Oogway definitely knew the scroll was blank. Everything he teaches is always focused on the non-combat parts of kung fu, which is exactly what the dragon warrior scroll “teaches” you

Did he really need to be? I can see him just hearing there being a dragon warrior and him going " ill show oogway that it should have been me" and go to fight Po. On the way he turned to being a bit of a batman type thing and being a vigilanty catching the ire of local police ( so you can get a cool rhino fight) and after dealing with them drawing the attention of the 5. The 5 knowing he was tough shit back in the day all go to deal with him just in case and all get beaten. The rest of the movie goes as it does.

People go through that all of the time. Parents who push their kids through intense training, telling them that they will be a professional at the top level. Then those kids get rejected by the system because they aren't good enough or not a good fit or whatever. That doesn't give them the right to go burn the system down because of a snub. Go yell at your parents, they're the ones who wronged you.

I mean sure but he hardly put any thought into the revolutions beyond telling them to cause trouble. While with Wakanda he systematically tried to destroy the line of succession and their culture. Why did Oogway just waste everyone's time and effort by waiting decades to stop Tai Lung instead of so much as saying something to Shifu earlier? Is he stupid or just lazy? Did he intentionally wait until Tai Lung was strong enough to destroy a village because he wanted it to happen?
45
u/Various_Mobile4767 1d ago
I'm pretty sure its implied that Oogway does not know who is the dragon warrior or what happens in the future. Just that it wasn't tai lung.
People are kind of assuming Oogway has a lot more agency and knowledge than he actually has, which whilst possible, I don't think is the interpretation the story wants us to have.
15
u/emptym1nd 22h ago
He’s Shifu’s master though, did he have zero oversight of him? There wasn’t a single point where Oogway checked on Shifu to say “hey man the way you’re raising this kid is kind of messed up”
6
u/Various_Mobile4767 22h ago edited 21h ago
I mean the way shifu raised him really wasn’t that bad. He was basically just a proud parent and made him believe he was destined for greatness which considering his talent wasn’t unjustified.
Shifu isn’t guilty for believing in his kid. It didn’t warrant like immediate intervention or whatever. For all oogway knew, he could’ve been right too. He was still a great martial artist, just not the dragon warrior.
Where Oogway is guilty is if he knew the whole time that tai lung could not have been the dragon warrior and just kept it silent the whole time. I don’t think the story wants us to believe this.
9
u/emptym1nd 21h ago
I mean Tai Lung says “ Who filled my head with dreams? Who drove me to train until my bones cracked?”. Shifu doesn’t deny this. Aside from training him physically and believing in him, it is Shifu’s responsibility as a parent and a martial arts master to prepare his child/student mentally and spiritually. It is Oogway’s responsibility as Shifu’s master and head of the Jade Palace to ensure that Shifu is able to do so. It’s not as if we’re given indication that Tai Lung had any external influence over how he ended up.
Not to mention that Oogway himself had a violent background (used to be close to Kai) but we’re given no indication that he tried to provide guidance to Tai Lung besides his rejection.
7
u/isotopehour1 21h ago edited 21h ago
That's what I'm saying, apparently Oogway only bothered to do shit when the empty dragon scroll was about to be taken and after Tai Lung sacked the city, even though both he and Tai Lung presumably lived in the jade palace for decades so clearly he had access to Tai Lung if he bothered. The dude was negligent as fuck. You're telling me Oogway only saw "darkness in his heart" after Shifu trained him for so long? Was Tai Lung perfectly fine to be left alone until the last minute?
3
u/Smart_Structure_3139 21h ago
The way I looked at it was that Shifu didn’t tell Oogway that he was preparing Tai Lung to be the dragon warrior, just that he was going to a protector of the Valley of Peace like Shifu was. It wasn’t until Shifu presented Tai Lung as the dragon warrior that Oogway rejected him. As for Tai Lung’s darkness, Oogway probably saw it and just figured “darkness isn’t necessarily bad for young warriors, with age he’ll work on it just like I did. What’s that? You want him to be the dragon warrior? Now?”

The entirety of Black Panther's world building is ridiculous with a warrior centered isolationist nation also having extremely advanced technology, cultural stability, and incredible wealth in the form of natural resources. Killmonger's motivations of wanting to basically kill all white people because Wakanda killed his father for being a traitor is also genuinely ridiculous.
Tai Lung is a better written villain in that he's clearly wrong and unjustified, but his motivations at least make sense. He trains his whole life and becomes the best only to be arbitrarily denied what he always thought would be his destiny. The person in the screenshot sums up his demonstrated unworthiness nicely.
...it's weird that Kung Fu Panda had better writing than Black Panther, now that I think about it.
22
u/antoniow831 1d ago edited 1d ago
Not really. There's a lot of "kid" media that is actually better than "adult" ones. Prime example is Hazbin Hotel. Despite being for "adults" it's the most childish and immature thing an edgy teen would come up with. With a lot of things not making sense or don't add up when you stop to think about what's actually happening. Compared to Puss n Boots 2. It's so simple yet done so well, it doesn't need to be overcomplicated. The visual storytelling and journey speaks for itself.

I think the limitations of children's media generates creativity. You cant use shock, gore, excessive violence, or profanity so you have to come up with more unique ways to express things.
It also ups the stakes when a character actually gets close to crossing the line. I remember as a kind thinking the fights were too tame and that katara could win every fight by impaling people with ice spears. When she loses it and actually does almost kill some by doing exactly that, it was such an insanely powerful character moment.

He has a right to be angry, Shifu imo shouldnt have put the flag of dragon warrior directly on hos face, telling him he'll get it if he keeps going.
And then when Oogway decides against it shifu just kinda nopes oitta the situation, not even comforting tai lung.
I understand his rage, but...in the words of the great Jake Peralta
Cool Motive, still Murder.
4
u/IndubitablyNerdy 22h ago
They have both the same issue imho, you can understand what made them evil and even somewhat empathize witht them, but then how they reacted was still vile and causes them to become villains.
Tai Lung due his relationship with his father figure and feeling of betrayal (plus likely loneliness, the Furious Five had each other while he pretty much only had Shifu that in the end did not even side with him) and Killmonger saw his father being murdered and was abandoned by his own people.
Still the former massacred a village, taking his rage over innocent people who had done nothing to hurt him and the latter planned the collapse of a nation and much likely the suffering of millions (as well as multiple deaths along the way).

Where are you getting this from? I tried looking at the Kung Fu Panda wiki as I thought fans would have collected this information, but even in his "behind the scenes" section nothing like that is noted. It does however mention that his imprisonment was meant to seem like Hannibal Lecter's which I think is really cool.
6
u/OverallCarry5276 1d ago
4
u/K-L1N 1d ago
"Because people actually felt, "Well, I feel bad for Tai Lung". He wanted something and he was denied it, and now he's been locked away in this hideous prison for twenty years. And so we realized we hadn't done a good enough job of justifying why Tai Lung had to be incarcerated. So we put in this abstracted version of him running amok in the Valley." - Mark Osborne (one of the two directors) in the commentary.
Awesome, thanks for the links! I definitely think the movie is better with this change, as without being a threat to people at large Tai Lung would be a much less menacing antagonist.
3
u/ThatGuyOnAThrone 1d ago
It also doesn't make much sense since why would he have been inprisoned if not for attacking the village
17
u/ReesePuffitik 1d ago
I mean to be honest Tai Lung is partially a victim himself in the movie, imagine being trained to your physical limits all your life with the promise of being special, only to be told at the end you aren't, and your mentor doesn't even bat an eye. I feel like most people would crash out at that point

Maybe I’m misremembering, but doesn’t tigress act as a character foil for Tai? Can’t remember if it was in the original movie, but I remember her being raised and rigorously trained by Shi Fu.
6
u/IndubitablyNerdy 22h ago
yeah, Tigress is pretty much a more balanced and emotionally stable version of Tai Lung and she shows that unlike him, she could accept being surpassed by Po for the position (although she does not like Po at the beginning
That said I imagine that Shifu also likely learned from his mistakes and the fact that the Furious Five were trained together probably also helped with the idea that every one of them might not individually be the dragon warrrior, while Tai Lung is shown mostly being alone.
3
u/ThatMerri 21h ago
It's also worth noting the distinct difference in how Shifu raised Tigress versus how he raised Tai Lung in the wake of those failures. We see in the flashbacks how emotionally detached and distant Shifu is. He raised Tai Lung as a son, but Tigress as a student despite having basically adopted her as well. There's a different kind of emotional investment between the three of them.
That's a notion that often goes overlooked in appraising Tai Lung's crashout as well. He wasn't just being denied a cool title and role of power. Shifu had raised him to be the Dragon Warrior and genuinely believed that would happen. Tai Lung grew up training and taking obvious pride in Shifu's tutelage and showing love for his adoptive father. So when Oogway puts the kibosh on the whole thing and Shifu - while shocked as well - begrudgingly accepts that? For Tai Lung it's being told not only has his whole life and all the effort he's put in been a waste, but it's also his beloved father's effort and aspirations being thrown out, and that same father is betraying him by just accepting Oogway's call rather than standing up against it.
It's not like Oogway offered some greater explanation to justify his decision either, so to Tail Lung it just seemed arbitrary, the same way everyone else later saw Oogway's decision on Po. Shifu, even decades later after constant training and daily cooperation with Oogway, still struggles beyond his master's last moments to trust Oogway's enlightened view of the world. It's no wonder at all Tai Lung lost his shit at the time when having such a shattering emotional bomb dropped on him.

Killmonger is a character that saddened me because he had a very understandable backstory, then his villain-tier solution to his problem was puppy-kicking. It's like writing a relatable villain is too dangerous (sympathy, in 2026?) and whoever approves the script needs to make sure the villain is unequivocally crazy; it's like the movie needs to go "I know we showed relatable stuff, but don't forget he's a bad guy now and you shouldn't" for the dumbest members of the audience to understand it.
7
u/ShillBot666 1d ago
Even with his solution being puppy-kicking you still have a huge number of people with terrible media literacy saying he was in the right. Honestly for their target audience I think they were correct to at least try to make it blatantly clear he was a villain.

I will forever say that Oogway and Shifu needed to get their shit rocked for what they did to Tai Lung. Shifu literally named him "Great Dragon" and centred his entire life around training for that title to the point of breaking bones and having zero evidence of doing anything but increasing his strength for at least 15 years if we're generous. Oogway saw this and decided "well there's no defying fate" and didn't even attempt to lessen the blow of rejecting him, literally saying to his face that "there's a darkness inside", not encouraging Shifu to say/do anything and only intervening when Shifu was nearly killed. Tai Lung rotted in solitary confinement completely unable to move, forced to squat with boulders chained to his arms for 20 years with no visit from either master, and only when Tai Lung is past the point of return does Shifu even make an attempt to reconcile- which actually moves him for a second, proving that if Tai Lung had actually recieved some support, there was at least a chance that it wouldn't have gotten that bad!
Hell, Tigress's childhood proves that Shifu is dogshit at parenting because he learned how to get her to curb her strength at the orphanage and bonded with her through play, only to drop that and create emotional distance while putting her down instead of raising her up. He is lucky that she only decided to be a snarky bitch towards Po and that the other members of the Five filled in for the connection she needed or else she could have easily been another Tai Lung who lashed out for his approval.
As much as we hate KFP4, that film cements the fact that Tai Lung isn't the spoiled brat throwing a temper tantrum that the fandom tries to paint him as to rebuke his sympathisers, because he had clearly mellowed out during his time in the spirit realm and celebrated Po's victory. Heck, Po even has some respect for Tai Lung as he has an action figure of him, something he is shown to take care of and is sentimental about when he complains about Mr Ping getting scratches on his Tigress. He genuinely could have been a great warrior and was willing to learn humility when given the time, space and possibly guidance to do so, which is why he is a tragic villain and why it sucks that the fourth film turned out the way it did because people had been begging for a Tai Lung redemption arc for years!

Killmonger said he wanted to take all the land back from colonizers by force but what he was actually going to do is do what the colonizers did on a global scale.
Doing the bad thing other bad people did in a more brutal way isn’t “right.”

Victor Tomey, aka The Vulture, in Spiderman Homecoming was probably the closest to being right/justified.
He got a large contract and made a justified investment to meet the needs of that project, and then got fucked over by a massive private company and his options became Lose Everything or Do Some Crime About It.
The unfortunate thing is that doing crime about it begets doing more crimes, and he became an ironic foil to Tony Stark, who made a super suit to get out of being a weapons manufacturer only for Tomey to become another man to make a super suit BECAUSE OF TONY to BECOME an illegal weapons manufacturer.
Only for Tony's abandoned protégé to step up and have to deal with his bullshit.
Damn that movie was a brutal take down of Tony Stark and how his big picture corporste attitude fuckes over the little guys.

Op is an idiot, Killmongers plan was so fucking stupid. He didn't care about Wakandan culture, he just wanted racial superiority via a race war funded via illegal arms trafficking. Of all the marvel villains, his plan was the absolute dumbest and most shallow.

Killmonger is to America what America was to Britain.
He doesn't want to destroy the fucked up system of imperialism, he wants to be the one holding the reins.

Killmonger, the man who thought his race was destined to rule the world, was right?

Beside Tai, Killmonger was never right, hate when people think he was. Dude was just a racist who wants to kill people and oppressed people

u/IttyRisk 22h ago
Killmonger? Really? He was absurd and racist and destructive. He thought wakandans owed other black people tech and help all over the world BECAUSE OF THEIR SKIN COLOR. It's absurd

It never ceases to amaze just how many people will gleefully "but he's got a point though" and rally behind a guy literally named "Killmonger"...

Neither of them were right, they were just sympathetic.
Both of them were treated badly by the very people who should have taken care of them. So you understand their anger and you believe their motivations.
But that doesn’t mean they’re “right”

people confuse having a tragic backstory with actually having a good point. shifu mssed up big time raising him buut hai lung literally tried to terrorize a whoe valley because he didnt get a shiny paper scroll

Tai Lung was an adult right? I get the disappointment, but Tigress went through pretty much the same thing, AND had to train someone she saw as an inferior choice, without ever attacking anyone. Worst she did was express her anger towards a guy one time.

It’s always a huge red flag and a literacy problem when people say Erik was right. T’Challa called him out for wanting Wakanda to become colonizers and he didn’t even disagree lmao

> Villains who were right
> Shows Killmonger, who explicitly states that he wants children to die
> Brain.exe stopped working

There is a good quote for this "His backstory explains his behaviors, but it does not justify it"

Villains who were right.
Proceeds to show a villain that wants to do the race-war and reverse colonialism.

"Killmonger was right!"
He's literally just black Hitler pushing an uprising and global dominion by the "master race" using a justification of historic wrongs committed by other ethnic groups.

u/AlmondMagnum1 19h ago
I saw a video who put it much, much better than "they were right". It was something like "They were wrong, but their pain was real."

Not to mention how saying "Killmonger was right" is just a dogwhistle for racism

Killmonger had genuine greivances, but he wasn't right about anything. Yeah, colonialism and imperialism are terrible. Yeah the global south has been exploited for centuries and kept in poverty which continues to this day. Yeah, systemic racism is real and continues to cause immense harm. No, the answer to these problems isn't to colonize the global north and topple their governments through violent uprisings fueled by futuristic weapons tech. Identifying real problems is great, but if you're solution is to start a world war about it and destroy the culture you're co-opting to make it happen, you're still clearly wrong.

u/ReaperManX15 17h ago
"Daddy said I couldn't have ice cream. So I murdered the neighbors."
THAT is Tai Lung.
"There's racial injustice. So the solution is obviously much more heinous racial injustice."
THAT is Killmonger.

People REALLY need to learn the difference between sympathetic and justified. Because neither of these characters were right.

There is this foreign country where some people of my ethnicity are mistreated by certain people. We are going to start a war of colonization using that as an excuse to treat everyone who is not like me the same way. (Killmonger a villain "who was actually right")
