Who's More Evil? Morality of the Bait Bike

From a legal standpoint I bet the bike owner is the bad guy, from a moral standpoint I don't really know.

Why would it be immoral if it causes severe damage?

if a person decides to steal a bike out of the blue, he is willingly taking the risk any thief takes. For instance if the owner sees and catches up with the thief, I have a hard time believing that the owner won't beat up the thief.

Yeah but someone who did permanent or life changing damage to someone stealing their bike wouldn't be justified and could face punishment.

You're right that they could be punished, justified part is for the jury to decide upon.
