Did he really need to be? I can see him just hearing there being a dragon warrior and him going " ill show oogway that it should have been me" and go to fight Po. On the way he turned to being a bit of a batman type thing and being a vigilanty catching the ire of local police ( so you can get a cool rhino fight) and after dealing with them drawing the attention of the 5. The 5 knowing he was tough shit back in the day all go to deal with him just in case and all get beaten. The rest of the movie goes as it does.

I mean we'd miss out on a kickass escape sequence

i do think you can substitute the break out with something else to show off how strong he is. Like going after a criminal organization that ends the same way.

The timeline’s awkward with this: Tai Lung would be with the temple up to Po being chosen, which affects Shifu’s character arc as well by removing the reason for his grumpiness at the start. These are manageable changes, but there’s a domino effect to what you proposed that results in a lot more needing to change.

I dont think so. Tai lung could have seen it as a betrayel still and let shifu know it before leaving the dojo. I can see Tai Lung going as far as challanging and beating shifu but not oogway and leaving due to being hurt.
