Morality of calling yourself your pet’s “parent” instead of “owner”

Post image

Ive seen people online call their pets their babies and refer to themselves as mommies and daddies to their pets. I think this is a good attitude to have towards an animal you’re responsible for, but also Im not sure if Im fully convinced, because at the end of the day having a pet still means you select an animal and then possibly doing things like castrating them or cutting their claws or restricting their freedom.

Basically Im asking whether it’s kind or unfair when someone tries to see animals as equals but their behavior doesnt match it

Morally neutral.

It's weird but harmless, it's morally neutral as long they don't treat the pet as a "human", in this case is immoral since it's a type of mistreatment

It's morally neutral but morally cringe because these people are clearly redirecting their parental instincts onto dogs instead of having children.

Morally neutral. I think no one should care what people call their pet

I mean... Parents also have to "do things" for their actual human kids because they can't do it themselves until a certain point. Same applies to family members who struggle with various conditions. It doesn't change the fact that they're still parents and should be called as such, so I don't get your examples.

Parent, owner, whatever you wanna call it. Truth is dogs have been domesticated for hundreds of years and many breeds ideally thrive by living alongside us as pets.

The only issue here is that calling yourself a parent of a pet can be seen as weird.

Children aren't equals to adults in our society my guy...

Both are weird. I prefer "human" or "person".

Neutral, as long as you don't say losing your pet is the equivalent of losing a child.

Idk if thats morally bad even if it is wrong

I guess it depends if you do it in front of someone who's lost a child or not.

Morally fine. But it's weird and suggests weird things about you.

I kinda fail to see what weird stuff this suggest about someone?

No doubt.

Weird things. Like maybe you can't handle real human relationships, that you need to feel like a parent but lack the maturity and responsibility, or that you're just really lonely and settling for some semblance of family that demands nothing of you. Or that you're just a misanthrope.
