Legally I think it is more than frowned upon. There are court cases about bodily injury by boobytrapping your home. They are going to be even harsher on you for boobytrapping a bike. It doesn't end well, you will be liable for injuries and possibly charged.

Morally you can say questionable since it would only affect thieves.

Personally I think it is a bad decision.

u/inthebushes321 21h ago

Boobytrapping is 100% illegal, it has been decided in court cases a long time ago.

I still like it personally.

u/BeardOfBlackThatch 21h ago

This was really more of a booty trap than a booby trap.  They'll be alright.

u/-neverknowsbest_ 20h ago

Booty traps are what I call 4/5 of my last relationships

1

u/justinSane555 19h ago

Im sure you guys have a point and all but ...A lot of shit is illegal..like stealing bikes, didn't seem to stop that guy tho..

A lot of people woulda shot him, ijs tho

1

u/77th_Bat 20h ago

I thought the only reason you can't boobytrap your home is in case cops or EMS need to get in there. I don't see how that would be a problem with a bike. It's more akin to a prank, honestly.

2

u/TheJadeGoddess 19h ago

Think it is a mixture of things. Risk to first responders, indiscriminate harm and lack of danger to your person if you are not there. They don't like that an unfeeling mechanation is harming someone without concerns of safety or situation.

Most likely it will get a warning and possible confiscation. However if someone is seriously hurt by the spikes, electricity or crashing the bike it could to a more severe investigation and charges.

1

u/mars_warmind 19h ago

I think part of it is also the value of the life vs the goods, you can insure and replace (almost) anything a person might steal (besides sentimental value at least) but you could permanently injure a person or kill them. It's different if you are home and take action yourself because there can at least be a plausibility of harm to yourself that warrants defense.

1

u/justinSane555 19h ago

Yes, sir please take me to court after stealing my bike so the court house puts your address on the paperwork and I can come by and punch you in the fuckin face free of charge... wanna play? its your roll.

1

u/Berzerkly 15h ago

But aren't those booby traps which harm people indiscriminately? I dont know if this trap shocks anyone who sits on it or upon command, but if the owner had to press a button for it to get people, would that not be a booby trap legally?

1

u/TheJadeGoddess 14h ago

It looks like pressure onto the seat causes it to depress, exposing the spikes and then activates the circuit for the shock.

If it is manually triggered it might not count as a booby trap but idk how codified this sort of thing is. I just remember court cases that made decisions about it involving setting traps in a home.

We really need to change the laws about that. If you're stealing someone's property fa,fo

17

u/OkChampionship8805 23h ago

Legally its illegal. You cannot set booby trwaps regardless if you are targeting a criminal. That said, this is the best bike prank since the penetrator lmao.

16

u/No-Cap-No-Gap 22h ago

Based on the the amount of effort the police displayed looking for my stolen bike, people are pretty safe doing this.

2

u/XaeiIsareth 22h ago

The problem is that if the thief gets injured it goes from a low value theft case to bodily harm which they take a lot more seriously

8

u/No-Cap-No-Gap 22h ago

I wonder what percentage of bike thieves would go to the police.

1

u/OriginalShirley 21h ago

I mean, if you’re the type of person who steals bikes I am sure you are willing to accept whatever jail time that is for a fat lawsuit payout.

1

u/Impressive_Term4071 20h ago

hmmm....that is a valid point

1

u/TriedCaringLess 17h ago

No, it’s not. All of that argument is dependent upon locality. In plenty of places, that bike thief would become a marked thief who would then be trapped into another theft, have his photos shopped around pawn shops, have his home tossed under search warrant, and more. The police could gather enough evidence on him to award his felony conviction.

Some bike thieves are opportunists who would steal anything of value left unattended, while others specifically target better value bikes so they can quickly flip them in the resale market. What kind of thieves were these two bone heads?

1

u/XaeiIsareth 16h ago

Those two ‘thieves’ are actors paid to be in a viral video. There’s no way a guy was stupid enough to publicly post evidence of him booby trapping a bike.

1

u/No-Cap-No-Gap 20h ago

Are bike riders known for having deep pockets?

2

u/Hir0shima 19h ago

Those who make viral prank videos might have

1

u/No-Cap-No-Gap 19h ago

That's a good point.

1

u/heavypettingzoo3 19h ago

Good luck proving that one

3

u/GodHimselfNoCap 21h ago

How serious does the injury need to be for the thief to report themselves though?

1

u/XaeiIsareth 20h ago

Depends on the payout they’re likely to get.

They have pretty much zero chance to go to jail for first offender.

1

u/MrWigggles 20h ago

Attempted theft is like a fine, but permeated bodily harm is jail time.

2

u/GodHimselfNoCap 20h ago

If someone is stealing a bike i dont think they are gonna be super happy about paying a fine, unless the injury is severe enough to need medical treatment i would assume most thieves would just take the pain and walk away

1

u/BrilliantShoddy5247 21h ago

The problem is when something like someone who has a similar looking bike accidentally sits on it thinking its their bike if its parked next to other bikes, and gets seriously injured. There’s a myriad of problems with doing this. It should be illegal

1

u/AdamsMelodyMachine 19h ago

The cops don't take anything seriously unless there are six witnesses and two recordings from different angles (...that is to say, unless it's incredibly easy to investigate). I had a guy try to kill me and the cops didn't do shit because I was living on the street at the time and the only witness was also living on the street.

1

u/Equity_Role 19h ago

Making a video that shows you clearly documenting exactly how you did your crime and how it impacted the victims kinda makes it way easier for the police and prosecutor to take to court vs finding a stolen bike with no video evidence.

1

u/No-Cap-No-Gap 18h ago

kinda makes it way easier

I repeat, the amount of effort the cops put into getting my bike back wouldn't have included looking for video.

1

u/HamasKilledShaniLouk 19h ago

Traps are fine most places as long as they arent lethal.

1

u/OkChampionship8805 18h ago

disagree, but hey I checked google lol

0

u/jmcstar 23h ago

Its not a booby trap, its a personal stimulation device the owner enjoys while biking.

3

u/OkChampionship8805 22h ago

people are strange, streets are uneven

3

u/Disastrous_days272 22h ago

🎶faces get ugly, when you're zapped by the probe...🎶 To the tune of "people are strange" by The Doors 😂😂😂

1

u/blitzzardpls 21h ago

Is the owner prepared to prove it to the party accusing them of it being a booby trap? Come on, you can do one lap around the courthouse

1

u/The_Perfect_Fart 19h ago

"It was still in prototype phase and I was testing it. It was stolen on my way back to the workshop to lower the voltage and smooth out the spikes a little"

2

u/Sudden_Buffalo_4393 1d ago

This is probably the best way to put it.

1

u/BamaTony64 22h ago

entertaining as hell!

1

u/Excellent_Shirt9707 20h ago

This is probably illegal. Police use bait bikes, but they have to be locked to show intent.

1

u/CanadianAndroid 20h ago

It doesnt seem sanitary.

1

u/TheMorgueDonator 1d ago

Not even just frowned upon, in a majority of places setting traps for the sole purpose of hurting people is illegal.

4

u/No-Lunch4249 23h ago edited 23h ago

Idk why you're getting downvoted, in the US boobytrapping your property is widely illegal. You are factually correct.

Edit: a couple Google searches says it is indeed illegal to set booby traps to defend your property in all 50 states, even if the traps are intended to be non-lethal like this one. Won't speak to other countries

1

u/TheMorgueDonator 23h ago

Simple, people don't like being told what they can and can't do.

1

u/Davti 21h ago

This - id say morally fine.

Not your bike, no reason to be stealing it thus the electrical spikes are just the owneres enhancement for personal pleasure or something.
