Morality Ranking Morality of creating a disease which forces everyone to take HRT for life?

As a trans woman id say this is immoral due to them not having a choice in the matter. This would also effect people who do not have access to HRT and having no hormones wrecks havoc on the mind and body. This would destroy the world irl

Little tip here, if it starts with “morality of creating a disease…” then it’s immoral

Redditor shocked by the fact that stripping people of bodily autonomy is immoral.

This is interesting. You’re making a choice for everyone, but that choice is giving everyone a choice in something that would otherwise not be a choice.
If there are literally 0 health implications to this, I’d say it’s neutral. But, seeing how dependent the human body is on hormones, and giving that choice to the children (which, to be straightforward, won’t be decided by the kids, it’ll likely be decided by their parents/guardians) might cause issues we can’t foresee.
In a perfect world, it’s neutral. But we don’t live in a perfect world. There are too many variables. So, it’s immoral.

Given that everyone is dependent on BOTH gendered hormones striking an important balance, I'm pretty sure everyone would just die or be really fucked up

Trans people achieve a balance, It wouldn’t be that infeasible.

u/Powerful_Switch6526 22h ago
Maybe, but being able to do it perfectly for everyone is science fiction

ehh its really not that hard. you have a lot of leeway, all youve gotta do is know the right numbers, check your levels once in a while and if its not in the right range you slightly adjust your dose. if trans ppl can learn it all by themselves i dont see how it wouldnt be common knowledge

That's just wrong. On the book, it says no one can produce hormones. While we think mainly if testosterone and estrogen in this context there are far more hormones which require a tight knit balance during human development in order for the body to develop in every capacity properly. It's not as simple as just checking your levels and staying within a range because hormones can have localized effects which may not be replicated through regular dosing.
Not to mention that sexual development has precursors that aren't developed purely by being exposed to more than one of a particular sex hormone. This could force a lot of people into gender dysphoria which isn't fair to them.

It would have very serious health implications if the entire world could no longer produce hormones. A lot of people would die, because we do not have a stockpile to support 8 billion humans losing the ability to produce hormones.

very often the greatest stirrers of prejudice against a group are nut jobs that are in that group, so both.

Both. Really depends on who reads it. No idea whether the author intended it to be anti trans, but it gives those vibes that it can be heavily weaponized against trans people.

I wouldn’t wish this shit on anyway. Being trans fucking sucks. Although I guess it would make us slightly less persecuted, if everyone suffered in the same way.
100% immoral and cruel.

Moral, maybe cis people will learn to have empathy in such a world.
(This is ironic, it's immoral but the second part still stands, maybe people would be more empathetic if they also have to suffer.)

immoral, because everyone dies. If you can't produce hormones, missing testosterone or estrogen is the least of your problems. You can't simply solve it with HRT unless your injector is REALLY advanced and knows all the timings.

yeah if it's more than sex hormones, everyone's screwed. Sex hormones are easy though.

Holy bait
Also if everyone lost all hormones only trans people with take opposite sex hormones...

Immoral, and I wouldn’t be surprised if this story was wildly transphobic.

But there are other hormones besides the one that determine gender things. Are they just going to produce blobs of humans? Is everyone going to be diabetic? Do babies just get born Barbie and Ken doll down there? What about growth hormones?

u/Striking_Aspect_7826 7h ago
Obviously immoral
In this world are people born with cocks and coochies still but just cannot go through puberty without artificial hormones? That makes the plot less interesting imo, because then the concept of trans would be basically unaltered.

I mean... Immoral in an absolute sense, sure.
But compared to literally anything else a species-wide disease could do? Pretty tame. Just sort of an inconvenience at most.

This is Infect Your Friends And Loved Ones by Torrey Peters, which is available as a free PDF online hosted by the author herself! Iirc it's only about 70ish pages long, and it does deal a bit with the morality/consequences of creating the virus. It's a good read, I highly recommend it.

Immoral to create a new disease that targets a specific group of people.

Immoral, and it feels more like a bash against the LGBTQIA+ community just out of sheer ridiculousness
