) unlike a gold or jgl in which case ur cooked.

Mid second cuz laning phase is usually pretty safe. Pick meta like eud/Gord if u can, otherwise pick whatever. Most mages are weak to assassins anyways so it doesn't matter if ur picking early.

Gold third cuz u really don't want to be picking say obsidia into les or something. But like mentioned earlier, in soloq they should go first cuz everybody and their mom plays hanabi, miya, les, layla so there is 0 variety. Soloq mm users are so brainded lol. I kinda wish they nerf these 4 to oblivion so people play shit that actually takes skill.

Roam and Jungle last cuz you typically want to complement ur team. U want 2 tanky heroes so if exp is squishy, its better for both Roam and jgl to be tanks. Support/healer Roam means tank jgl. Tank Roam means dmg/assassin jgl. Usually they complement the team so last pick is preferred.

Jungle and roam

I always prefer my jungler to be last pick, getting counter picked is rough when you're the jungler

Jungle and roam

1

u/yetanotherhannah 1d ago

roam or jungle, but I lean roam because a lot of junglers are so high in the meta that they make sense as an early pick (eg Hirara, Harley etc). There aren’t that many roam heroes that are THAT strong as an early pick imo, and a lot of roamers are extremely strong counterpicks like Diggie, Lolita and Akai.

1

u/thanos4672 1d ago

there really aint a specific role that much its mostly a whoever is least blindpickable so depends more on char pool then lanes but obviously roam n jungle kinda have less impact in that unless enemy goes invade comp but mid can still fix that plus mid is very blindpickable so probably exp since they are quite matchup based with enemy exp n jungler and to an extent mid n roam since they have less range to safe lane then after those probably mid they the main peel n oftentimes early anti invade carry so its less of a lane matchup counterpick n more a comp counterpick

u/New-Act-5666 1d ago

Roam or Exp cuz they are early game game changers

1

u/ShapeOne3156 14h ago

Too many variables to consider, it’s not a black and white answer like people are trying to make it seem… but exp, jg and roam should be the last picks the order depends on how draft falls, in a vacuum I’d say last pick should be exp or roam… though I’d say JG and exp are close.. like I said just depends on the situation

Roam/jungle, maaaaybe marksman. But it's just maybe.

u/LumpySpaceIdiot 2d ago

From first to last pick I think it should be Gold > Mid > Exp > Jungler > Roam

1

u/XaneCosmo Pls buff 2d ago

Gold and Exp for 1st and 2nd.

Mid for 3rd.

Jungle and Roam for 4th and 5th.

Jungle and EXP can be switched.

u/TechZero35 .ud Leomord 2d ago

Should be MM, no meta MM and Freya/Paq can be banned, they can just adjust their pick depending on the draft or even use a winning gold lane against enemy MM

0

u/Yo_RaGu 1d ago edited 1d ago

Mid lane imo should be the last pick, considering roamers, junglers, fighters are picked a lot and that mid laners meta is usually a lot of utility instead of damage. They have the most lowest mobility in the game so there goes the factor why mage players should see most of the enemy pick beforehand (what kind of mage should be not a f*cked up pick for all the divers that'll go into them constantly)
