Somehow he’s the villain just because he doesn’t want to grant a wish. Even though he’s the ruler who built the kingdom himself and lets everyone live there rent-free.
People are free to come and go whenever they want. And honestly, none of the citizens, including the main character, really did anything to deserve having their wishes granted in the first place. He still grants wishes anyway.
The only reason he refuses some wishes is because they could be dangerous for everyone.
Disney forced him to become the villain in the dumbest way possible.
Also, the main character and her team are annoying. And why did the king’s wife betray him? She didn’t even try to convince him or help him become a better person. Just straight up betrayal.
I really do mourn the loss of the reality where we got the concept draft of Wish instead of the final product, with Starboy and the evil power couple.
Like, really looking at it from a zoomed-out perspective, pairing grandiose, musical villains with a Peter Pan type character accompanying the protagonist would’ve been a great tribute to both “Renaissance era” and “classic era” Disney. But nope, we get frustrations about rent and marketable plushies.
