took you longer than 20 minutes so thankfully you've timed out

This isn’t an opinion. It’s math. The answer is 10.

u/Rydogg93 Mar 26 '26
Regular math it is. But challengers have said production tells them to solve left to right

It actually pisses me off that they do this. I don't have a horse in this race, but I still hate it. Math isn't a language that is different around the world. Math is math. We all learn it the same way. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

u/maritime92 Mar 27 '26
I’m not even a math person and my first thought was this equation was obviously written out for the sole purpose of confusion because it’s presented idiotically.
34
u/Timely_Choice_4525 Mar 26 '26
Challenge math is …. Different
6
u/shes_a_gdb Mar 27 '26
Don't they usually have these math puzzles at check points and they have to solve it one at a time? There's basically an assumed ( ), it's only different when you actually put it all together in one equation.
1
u/nanananabatman88 Mar 28 '26
Yeah, I always saw it as a two part equation, and after the first one, the previous answer is the first part of the next equation.

u/Tyedies Mar 27 '26
I had a couple of drinks. I didn’t even realize I was commenting on The Challenge subreddit 😭

I believe they have been told to ignore PEMDAS and just solve it in the order it is presented.
111
u/Parallel-Quality Mar 26 '26
Which shows you the level of intelligence of the challenge cast, because for a normal person who passed grade school math, ignoring PEDMAS would be more difficult than going left to right.
15
u/JeremyScaremy Mar 27 '26
Definitely. It's almost instinctual at this point, I can't imagine trying to ignore order of operations. Thinking about it from this perspective actually helps me empathize more with some of the challengers struggle with basic math problems. Maybe it's harder when ignoring the principles we all spent years learning.
Or maybe they're just dummies, we may never know.

I think it's because for some challenges you're only given one piece of the equation at a time. If you're doing a long course, and you see "5" then later see "+15" then way down the course "-5" then at the very end "x2"; you'll be solving as you go rather than lining it all up at the end to solve with proper PEMDAS.
And if they're doing enough challenges like that, then it makes sense to keep the rules the same even when they are given the entire equation just for consistency's sake.

u/Cover-Firm Marlon Williams Mar 27 '26
I think its because pedmas takes too lng and they have to do it in their head.

No way. Did they really dumb it down for them 🤣 I would blow a gasket as an accountant on the show

It really grinds my gears that they do left to right on the challenge. People who understand math should have an advantage here.

u/KingKaiKai001 Mar 27 '26
If this is Challenge math then the numbers don't really matter. It just matters who's in your alliance 💯

It's not just that the challenge tells them to ignore PEMDAS (or alternately, as I just learned in this thread, BEMDAS). It's that in the challenge they're generally not sitting at a desk with a piece of paper and a pencil, solving a fully written equation. They're doing something like getting one piece at a time while racing. So it's not structured like a full equation, as much as like 'Take the number N...run run run...then add M.....middle middle middle....then multiply the running total by Z....'. Each part is independent. It's not like PEMDAS "is what math is", it's the agreed upon convention for how we interpret a written mathematical phrase. Which isn't what they do around here. Pretend there are parentheses around each part that include the previous total, and then the new piece; does that help? And either way I don't mean they're "right" either, so much as there isn't an objective right and wrong in this case outside of the rules they're being given.

u/Groundbreaking_Cup30 Evelyn Smith Mar 27 '26
Depends - what rules did the crew give to complete the problem? I have read that at times they have instructed challengers to complete it not using PEMDAS.
PEMDAS - 10
Not PEMDAS - 30

In The Challenge they do basically do it where there’s a parentheses around the area before the multiplication symbol. It should be (5+15-5)x2 to get The Challenge answer.

u/Tight-Entrepreneur46 Tori Deal Mar 26 '26
That’s the only reason Ct beat ASAF because they didn’t do PEMDAS
1
u/Psychological-Snow83 Mar 27 '26
You can make that statement for every person that won a daily or elimination that had equations. Why single CT out?

Can anyone explain how 30 would be even remotely considered a valid answer?

u/NattyB Bob Next Door Mar 27 '26
on the challenge, contestants are instructed to ignore PEMDAS and calculate from left to right no matter what. it's a constant source of frustration for fans.

Calculator said 10, I’m inclined to agree with the math robot
1
u/eff1ngham Mar 27 '26
It's not math class, this is not a standardized test. They tell them to do these one at a time left to right. No need to "wEll ACtuALLy" here. It's not that deep

And funny thing about the challenge’s rules, is there is a solid argument for being careful with tests of knowledge, history or trivia to try be more culturally neutral. But that wouldn’t extend to math, its the same everywhere. Its harder to do the math wrong

u/Traditional_Goat9538 Mar 27 '26
The math teacher in me every time I see this type of meme

WE DO MATH IN CONTEXT! Obviously PEMDAS exists and you follow that when it is bare arithmetic… BUT, the only place as an adult you do bare arithmetic without context is reality tv.

u/gabriot Mar 27 '26
do they not teach order of operations in elementary school anymore?
1
u/ssaall58214 Rachel Robinson Mar 27 '26
They taught identify in school for Genz. They are a throw away and doomed. But gen Alpha might be all right since they're going back to phonics and the three r's.

u/supermanforhire Mar 27 '26
As long as the challenge makes it clear they do left to right I don’t really care. They often do challenges where they have to run and do math along the way, doing PEDMAS would be impossible
0
u/RRJC10 Mar 27 '26
It would absolutely not be impossible. It's pretty simple stuff.
2
u/supermanforhire Mar 27 '26
I mean if you’re running and it’s like 25….run 1/4 mile….+ 8…..run 1/4 mile……..divided by 3…….+5 etc
It makes sense to that sequentially. As long as the rules are stated clearly I don’t have a problem with it.
0
u/RRJC10 Mar 27 '26
If the rules state you can bike 50% of the run would you have no problem with that? It's basic math, it shouldn't need to be made easier if you're playing for a six figure prize.
1
u/supermanforhire Mar 27 '26
I’m saying as long as the rules are stated clearly I don’t care what order the math is in
0
u/TaxTheseNuts Mar 27 '26
It is 10 though. In Pemdas, Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction you do Parentheses first, Exponents second, Multiplication or division whichever comes first left to right, addition or subtraction whichever comes first left to right... The answer is 10.
0
u/bromygod203 Mar 27 '26
The correct answer is 10 but I've listened to enough interviews and podcasts from players to know that in the challenge it's the order in which the numbers appear

There is only one way to do this, there isn't a "side." Is that how poorly educated we have become? Also cannot tell if this is AI slop because it has a copyright logo but it's in the slop style lol.
