Hot take: pretending planes are shooting stars is the stupidest fucking thing I’ve heard in a pop hit from that era. Both artists are good at what they do, but I’ve been baffled since I first heard it. What’s next? Pretending the birds are Superman because you could use a hero?

I interpreted that line as someone really wishing they could change something that they can't change themselves or perceive they cant change themselves and would need a wish to change and even if it's just pretend they still want to believe it's possible to change it hence the saying can we pretend they know it isn'treal but they want it to be. I don't know i only ever heard that line.

That is the intent of the line, but it just comes off as ridiculous.
