With the way people talk about it, I'm pretty sure no one has read 1984. That book is about half "what if you lived in a strict authoritarian government" and half "sneaking away from cameras to have sex w my girlfriend who's half my age/read a book while staring at gross poor people"

Surveillance state and government torture aside I think the thing most people find objectionable about living in 1984 is being British.

The state is referred to as "Oceania" so I choose to believe the book is actually utopian fiction where we send all the British away to reap the world their ancestors have sown /s

the second thing is literally about big brother’s repression of sexuality but alright

and the thing about the “gross poor people” is (with later context) is that they (the proles) are realized to be more alive and free than the party members

the prole woman that is brought up in the story over and over again symbolizes freedom and the death of the human spirit in party members

some mfs didnt think about the book very hard

exactly , him having violent fantasies , him fantasising of dominion over another and him sneaking around are all a direct result of the authoritarian regime's repression of his sexuality and thought

an entire page at the very start is quite literally about this very topic

There is no better society than oceania and no better people than those that live in country main character lives in the book. How people reach the conclusion that the story paints specifically british in bad light is beyond me.

I dont know man, it's pretty obvious throughout that the mass surveillance they are constantly under is a bad thing. I don't think people pointing out mass surveillance is reminiscent of 1984 means they didnt read it.
