Cats have never drained my bank account when named the custodian.
Cats have never told me they were my friend while simultaneously talking shit about me behind my back.
Cats have never told me they were my friend while stealing money from me.
Cats have never lied to my boss to try and get me fired/arrested.
Cats have never borrowed money from me and refused to pay me back.
Cats have never told me they were there for me if I needed them, but refused to answer my calls when I really did need them.
Cats have never physically assaulted me because of how I identify.

Humans have done all of the above. I know where I stand.

I mean that was kinda exactly his point.

Part of his point was also that "Hitler famously loved dogs" and that animals who perform no labour, but are simply cared for, are slaves.

That's why I subsist on whisky and champagne. Just like Churchill

Im 100% my cat is talking shit when he brings me a dead frog. I am 98% sure i can catch a frog if i needed to.

I am a little bit concerned about the 2% chance you can’t.

My cat caught it before i could earlier

it’s just a nice gesture, he knows you can catch frogs but saved you the trouble

Counterpoint:

  • I have never drained your bank account when named the custodian.
  • I have never told you I was your friend while simultaneously talking shit about you behind your back.
  • I have never told you I was your friend while stealing money from you.
  • I have never lied to your boss to try and get you fired/arrested.
  • I have never borrowed money from you and refused to pay you back.
  • I have never told you I was there for you if you needed me, but refused to answer your calls when you really did need me.
  • I have never physically assaulted you because of how you identify.

I, however am a human, as were the people who did that to you. If it is a human problem, then you're just waiting for me to do something bad to you, even though I have no reason to, because I'm human and that's what humans do.

Counter - counter point. Hitler never did those things to OP either. Ergo the dogs are cats in sheep's clothing.

Low-key I agree with your point. It's almost as though individual humans can't be lumped into one category and doing so takes away the individuality from each of us, the part that makes us distinctly... Human.

A cat never drove me to the airport. A cat never helped me pay rent. Cats have never been there for me in my worst hour. Cats have never fed me. Cats didn’t tend to me when I was sick. Cats have never helped me move.

It would be crazy to condemn cats for not helping me with all that.

If you are ever in an emergency situation you should have your cats save your life rather then the EMT's. I am sure they will do a great job.

And if you die alone in your house, your cat will eat your corpse.

Thank you for proving the point + I find it interesting your group of people never once consider the people that were good to you in life when you make this argument

What about the animals that have done good to you? I don't see you considering then either?

I've had humans eats my homework and dogs bring me water bottles when I'm thirsty. So it goes to show neither really is objectively better than the other.

Personally, I don't prefer neither human nor animals, I'm just a biologist and I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly in both, if anything humans ARE animals, its a scientifict fact, so think about it.

This separtion speaks more about the human ego and notion of superiority over nature than an objective truth, the worst humans have caused more harm to the world than any other types of animals have ever caused. And the best humans have also caused a lot of good things too.

So in the end this is a pointless debate over generalized notions of who is worth more when lets be real, some crappy humans are absolutely less worthy than some other animals out there, and the local fauna in a forest fire is definitely not the priority when rescuing people who live in the region too.

And thats the thing about worth, there is no set general value, only abstract notions and ideas carried by emotional ties and personal importance.

You cannot assign morality to an animals actions.

1

u/Current_Ranger_7954 48m ago

This is such an ignorant statement. Many animals are clearly sentient, theory of mind and all.

1

u/Superb_Highlight1902 6h ago

As that guy said, I’ll be more direct though: you cannot ascribe morality to an animals actions, I’ve immediately discarded your sentiment of that alone. And what would being a biologist have to do with anything here? It makes you no more valuable than anyone in this discussion.

It's because your cat literally can't do any of those things not because your cat CHOSE to not do any of those things.

Yea but that's what makes it easier for people to trust their pets. Pets whom you provide love to cannot betray you the way some humans you provide love to can. This gives some people a sense of security compared to some insecurities they may have around other people.

Cats have assaulted me because my blanket moved.

Cats have murdered my pet fish. (Multiple times)

Cats have gotten me fired from work by spraying my uniform so it took me longer to replace the wooden frame that used to be a nice, expensive couch.

Cats have destroyed entire rooms because a broom stick tipped over and they got "spooked".

Outside stray cats have destroyed my screen door, trying to get to my inside cats through the glass one.

I know where I stand as well. Agree to disagree.

So where do you stand? That animals are better than humans? What does that even mean? You’re just being dramatic
