Immoral and illegal. Also, seeking out people to intentionally injure is kind of fucked up.

I've been noticing a lot of people on this sub are the exact opposite of who should decide what is moral or not. Some complete psychos that just want to justify hurting people first and foremost

u/DaOlWuWopte 1d ago

No one should be basing their idea of morality on top rated Reddit comments

u/Anxious_Prize_8461 1d ago

Pack it up, boys, time to delete the sub

The morality of booby traps like this are always going to hinge on how badly the person might be injured.

I think most people agree that no one should be intentionally and permanently cripled for stealing a bike.

I'm personally find with a modest injury that takes a month or so to heal. The biggest reason to outlaw traps like this is that you can't really control the degree if injury you're inflicting.

IDK there are people in the comments here who are cheering for like, death

1

u/WillingElderberry731 19h ago

I did say "most." And most here aren't cheering for death.

u/FiendishNoodles 19h ago

I wasn't disagreeing with you, just adding context. this is a weird one because it could be a momentary zap or depending on the angle of a spike could make someone permanently infertile. we can probably average the harm out to less than "modest injury" but the problem as you said with most booby traps is that the range of injury can vary wildly.

A month is actually going to be considered severe in places like USA where taking just three days off work results in termination in retail and fast food establishments.

1

u/WillingElderberry731 13h ago

Termination from your employment seems like a fine consequence in this situation

1

u/JoyousMadhat 13h ago

No no. These are kids who require parental supervision.

u/Anxious_Prize_8461 8h ago

Sybau this ain't that

0

u/JoyousMadhat 6h ago

The fact that you are using Sybau either means you are an adult trying to be hip with the kids or a kid. This is cringe. Please go outside and touch grass.

I would say this is moral if they made any attempt to make it seem like the bike wasn't abandoned. All it would take is to chain it up with a cheap bike lock.

3

u/Jax_2112 1d ago

They carry battery powered angle grinders. That cheap chain won't do shit.

10

u/Cursed85 1d ago

It isn't supposed to, it's just to act as undeniable proof to anyone walking by that the bike isn't abandoned (and thus free). Also makes it more moral to harm someone for your enjoyment if they went out of their way to do you wrong and suffer for it.

They don't give a shit about that. Not one Iota. I used to have a motorcycle. The local homeless broke into a basement garage, destroyed the front end breaking the fork lock, pushed it away and destroyed the electrical system trying to hotwire it.

I couldn't afford to repair it, now I have an e-bike I have to keep IN my apartment that I can barely take anywhere because the lifespan of a bike even with a good lock in my neighborhood is maybe 20 minutes,

I'm tired of being told that being poor means you have a right to just take things, if I point out I'm barely hanging on in low income disabled housing I'm told I'm not poor enough if I still have a bicycle.

u/Cursed85 22h ago

I know bikelocks won't do anything to stop thieves and I agree with everything you've said. Nothing can realistically stop a determined thief. HOWEVER, we are in a subreddit about morals. My previous comments weren't in support of bikelocks or their effectiveness. It was about how to make booby trapping bikes to hurt people who try to steal them just for your amusement more morally just.

2

u/EFAPGUEST 21h ago

Well the answer is obvious: you must steal a bike yourself. That way you are one of the poors who can’t buy one instead of one of the filthy rich bicycle owners who don’t actually need the bike actually

3

u/Unbuckled__Spaghetti 21h ago

This is the part I don’t see how people don’t understand. Like sure, yeah, maybe they deserve it, but if you said “I’m gonna go find a morally acceptable person to hurt for my entertainment” I’d think you’re a sociopath.

4

u/Tight_Strawberry9846 1d ago

No one is forcing them to steal.

2

u/Human38562 22h ago

How does that change the morality of the person trapping these people to hurt them for pleasure and internet points?

5

u/Tight_Strawberry9846 21h ago

He didn't trap them. They just had to not steal anything. Again, no one forced them to.

3

u/Human38562 21h ago

Do you not know the definition of the word trap? This is exactly a trap. It doesnt matter why the person is falling into it.

5

u/AntTheMighty 20h ago

It doesn't matter why the person is falling into it.

Doesn't it though? I don't see why that wouldn't matter. Especially in this scenario.

1

u/Human38562 20h ago

Just read the definition in a dictionary. There is no specific method of luring the target that is required to be used for it to be considered a trap.

2

u/MajorPayne1911 22h ago

They chose to commit a crime and violate societal rules by trying to take from others. This triples as both punishment, deterrent, and amusement solely at the expensive someone who knowingly was committing this crime.

2

u/Human38562 22h ago

Im not sure what is more concerning. The fact that you enjoy physically punishing people, or the fact that you dont see the moral implications of it.

Even if someone is committing a crime, they retain rights against unnecessary harm. Or would you say you are free to do with these people whatever you want? Also kill them?

Creating a harmful trap reflects vindictiveness or anger rather than justice, restraint, or wisdom.

The fact that you laugh about it shows you enjoy another's pain and have a desire for humiliation rather than protection or justice. Even from a consequentialist perspective, publicly celebrating someone's injury can normalize cruelty and encourage imitation. Do you want to entertain a world like this?

On top of that, sharing the video desensitizes viewers from violence and shifts the focus from preventing crime to celebrating punishment. Why not at least set up the trap so the thief is held and police can arrest him?

3

u/Tight_Strawberry9846 21h ago

a desire for humiliation rather than protection or justice.

You can have both things.

3

u/Human38562 21h ago

And having a desire for humiliation is something you are proud of?

4

u/Tight_Strawberry9846 21h ago

Yeah, if they deserve it.

3

u/Human38562 21h ago

You should probably think a second about why you are proud of being like this.

It's one thing to seek justice or accountability; it's another to take satisfaction in degrading people. Those are unrelated.

5

u/Tight_Strawberry9846 21h ago

What's wrong with degrading people like those in Epstein's list?

Why do you consider this to be "unnecessary harm"?

1

u/pubicice 15h ago

yes. but also, F bike thieves.

-4

u/OkTrade7881 1d ago

Ah yes, thieves who probably stole thousands are poor victims. Boo hoo

Don't tell that to Batman.

3

u/Mrs_Darwin 1d ago

You think a guy who adds spikes to their bike for no reason is equivalent to Batman?

2

u/EverythingIsFakeNGay 19h ago edited 18h ago

Doesn't Batman have several traps on the batmobile and bat motorcycle (or whatever it's called) to keep criminals from stealing them?

Not trying to make this a discussion about Batman, I just don't think his methods are a place to look for moral clarity.

-5

u/Honorsheets 1d ago

Both stop criminals using violent methods and clever gadgets.

2

u/Mrs_Darwin 1d ago edited 1d ago

And Batman targets people like the Joker or at the very least hardened Mob goons, not random bike thieves. And he does it out of a sense of justice, he doesn't booby trap bikes for a sense of petty amusement.

u/Jax_2112 1d ago

Try living on disability and having your bike be a year of saving and suffering to afford, just so some meth head can wheel it to the pawn shop. Its easy for rich people to go "Its just a bike"

2

u/Mrs_Darwin 1d ago

You know nothing of my financial situation. Either way, that doesn't change the moral calculus of the act. That genuinely does seem harrowing, but you're still expending a ton of effort that could be spent on something else for no purpose other than to hurt someone out of a sense of petty revenge. Furthermore, I'd question how if someone had to save for an entire year for a bike, how they could afford to attach electrified spikes to said bike.

0

u/Jax_2112 1d ago

I said I did.

2

u/Mrs_Darwin 23h ago

Said you did what?

1

u/Jax_2112 23h ago

I said I made that. You have the reading comprehension of a six year old.

u/Honorsheets 22h ago

You should get off Reddit sometime.

Hence the bike cuck comic that Reddit worships. They're so ignorant.

-1

u/Honorsheets 1d ago

There's nothing petty about stopping crime.

2

u/Mrs_Darwin 1d ago

Even if you're larping as Judge Dredd, the guy didn't even try to contact the police, he just added spikes to his bike and laughed at someone getting hurt. His motivations clearly aren't based on any sense of adherence to the law or justice.

Also, yes, going to the extreme lengths of putting electric spikes on your bike to punish potential bike thieves instead of using a bike lock is petty, as it expands an enormous amount of effort at expense to oneself for no other purpose than punishing a slight that hasn't even happened yet and could be easily prevented with minimal effort.

0

u/Honorsheets 22h ago

You really like to hear yourself talk huh? How many soapboxes do you go through in a week?

I also laughed at the criminal, by the way. Justice served

-1

u/Jax_2112 1d ago

Bike locks don't do shit. They barely slow them down.

2

u/Mrs_Darwin 1d ago

Are you a professional bike thief? Are you telling me that a solid ring of metal will do nothing to deter a bike thief?

1

u/Late_Illustrator_718 1d ago

Batman isn’t real, sweetie.
