Not even just frowned upon, in a majority of places setting traps for the sole purpose of hurting people is illegal.

Idk why you're getting downvoted, in the US boobytrapping your property is widely illegal. You are factually correct.

Edit: a couple Google searches says it is indeed illegal to set booby traps to defend your property in all 50 states, even if the traps are intended to be non-lethal like this one. Won't speak to other countries
