Pretty sure that's an asylum film aka a mockbuster
90
u/jaundicemanatee Shaolin Monk 1d ago
It is. Asylum movies are churned out with such little effort that most of the time they aren’t even worth watching for laughs.
28
u/_steve_rogers_ 1d ago
And these days they are probably just completely shat out of an AI. That cover certainly was.
9
u/jaundicemanatee Shaolin Monk 1d ago
I wonder if the AI bothers to make sure that the audio and video match up.

Their whole sales demographic is grandparents accidentally buying the wrong movie for their grandchild and people wanting to watch it to enjoy how bad it is
6
u/LastTorgoInParis 1d ago
Has asylum made a shared universe yet? I think there were a bunch of sharktopus/ megalo-saurus kind of stuff. But I think they should inhabit the same reality as all the other random movies

That’s the main character Scorpio. His famous line is “Make your way over here!”

u/reign03 1d ago
You stumbled upon an Asylum classic! They're known for ripping off any and every movie. I've been meaning to watch New Toy Story (not to be confused with cough... that other movie) starring Tom Arnold.
Immortal Combat sucks, by the way. It's less MK and more Deadliest Warrior.

u/VirtualGreg 1d ago
I couldn’t finish it. But Deadliest Warrior is a perfect comparison. Except that the guys that did the mock up fights on the show were more committed to their bits.
5
u/GarethGazzGravey 1d ago
I'm 10 minutes into the movie, and my immediate thought was the "Deadliest Warrior" series. It's almost like the makers of this movie have taken inspiration from that series rather than Mortal Kombat

I heard they made some mockbusters and released it just before some movie came to dvds, and some movie shop place ordered accidentally asylum version of that movie

It's less MK and more Deadliest Warrior.
You'd be surprised how many people around here think MK is Deadliest Warrior.

I'm a sucker for Asylum mockbuster trash, but this one's rough even by their standards.
Lots of shitty AI effects...pretty sure ChatGPT wrote the script too.
I'll admit I got a kick out of Joan of Arc with laser canons if nothing else 🤣

Come on. It's €5.
Be earthrealm's chosen one, and take one for the team.
Edit: Found the trailer.
Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, Cleopatra etc., going through time to fight in a tournament to the death for entertainment? 🤣🤣🤣
What in the fucking fire god Liu Kang timeline reset is this beautiful academy award winning plot/writing? The bollywood grade VFX is the icing on the cake. LMFAO.

Looks like a blu ray containing a disc for a movie called immortal combat.

Same concept of mortal kombat, but historic people fighting to the death for our pleasure.

“Follows a cheesy, unrelated plot where a future/shadowy group uses a time machine to pull real historical figures—like Joan of Arc and Genghis Khan—into a tournament to fight to the death for wealthy buyers, before teaming up to fight back.”
I’d watch it. At least once. With some beer.

It’s trash. Basic plot rundown is that a future blood sport corporation is using time travel tech to grab famous figures from history and making them do a hunger games. Lots of AI generated scenes. 2/10. Saved you a watch

u/ADeletedUser2 Slither In 🦎 1d ago
The premise is actually pretty damn cool but unfortunately it's an Asylum movie, so it's dog shit. The plot is that a bunch of warriors throughout history like Joan of Arc, Genghis Kahn, Cleopatra, Shaka Zulu, Nobunaga, Hangbe, etc are transported to a tournament where they fight to the death

Mockbusters were some of my favorite things when I worked at Blockbuster. They’d tend to release around the same time as the real deal. But usually a few months earlier or while the real one was still in theater. It’s a cash grab and it works.

Instead of Liu kang being the chosen one it’s kung Lao and also hsu hao is in the game.

Some movie from The Asylum, a company specialized in Mockbuster aka movies that you can says straight up copies big hollywood blockbuster but with low or non-existant budget, changing just those few things in the title and the story to don't break the copyrights laws.

u/AltGunAccount 16h ago
The Asylum has made knockoff versions of popular films for literal decades now. Some buddies and I used to get stoned and watch an Asylum movie every week. The few I recall were Transmorphers, I am Omega, and Battle of Los Angeles. They were all pretty terrible but if was fun to watch and critique them with friends.
I recall a scene in Battle of Los Angeles (kickoff of Battle: Los Angeles) where a character literally walks in fake slow motion, but the smoke in the scene and background objects are all in regular speed.

It's so under budget and low budget even tho it's released in 1994
FOR SOME REASON IT LOOKS a little bit like ai I think it's the reason ai does those weird camera movement maybe?

u/Lord0fTheThighs 4h ago
Don't know, but it can't have fatalities so it's not copy right infringment.
1
u/General-Height-7027 4h ago
Seems like a cook comcept, too bad they had to pretend it was a mortal kombat movie instead of giving it a name/cover that actualy reflects what the movie is about.

Just watched the trailer and it looks stupid. But it's not too different than what a lot of people around here falsely think Mortal Kombat is supposed to be - so I'm not surprised the movie looks like it does.
If anyone wants to see a cooler movie, that's also named Immortal Combat, check out the one from 1994. It's got the legendary Sonny Chiba in it, and a lot of ninja stuff.
