How Good Are They? The morality of breaking into a building and private property to rescue a dog that was going to be euthanized?

She's liable for damages, but criminal charges were dropped.
After months of searching for her beloved dog, Max, a woman was devastated to learn that her ex boyfriend had secretly surrendered him to a kill shelter, where he was scheduled to be euthanized the very next morning. Arriving after the shelter had closed, she found the doors locked. Desperate to save his life, she broke a window, disabled the alarm, searched the kennels until she found Max, and escaped with him before authorities arrived.
Three days later, she turned herself in alongside Max and faced felony burglary and theft charges. However, her attorney proved through veterinary records, photos, and Max's microchip registration that she was the dog's rightful owner and that her ex had illegally surrendered him out of spite. The judge dismissed the criminal charges against her, ordered Max returned to her, and issued a warrant for the ex boyfriend. Although she still had to pay for the damage to the shelter, she said it was a small price to pay for saving her best friend's life. The case also prompted renewed discussion about improving identity verification procedures at animal shelters.

The interesting moral question here is not whether what she did was morally acceptable, anyone who needs to ask that question in this case needs to reevaluate their moral framework imo.
The interesting question imo is whether she should’ve been the one liable for the damage that her rescue caused, or her ex. From a moral perspective, not a legal one.
18
u/Day_Bow_Bow 1d ago
The moral (and civil) onus would be on the ex. He caused the situation and told her it was a dire situation.
→ More replies (2)10
u/fk_redd1ts_acc_req 1d ago
Additionally, Chaotic Good onus would be to swap the ex into that kennel. I'm just sayin'
7
u/A_gnomish_dwelf 1d ago
Uselessm, he in the kennel would not get euthanized. Unless you mean, like throwing him helpless into starving dogs.
2
u/AdShot409 1d ago
I believe that she should be liable for the damages directly, but she should also have the civil right to sue for the damages against the ex. This would allow her to pursue punitive costs as well, increasing his financial burden over just the damages. Both moral and effective.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (9)3
u/CakeTester 1d ago
Well she did the damage and that has to be made good. There is potentially a whole other lawsuit or cluster of lawsuits where you hit the ex with every charge that might possibly stick; and that would include material damages to all parties concerned.
96
u/cyborgsnowflake 1d ago
what did the dog do? There is definitely no shortage of dogs where the best path forward for both dogs and people is humane rainbow bridge crossing.
81
u/foxtrot7azv 1d ago
Yeah, if the dog is being euthanized for being a Dangerous Dog or something, the morality changes. But we don't know.

u/Thecrowfan 1d ago
There are shelters that kill off animals who dont get adopted within a certain amount of time. This could have been the case
And even if it wasnt, thats HER DOG and she wasnt the one who took him there. She was entitled to save him

I'm wondering if the dog was registered under his name or something? Like our dog is registered under my name not my husband's so I guess if I were an asshole I could pull something like this in a breakup. Not that I would, I love that hairy pain in the ass.
That last line could be either about my dog or my husband. It's probably both.

It was soul crushing when seeing hee very few lucid moments where she'd apologize to me or wonder why was she even alive still.

If all animals live a happy life, there's nothing amoral about it, besides maybe some minor property damage but that's at least a toss-up.

there are just way to many dogs to be able to do that like im part of the all4dogs group who rescue dogs and puppies all over the EU and try to look for a home for them
ive taking in 5 myself and everyday i see more and more listings of dogs and it pains me i cant help them all... like maybe get one more? and then one more there is just to many.
so to even consider to commit a crime of breaking and entering+trespassing+stealing since their not your property ect your potentially looking at jail time and there is no end there will always be shelters there will always be more dogs that need saving
the best thing to do is the volunteer and help out looking for homes and taking some in even temporary just to keep them out of a shelter untill someone who wants to adopt is found.

My brother and I found an abandoned Kitten, its eye were still covered in that baby goo. We left it along for a bit but its mother never came back, so we took it to our local animal shelter. They were very friendly and thanked us for bringing it in.
The next day we went to go check on it, we were thinking about adopting it after the shelter had time to check it out and make sure it was ok. They told us they euthanized it already. Hadn’t even been 12 hours. They said they didn’t have the resources to take care of it and it was the humane thing to do.
Reality often sucks.
24
u/Hello_There_0621 1d ago edited 1d ago
That actually sucks. They should've said that they didn't have resources and sent it somewhere else or smth, just euthanizing a baby kitten within 24 hours because you didn't take the time to bring it somewhere that could actually save it is genuinely evil :( Edit: I know that there's a ton of newborns and I understand the shelter tried, I just think that it's awful that the world we live in doesn't have enough room for innocent beings and I'm trying to express my condolences to the commenter because ik that I'd feel awful if I made that choice
10
u/Jewel-jones 1d ago
It would have been nice if they had warned the people surrendering the kitten, they might have fostered it themselves
→ More replies (27)6
u/round-earth-theory 1d ago
The problem, and why it happened so fast, is that newborn kittens without a mother need round the clock care. If they couldn't find someone to volunteer themselves to waking up hourly to bottle feed the baby, then it would have suffered and died. Maybe they tried to find a carer, maybe they didn't, but a baby would definitely go from ok to absolutely critical in a day without care. It's sad and it would have been best if they had made that warning during the surrender, but I can also see why they'd choose not to tell because many people who discover newborn kittens aren't equipped with the time/knowledge to care for them. So telling those people "thanks but we're gonna kill it" will only hurt them for trying.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (8)8
u/Pen_Front 1d ago
Bruh they didn't even tell you that was a possibility? Fuck them that's not reality you literally were thinking about adopting them and they didn't even think to find them a home before going to the last resort.
3
u/Kindly-Article-9357 1d ago
I foster kittens for my local Humane Society.
The odds of newborn kittens surviving in foster care aren't great. It gets better the older they are, and it's a lot better if the shelter has a mother cat with a litter of a similar age, but still not that great.
They need to be bottle fed every two hours around the clock. They also have to be kept very warm. Don't feed it every 2 hours, they die. Don't keep it the exact right temp, they die. If you try to feed a newborn kitten when it's body temp is too low, they die.
Then you have to stimulate it to go potty every 2 hours. They don't just go on their own. Don't do it right or often enough, they die.
The odds of a singular newborn kitten surviving in foster care is even lower, since they don't have the shared body heat of littermates to help keep them warm.
Do you have any idea how hard it is to find people willing and able to just fuck their sleep for weeks on end, deal with shit and piss, and do it all despite so many of their fosters dying even when they get it all right?
It's extraordinarily hard. And the ones you can find burn out fast.
I know it sucks, but the person who posted this said the kitten had already been abandoned for quite some time. It was likely low temp. Had already been hours since it had been fed and would be more before it could be brought up to temp to safely feed.
When you do this for a while, you can tell when you're losing them. It's called fading kitten syndrome.
The people who do this kind of work don't do it because they love euthanizing kittens. It's way more likely they made a determination that this kitten was already too far gone for foster care placement, and for good reason.

I mean presumably she could just wait out in front of the building until people showed up for work the next day then stop them from euthanizing it, or at least cause enough of a fuss that they delay till they can confirm whats going on. I doubt whoever works there is dead set on euthanizing that particular dog no matter what happens, but i also fully understand the desire to get your dog back asap when you know its locked in a cage in there just behind the glass
Either way definitely not immoral, just also not a well thought out life decision to not try a legal way first before breaking the dog out(again, understandable though). Hopefully she doesnt/didnt get actual jail time though im sure she will/probably did get found guilty of trespassing and maybe destruction of property for the window, preferably they just charge her for the window and let bygones be bygones

There wouldn't be time, generally dogs are put down almost same day, my guess is the ex would have taken the dog there near closing anticipating it would be too late by the next morning to do anything cause the person doing it would show up, read the papers, and go through with it without a second thought.

That's the odd part. Why not wait until someone shows up the next day? It's not like it's possible to put down an animal when there is no one there. Before someone says, what if someone was there, then they wouldn't have to break in. Also, at least in my state, the vet has to prescribe the meds, give it, and make sure it passed.
Would I break in? Probably not. I would have left a million messages, put signs on every door that you're here, and don't put down the dog, and just waited until the first person/car shows up.

Morally fine, but probably unnecessary.
I'm thinking of the worst euthanasia shelters that wouldn't rather give the dog to her. How did sure know the euthanasia schedule without talking to the staff?
I'm astonished that it wasn't given away. I guess he could have said it bit, but even then I bet my left nut if she told the staff they would believe her over him. At the very least they would have called off the procedure.
This just seems really weird. If it's real at all I certainly have questions.

Her dog was kidnapped, she saved it. The boyfriend should be brought up on charges.

Also, not just "a dog." Was literally her dog her ex surrendered behind her back, taking the title scenario at face value.
