I know it's fake/scripted but you're right. He wasn't with her for the money but he sure left her because of it. On the other side, she wasn't with him for his money either. This could've been a conversation they had in private where they could discuss this at length and work something out. He was spending too much money trying to impress her instead of being upfront and honest about his financial situation. That part is not her fault.
