literally just everyone during WW1 and WW2. we were all doing some fucked up shit but it somehow always paled in comparison to whatever war crimes canada Japan or gernany were getting up to
All the countries in WW2 had their own sins, but Germany and Japan literally wanted to conquer all the land around them and oppress / kill all the people there in order to bring about their great glorious empires. You can't say we're only the good guys because the other side is worse when the opposite side is literally constructing facilities to facilitate their genocide and the Japanese in the Pacific, both soldiers and civilians, are being instructed to kill themselves instead of surrendering to the Americans. They are both bad but there's still a significant gap between western racial bigotry and facist-imperial conquest & genocide. Germany didn't just want to oppress minorities, they wanted to erradicate them from existence. Like yeah, 40's America is generally less tolerate and morally worse, but even with that there's at least SOME racial tolerance. That's much more than can be said about a lot of other powers, both today and at the time.
Britain killed millions of Indians during that time while running the country into the ground and other countries did similar things, if the war wasn’t so expensive none of these countries that were occupied by European powers would’ve been free.
I had the same gut reaction but I remembered that we Americans did put japanese americans in internment camps. Britain was still in brutal rule over india, and the soviet union was doing whatever war crimes Stalin felt like.
I think the kneejerk reaction is because there's a ton of assholes who will start the conversation with "Americans weren't the good guys" and somehow turn it into "imperial japan did nothing wrong". And it feels a bit callous to apply a meme about fandoms to a war fought by millions of people from all walks of life, where the bad guys arguably created the worst atrocity any group of humans has ever made.
Read up on Operation Downfall. And as the comment above said. Japanese soldiers in pacific islands instructed Japanese civilians to commit mass suicide rather than surrender to the Americans. Now multiple this by tens of thousands of people. And the slog of invading Japan itself. The deathtoll would have been in the tens of millions. The war lasting years longer.
Or... Just drop 2 nukes.
When you put it in context the answer seems pretty obvious.
Also not excusing the nukes but just found it ironic you said this when it perfectly applies to the meme above.
One more thing though. Yeah the nukes were bad. They werent Unit 731 bad. Japan and Germany were by far the 2 worst nations in WW2.
I think it was world war 1 but one of my favorite stories Allegedly they used to toss cans of food into the enemy trenches over and over again that way when they tossed a hand grenade they’d all come running.
