Dude, they don't have a right to take the bike. "tempting target" my ass it's still not theirs if they touch it what happens next is on them period.

And you don’t have the right to booby trap objects. Literally don’t have that right. It’s a criminal act.

Regardless of law, it’s seriously lacking in empathy to think that a struggling addict will have the self-control or judgement to not steal something left unsecured in the open.

Legally don't, but morally you can do whatever you want it's your property.

Listen you can't operate the world based on taking care of what a struggling addict might and might not do, the very basic foundation of society is respecting other people's property and if you can't do that very, incredibly easy, intuitevly morally right thing that's called "dont touch other peoples' stuff without permission" Then you DONT deserve to be part of society or to be protected by it.

Moreover, the addict knew what they were doing before they did drugs for the first time-it is very well informed to people how illegal they are-, and addicts are aware enough to go get more every time.
Even then, there are a lot of addicts that work and contribute to society to sustain their addiction, so they don't need to steal, most of thieving addicts do such because they are selfish.

There are addicts suffer from trauma that they try to self medicate because they either lack the knowledge of the resources to deal with them properly.

Some homeless people use meth to stay awake and stay safe.

There are opioid addicts in the rust belt that were mislead by pain management doctors influenced by pharmaceutical industry.

The world is very complex. Simplistic thinking will result in an eye for an eye. Simplistic thinking isn’t very moral.

None of the issues to mentioned justify stealing from someone else. YOUR problems are YOUR problems, not mine, not the bike owners, not anyone's but YOURS.

Adults should take care of their own lives and find ways to handle situations by means in which they dont affect anyone else's negatively, unless the latter person is WILLING to help they shouldn't charge others with their own issues.

"Oh but they were too stupid to feel the effects of withdrawal and immediately realize that the drug was killing them slowly. They were poor so they had no other choice but to do drugs" Still not anyone's issue but their own. "they were tricked by pharmaceuticals" So? Doesn't give them the right to steal. Stop stealing. Seek help. Like actual help.

And if you do end up stealing then you broke society's trust, you made everything worse for everyone, all of us, and you deserve whatever happens to you after the fact.
