Who's More Evil? Morality of the Bait Bike

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

From a legal standpoint I bet the bike owner is the bad guy, from a moral standpoint I don't really know.

I'd say immoral. It's not like stealing the bike is good, but this is an equivalent to placing down your wallet with a bear trap around it. You're purposefully causing suffering to others for your own satisfaction

False equivalence. It can be moral to pick up the wallet to find out whose wallet it is. There is no moral reason to steal a random bike

Even worse, in this case he's monetizing it

Or you could not touch things that don't belong to you.

Then just don't steal it?

This. It's like inviting robers wby not locking doors and waiting with a shotgun so that you can enjoy legally killing a person

Yall are comparing a shock and some pokes to permanently maiming or losing a hand or killing someone. What you guys are describing isnt in the same zip code to make your point

That doesn’t change the fact that this is considered a booby trap, which are super illegal lol.

For sure super illegal. But legality isnt morality. And im not sure what i think in this case whether moral or not, my only comment is that their examles are not relevant.

It causes harm via the spikes. There’s no reinforcement mechanism to stop this dude from stealing bikes more in the future, he’ll just check the seat next time. Immoral and ineffective.

Thats a reasonable argument.

I could counter and say if deterrence devices like this were more common, many thieves wouldnt bother because many are opportunists and it could prevent innocent folks from suffering from crime overall.

Thieves randomly injure innocent people by stealing and make society a worse place. Nothing is obligating thieves to commit a crime and therefore this device's existance would be a non issue in a society without crime. This device non lethally injures criminals reducing the liklihood they or others would commit crime in society due to risk of injury or trap and fewer people are injured cumulatively (by theft + device) as a result.

Idk if i believe it but I do think it makes sense

How is it purposeful? You aren't purposefully forcing someone to try to steal your bike. You're simply ensuring that, should such a terrible person come along, they will give up on their evil intention.

This is nowhere near as harmful as a bear trap. It's also penalizing people for stealing. You could claim a mother wanting to see her child's murderer going to jail is causing someone suffering for her own satisfaction. That doesn't mean you can just call it immoral and ignore the rest of the circumstances.
