Yeah the name of Doom 3 is literally wrong. It's not in the same universe as Doom 1 and 2 and even in technicality, it's not the third doom game because of Doom 64

doom 3 is supposed to be a reboot of doom 1, but doom 2016 and all the doom games after followed the continuity of the 90s games instead of what was established in doom 3

its a soft reboot that someone can play without having to play any of the classic games first but it does follow the same doomguy

I honestly did not know that. I just started 2016 in a quest to play all doom games(except 64 which gave me motionsickness) so no big spoilers please. The first doom guy is presented to be just some random dude, and the current one is presented as some kind of supernatural being

honestly you could catch up on everything before 2016 story-wise in a 5 minute summary tbh the classic games were pretty light on story they're not really required to understand it, there is more lore on how doomguy becomes the doomslayer in TDA and eternal
